Wow. I had this when i was 9. Way back 1999. My mom bought this when she was in Japan. I cannot remember what happened to this console. Before i have my PS1 i have this.
I wish I had a friend that loves these games as much as Mark does. Thanks Mark! You fill a void in my life nobody else does. I actually would love to play the coop ones with you. All my friends won't cuz they say they're "obsolete". Such a shame. Huge Genesis fanboy here btw! I'm 19 if that makes any difference. My mom had me play her Genesis before memories can describe, so it's actually her fault I'm a gamer XD I look forward to leaving Earth to board the intergalactic space arcade one day!
Too bad he’s gone now. Atleast we have these wonderful episodes! Thanx Mark and I hope you come back someday! I will watch every video game review you do, I promise!
This was one of the first import games I picked up for my Turbo when I got a converter at one of my local game stores (they even gave me a great discount since I'm one of about 3 or 4 people in the city that has a Turbo.
Aaah, great blast from the past Mark. It was the first game I owned on my PC Engine GT which I still own, both working very well, although older GT's suffered from quiet sound. I have wasted so many hours on this game whilst on holiday it is unbelievable. The handheld console was way ahead of the Gameboy technically (although I love my old Gameboy) but gobbled the batteries like anything. A fantastic Schmup!!
Great game, and good to see more PC Engine on CGR. Those 'homing discs of TRON' are a lot easier to dodge if you change the ship speed by pressing SELECT.
without getting drawn into a huge tech discussion, The point i was trying to make is that its foot is firmly in the 16 bit camp, it has the same sprite, colour and sound capabilities as the megadrive with a processor of pretty similar power, im a huge turbo/pc engine fan, if your in the forums you may of seen my turbo grafx arcade machine that i built? Anyways it astounds me that there are so many responses on her saying........What 8 bit??
Lets compare the PCE and Dreamcast to the most powerful console of the previous generation: the Master System can put 32 colours on-screen, the PCE can put 482 colours on-screen the N64 can render 180,000 polygons per second, the Dreamcast can render 5 million polygons per second the biggest sprite size the Master System can do is 8x16, the PCE can do 32x64 sprites the N64 has 1 MB of VRAM, the Dreamcast has 8 MBs of VRAM
Well even though there is no north American physical copy version to play this game, I consider myself a fan of shoot'em ups, so I'll be more than happy to play and add this game to the virtual console.
Totally dude, I couldn't imagine playing Crysis 3 and Super Meat Boy without my 560 horse power turbo charged computer. BEST MONEY I EVER SPENT! Love that sweet, sweet soothing purr.
Glad you're talking about the console, has tons of great shooter even on cd format, action platformers with a shooter feel and the best Castlevania in my opinion.
It has more on-screen colours than both the Genesis and SNES. If you compare it to other 8-bit systems like the NES and Master System, you can see the PC Engine was defiantly not a competitor to them. It is a hybrid with 8/16-bit architecture, kinda like the Dreamcast with its 32/64-bit CPU and 128-bit GPU.
Oh! Review the championship edition of street fighter 2 with the pc engine 6 button controller. Not bad for an 8 bit system. The scale of the sprites was on par with that of the arcade version. The color was slightly lacking but the detail was there.
Thanks for the input, but what i dont understand is how can u or tg16 say its not 16 bit when clearly it says turbo grafix 16 (16) think about that. They were clearly trying to say they were 16 bit, especially when u think about the time they came out in the usa was 1989 the start of the 16 bit era, thanks to sega genesis.
i want one..just one of everything... you should get the CD rom for that bad boy.i'd love to see you review it plus sone of the games that were specifically made for it..i regret forever the day that i didnt buy a P.C engine with games for £80 a few years back when gamestation still used to stock cool stuff
It has more on-screen colour than the Mega Drive, but can't quite throw as many large sprites around. Great system, but still 8-bit :P Would like to see your custom arcade machine - which forum is it on?
Final Soldier is the best entry for beginners. Soldier Blade is much harder but easily much better. That said, all three of the PCE Soldier games are worth playing. (Still waiting for that Soldier Blade review.)
This is way better than Soldier Blade.... Soldier blade has an astonishing first wave, but after that it becomes crap. This is great throughout with the best music of the series. I also like the option to select weapon behaviour.
...Oh, yeah, and super CD arcade card games like Fatal Fury 2 and Strider! Strider had great music. Also Forgotten worlds for the PC Engine Super CD! Also, more great music!
Of course they do, as everything goes through the CPU at some point then the 8-bit CPU is the bottleneck. 16-bit CPUs were probably too expensive in 1987.
I'd still class it as 16-bit overall (hell it was advertised as so being the 1st console with such 'bits'). By that logic SNES should be 8-bit too. Not like bit's ever mattered anyways.
