I still remember my first time playing this in the arcade, way back in 2013. It was at a McDonald's in upstate New York somewhere, they had a small arcade and one of the games was a stand up Outrun machine.
Magical Sound Shower, baby! Always loved the OutRun music.
I bet the people who disliked this are stuck in 1982 and refuse to move on from Pole Position
This game was so great. I played it for hours on end on my computer back in the day. A true classic.

This version is technically closer to the arcade than the Genesis version. The genesis version lacks some graphical details, most noticeably some big sprites on the scenario(like the ancient towers on the second checkpoint).
Glad to know you're back reviewing PC-Engine games, Mark! The PC-Engine really rocks! It may not have blast processing, but it has blast coloring (that was a bad joke, I know. But its color palette is really superior to the Genesis one).

I have this version, loose but still. I think its a great port for the PCE/TG16.
I remember this game. It was awesome. The cabinet had a steering wheel for a controller, making it even better. The music was awesome and when you got a nice groove going and a long cruise, it was zen like.
It is like a mid-term between Genesis and Master System versions!
I have OutRun on my Nintendo Switch Lite and I LOVE IT!
I have outrun 2 for the xbox which has the original arcade version as an unlockable. I also have outrun 2006. I love outrun so much.
This really was the best home port. 3DS owners are required to download the definitive, arcade SUPERIOR 3D remaster, especially for a few bucks.

***** really? the only difference that i can see between the Saturn version and the 3DS version is the music.
but still, you gotta give it to video game developer M2 for being able to do a near-perfect handheld port of the actual arcade game and even adding little bells and whistles here and there, even going as far as trying to emulate what it's like playing on an actual Outrun arcade machine.
Mark, get the Sega Ages Collection for your Sega Saturn! The best home console version for OutRun is on it, it runs at 60fps and looks slightly better than even the arcade version!

I played Outrun yesterday on my Genesis. I think the PCE's music is a touch better. Outrun arcade has pretty darn good graphics, and they still hold up in my opinion. I think the music and the gameplay are so wonderful in all 8/16 bit ports as well as the arcade. I used to play the Master System version on my Game Gear via a third party adapter. I'm surprised that there isn't a Famicom version from Tengen, along with Shinobi and Afterburner.
For an 8-bit console, this version of OutRun is superb!

Sega ages version on the Saturn is a really great version, even has both FM and arranged versions of the soundtrack that you can switch between in the options menu. it's the only console version (apart from the 3ds) that runs at 60 fps.

I love the Pc Engine. I even have a Turbo Duo. This is a good version. But the Genesis version is better. Especially the music.
If you like the PC-ENGINE version check out on the 3DS as its an arcade recreation with a bunch of extras. Totally worth getting it
Cannonball does this so much justice, if you love classic genesis Outrun then you'll love the 60fps remaster.

I still haven't played the original outrun game, but I do enjoy Outrun 2019.
How did such good games fit onto the TG16/PC Engine game cards? Presumably the storage space was limited when compared to the massive carts on other systems. Also, I remember most of the Master System card games being very limited when compared to the "two mega" and "four mega" carts. Give ,e the science here, Mark.

I'm not a fan of the early Outrun but the soundtrack was definitely awesome even back then.
I wonder if mark still likes the version of OutRun from that Sega 2500 compilation disc for PS2 (can't remember the damn name of it).

Yeah, versus the Genesis version, the PC Engine version plays MUCH more smoothly and is much more fun to play, but the Genesis version has better graphics in still shots, because there are more trackside objects on the Genesis but it runs choppily. The PCE version is better for sure, overall, but it is interesting to compare them.
I'd say the best way to play outrun at home is to get outrun 2, you can unlock it with the code 1986 or something like that

Falcon Bleck I've never played it but it looks like a pretty faithful remake.
Now THIS is what I'm talking about! This is a damn good version of Outrun, although it wasn't released in the west for the Turbografx 16, it has the western map layout, as for the Genesis version, no matter what version you get, you get the Japanese map layout, and well, the Western map is better than the Japanese one...
The Genesis version is visually and sound-wise closer to the arcade (how come?) both play great, but the PC engine one has the map layout we all know and love~
You can't go wrong with either version though, In fact, you can't go wrong with outrun in general, it's such a great game!
Also, more PC engine and MSX in the future? Highly approved!

