Hahaha, my Indian husband wanted to wear a Lungi for our wedding in Turkey. There was a lot of back and forth and he finally agreed to wear a suit. 😃😃 Maybe we will have another proper Indian wedding in India where he can wear a Lungi and I can wear the traditional Indian wedding dress. Love your videos! Love from Turkey ❤️🙏

The lungi is actually stitched to make it circular, then you wear it and when you tie it around your waist, it has to make an inverted V shape. This will allow enough room for your leg movement. I can't explain it in words!! BTW how come you haven't tried the veshti with velcro? It stays securely around your waist plus it has pockets too!!

When I was a Hare Krishna I was told by other prabhus that there were 108 ways to put on a dhoti. You can get a vesthi (waisty) with Velcro around the top that makes it s uper secure. Next thing to do is to watch some VJ music videos to see how to fold it up so you can dance and run. After a while you will grow to love the lungi for hanging out at home. Way cooler than sweats. All you need now is the white button down shirt to be a cool white tata. 😀

I was almost about to panic, thinking that you didn't realize that lungi and dhoti/veshti are two different things. I lived in Chennai for 6 years, and the first time I said "lungi" while talking about someone's veshti, the person got seriously offended, and sat me down to have a long conversation about all the differences in style, purpose, and cultural connotation.
I hope you also try out the different styles. In Tamil Nadu, people usually wear a veshti by wrapping it around. But priests wear what is called a "panchakaccham" (pancha comes from the Sanskrit word for five, and the kaccham refers to the pleating). In other parts of India, like in eastern and northern India, the pleated form is the norm and nobody wears the simpler wrap-around style.

Panchakachcham means 5 knots or 5 places its secured not 5 pleats. 2 places on the waist on the sides/front, 1 at the back at close to bottom of spine, 2 at the front just below the navel so folded that the bottom border rises vertically both at front and back.

You can buy in Ramraj Cotton shops Velcro veshti and stitched lungis. Then you don't need to worry about tying them properly.
Veshtis are to be worn when attending marriage functions, going to temples etc. They are more like pants
Lungis are casual wear and to be worn in house, they are more like shorts and night dresses

In lungi, you have to get your legs inside it and start to fold it, veshti, as you did, but we use red colour thread, which all men wear around their hip(seperates upper and lower body)called araignyaan Kayir. , we use it to hold veshti or lungi more stronger.

Wear a solid color dhoti when going to temple. The ones with the colorful design are more casual in Kerala we call it Kayili, For the solid colored one like the white we call it Mund. Sabarimala temple devotees wear black, while the white and saffron for temple and for formal occasions white only.

One more suggestions.. - as u said u are going to wear this in local functions and temples..... Veshti is the mostly used for that places ....lungis are mostly used inside home and any nearby places not for functions like that. And also mostly people are not mostly use black in good functions and places because we have a belief that black is not more religious dress ( may be some wear ).

The go left n go right at the beginning of wearing is according to region and according to the occasion... It's also cultural identity...
Tamils go left n then go right, I guess malayalis also same.... Kannadagas and telgites go right and then left...
The extra length is adjusted in the first turn by folding it inwards to the desired length before going left(or right)... Or u can simple get it stitched into a cylindrical cloth to ur size

Originally it's not veshti, vaetti in Tamil, it becomes veshti by other Dravidian languages, veshti becomes dhothi by north Indians. White vaetti is a formal one.