It is said that, once it has reviewed every single object in the universe, the Intergalactic Space Arcade will land on the barren remains of Earth and restart humanity, but better. Let's all hope.
This is the best of the series, and one of the top 5 games on the PC Engine, others being Bomberman 94, Neutopia II, Galaga 88 and Jackie Chan. Soldier Blade is nowhere as good, especially considering the 5 times bigger team who made it. This has asthonishing music throughout, Soldier Blade only has two nice tracks, this has great weapon behaviour setup, Soldier Blade has totally annoying powerup pick-ups, This has better styling of land/water stages, on Soldier Blade it looks like 5 different designers made parts and all was stitched together in a big style clash.
We miss you Marc. You are a legend never forget that Marc!
So freaking true! I wish he would come back. I’m so tired of all the other stupid video game reviewers. They aren’t this good and never will be!
@@Adamchevy He's back now.
man this and Axelay are tied for my favourite Shoot-em up of all time!
Final Soldier is my favorite in the series, I even prefer it to Soldier Blade.
Playing old games with disco-ball lights surrounding you definitely looks awesome.
Wow. I had this when i was 9. Way back 1999. My mom bought this when she was in Japan. I cannot remember what happened to this console. Before i have my PS1 i have this.
Even after all these years...
I STILL dance to CGR's intro music.
Final Soldier was my number 1 favorite shoot em'ups of all-time on PC Engine
I wish I had a friend that loves these games as much as Mark does. Thanks Mark! You fill a void in my life nobody else does. I actually would love to play the coop ones with you. I would love to see Mark review Image Fight for the PC Engine
Last day I wondered how possible CGR could be more epic. Now I know the answer: Starting review epic PC-Engine games!! How awesome!
A fantastic Schmup!!
best review of the internet ! funny and pure classic old school´s !
Great game, and good to see more PC Engine on CGR.
Those 'homing discs of TRON' are a lot easier to dodge if you change the ship speed by pressing SELECT.
True, but the point I was trying to make (which you no doubt caught) is that bits of the processor don't really matter.
Great comparison, both the PCE and Dreamcast were inbetween generations, but more towards the next than last gen.
I absolutely love the way your editing your recent videos!! :)
Mark is suprisingly good at these kinds of games. Man I need too buy me some more 2d schmups
This is the one video that will be remembered ten years from now when a snarky, new journalist speaks of the distant relic known as youtube.
I have this game back in the day. It was a blast to play :D
Thanks for reviewing another PCE/TG game here! Hopefully you can find Soldier Blade too.
Just got this game today and I love it!
without getting drawn into a huge tech discussion, The point i was trying to make is that its foot is firmly in the 16 bit camp, it has the same sprite, colour and sound capabilities as the megadrive with a processor of pretty similar power, im a huge turbo/pc engine fan, if your in the forums you may of seen my turbo grafx arcade machine that i built? CGR continues to deliver!
Mark how come the game played on the tv looks better and its faster than the recorded one ?
Lets compare the PCE and Dreamcast to the most powerful console of the previous generation:
the Master System can put 32 colours on-screen, the PCE can put 482 colours on-screen
the N64 can render 180,000 polygons per second, the Dreamcast can render 5 million polygons per second

the N64 has 1 MB of VRAM, the Dreamcast has 8 MBs of VRAM
Do you have a turbo grafx super CD system, or turbo duo? You would probably like Gate of Thunder.
Well even though there is no north American physical copy version to play this game, I consider myself a fan of shoot'em ups, so I'll be more than happy to play and add this game to the virtual console.
Thank you Kyle for hopefully starting a new dawn of pc engine reviews, shame cgr was too cheap to buy one after all this time
Totally dude, I couldn't imagine playing Crysis 3 and Super Meat Boy without my 560 horse power turbo charged computer.
BEST MONEY I EVER SPENT!
Love that sweet, sweet soothing purr.
Glad you're talking about the console, has tons of great shooter even on cd format, action platformers with a shooter feel and the best Castlevania in my opinion.
Could you do a tour of your game room some time? It looks pretty awesome.
Oh hell yeah, more Star Soldier is always a good thing.
We need more pc engine! Was so rare in europe, never got to see one
soldier blade is the baddest of all, its about time this show got it turbo/engine on
Holy shit they finally review some pc engine games after two years of asking !
My question would be why the ship is shooting bubbles to begin with.
If ever in my life I somehow by chance own a spaceship, I vow to equip it with bubble lasers and flamethrowers in CGR's honor.
PC Engine is still cool. Had the potential to take over the video game world back in the day but it was'nt to be. This is a great looking shooter.
Bits aren't just marketing talk, they do have an impact on performance , but they're only one of several contributing factors.
It's about mo-fucken time cgr gets a pc engine!!! Final soldier is a fantastic game to kick off cgr's future with the awesome pc engine.