But I love Outrun 2019 too, it's one of the better racing games on the Genesis in my opinion, I love just how much it pushes the Genesis hardware, it runs so smooth, and it has those paths that go above ground, it's amazing!
The greatest driving game of all time! It beats Pole Position II and Chase HQ, in my opinion.
Hang On was pretty good too.

I have the XBLA version, it's not bad, just nobody online anymore.
I've never beaten this game, but maybe I would if I actually played more of it. I also think Mark should take a look at those 3D Classics by Sega on the 3DS some time. They include games like Space Harrier, Afterburner, Fantasy Zone and yes, even OutRun!

You can get them and more on PC via Steam, but the 3D versions are exclusive to the 3DS system, which is all versions if you don't include the 2DS which doesn't have a 3D slider.
I also have the pc engine duo but the sound is broken and it only makes fart noises after about half an hour of play

The Genesis version sounds better but this one looks more colorful. Genesis also has more effects and backgrounds. In the end the Saturn version is still the definitive experience with it's 60fps gameplay.

3:02 "Hurray you've reached the goal, and your Ferrari breaks down." That sounds about right. Ferraris aren't known for their reliability. They're pretty high maintenance machines. Want reliability, buy a Porsche.

They already did a few remakes: Outrun 2 is basically a remake and an earlier PS2 3D Anniversary Edition?!

Actually, the PC Engine have more "blast processing" than the sega genesis, due having a CPU with quite high IPC for the time at a decent clock rate.
But the video chip was inferior to the sega genesis one due not having multiple background layers.
That's indeed a thing.
But the funny thing about the PC Engine is that *ANY* sort of large boss or character like bonk 3's bonk with the power up is actually made out of a lot of sprites being positioned with the raw grunt of the CPU, given the fact you can't cheat with overlay backgrounds like on snes or genesis.

Great review as always Mark. Just one thing Yu Suzuki (apologies to the creator as incorrect spelling) himself has said that it is not a racing game as such. The other vehicles only represent traffic not competitors. He referred to it as a "driving game". Poss the first that wasn't a racer.

+NoeLPZC The Megadrive version just looks a bit 'off' (can't really explain it). If you were to compare this version to it, side-by-side the PC Engine version looks far closer to the arcade version, aesthetically speaking.
Agreed... The Redrawn graphics on PCE are better than the MD version, MD graphics looks like a 9yr old redrew them... 🤠
Ha, all of the above, PLUS you could play it portably and on a quality TFT active matrix LCD on a PC Engine GT (or Turbo Express w adapter), which must have looked especially incredible back in the day (the perceived resolution and smoothness are accentuated on a small display). All thanks to super efficient 3-chip PC Engine design and cool, tiny HuCards!
I beat the DOS version. Yep.
I didn't have one but those cards look cooler than cartridges IMO. I like how the pixelated Ferrari logo flips direction depending on which direction you're steering.
This is a great looking (and playing) version of the game and they've done an excellent job with the music, but damn, that engine sound is terrible. I can't believe they couldn't have done something with it to make it sound less fart like.

Watching Lord Karnage's Genesis version, the TurboGrafix (er... PC Engine) version of this game is FAR far inferior. The car is much more detailed and more animated. The screeching sound is better and graphics are much more crisp. The only thing the TG16 has the advantage of is that it has engine sounds.
MD car looks 'odd' and gameplay is mushy

This version highlights not just now good this version is but more how poor other version are. The Sega MD could have done a lot better.
Am sorry Mark but I don't agree with you. The Genesis/MwgaDrive version IS better. I was a SEGA guyvway back when and I played the heck out of it.
The PS2 version was also quite good, Outrun 2006