Mark, you need to review Recca. It's a rare famicom shmup that have been rereleased for the 3DS.
Oh! Review the championship edition of street fighter 2 with the pc engine 6 button controller. Not bad for an 8 bit system. The scale of the sprites was on par with that of the arcade version. The color was slightly lacking but the detail was there.
you used exacerbate...so cool!
I love how you love playing old games :-D
Reminds me a lot of galaxy warrior on the sega mastersystem! Could you review that game?! And Kenseiden!
No, they're definitely bubbles - check the setup screen in the video.
Probably the most epic ending of any of the episodes he's ever done.
One of my favourite shooters!
Mark please review Summer Carnival '92 RECCA that is on 3DS eShop
Yes, it has an 8-bit processor. And the Mattel Intellivision has a 16-bit processor, proving that it's the graphics chip that really matters.
What size do you think that CRT is? 28"?
We still need a thunder force collection on the 360 and PS3.
I like the PC-Engine a hell of a lot more than the Snes. It has a much better library.

I'm young but i love old games
So you can't see the massive jump in specs, that those systems have?
It has more on-screen colour than the Mega Drive, but can't quite throw as many large sprites around. Great system, but still 8-bit :P
Would like to see your custom arcade machine - which forum is it on?
Flame throwers in outer space? Yes, please!
Great game my favorite of the series! They way all shmups should be!
Final Soldier is the best entry for beginners. Soldier Blade is much harder but easily much better. That said, all three of the PCE Soldier games are worth playing.
(Still waiting for that Soldier Blade review.)
I really like this style of games
My second favorite shmup game... 1st being Soldier Blade...
This is way better than Soldier Blade.... Soldier blade has an astonishing first wave, but after that it becomes crap. This is great throughout with the best music of the series. I also like the option to select weapon behaviour.
mark should get a truxton arcade machine and review the pc engine version
How does one send a game to Classic Game Room?
It's 8-bit primarily - it has a 16-bit video system but the CPU is 8-bit.
Probably tells you on their website.
Wanna play a challenging space shooter, play Super R-type for the SNES. That game was a pain to beat!
They are both 256 colours 64 sprites per line, You can find it on pcenginefx
This game was a Japan-only release. It never made it to the TG-16.
...Oh, yeah, and super CD arcade card games like Fatal Fury 2 and Strider! Strider had great music. Also Forgotten worlds for the PC Engine Super CD! Also, more great music!
we need more pc-engine/turbografx reviews. I hope there'll be some crazy pc-engine fans soon that will drown him with games and stuff for it
try Under Defeat: Deluxe Edition or Mamoru-kun wa Norowarete Shimatta!
Looks so much better than 1943, was this legit 16? I thought it was 8?
Deathsmiles is good too. But yeah there has been a lack of them.
There's also Neo Nectaris (Military Madness), Devils Crush and Alien Crush, and ShuBinBIn Man 3!
You need to get yourself a PC Engine looks like, Mark. Unless your Turbo is modded really truly shouldn't be ignored.
Lol. You can outrun the homing lasers way more easily by pressing select to increase the ship speed.
8 bit cpu, 2x16 gpu. It screamed! Way ahead of it's time.
awesome game! :O beats lots of shooters on the Nintendo and even some in the Super Nintendo! damn
pce...not an 8 bit system... yes it has an 8 bit cpu but also two 16 bit video processing units :P
can you review gameshark psx
Of course they do, as everything goes through the CPU at some point then the 8-bit CPU is the bottleneck.
16-bit CPUs were probably too expensive in 1987.
i'll take whatever Mark prescribes to me. i'll go buy this game and a PC Engine.
I'd still class it as 16-bit overall (hell it was advertised as so being the 1st console with such 'bits'). By that logic SNES should be 8-bit too. Not like bit's ever mattered anyways.
What's the name? Bubble Man X ?
It is said that, once it has reviewed every single object in the universe, the Intergalactic Space Arcade will land on the barren remains of Earth and restart humanity, but better. Let's all hope.
Aren't you the guy from "this week in Linux"?
Not really, the CPUs are very different (8-bit HuC6820 vs 16-bit 68000), as is the graphics and sound hardware.
Well yes. SNES uses 2 8-bit processors to add it upto 16-bit. So call it what you want but by your logic that would make it 8-bit.
Actually this is a Japan exclusive. Never released in America
ITS HAS A 16 BIT GRAPHICS CHIP BUT AN 8 BIT PROCESSOR IT IS BASICALLY EXACTLY THE SAME SPEC AS A MEGADRIVE
Mark, looking a little rough today.
dunno dude, how does one send anything into space?
that's an 8-bit game?! holy crap lol
This is the best of the series, and one of the top 5 games on the PC Engine, others being Bomberman 94, Neutopia II, Galaga 88 and Jackie Chan. There's an idea for a game - a clean 'em up.
Touché.
