This just makes me want Mihawk to at one point say he will make Buggy the Pirate King.
Early one piece villains were so wonderfully delusional. Dumbasses like Buggy, Krieg and arlong all thinking they could rule the grandline, even though each of them had experience with how terrifying the peaks of power in this world are. Buggy knew Roger and whitebeard firsthand, Krieg got clapped by mihawk, arlong was battered by kizaru. And they still think they can be the greatest...

At least in Arlong’s case, he knew his limits. He only wanted to rule the East Blue.
And as we found out recently-ish in the manga, Alvida genuinely hyped herself up to be above the Emperors.
It’s always felt significant to me that when Buggy talks about how ‘brightly’ Shanks shone, the panel doesn’t show a memory of Shanks doing anything cool. He’s not fighting, he’s not exhibiting any skills or prowess- he’s being patted on the head by Roger. I think Buggy’s real dream was inheriting Roger’s will. He perceives that Shanks inherits it, because of the straw hat and the way Roger treats him. Buggy can’t achieve his dream because it’s been given to Shanks (or so he thinks.) That’s why he is willing to follow and support Shanks- because it’s through that inherited will that Roger will survive past death.
When Shanks refuses to go after the One Piece, it’s not just the sting of him throwing away what Buggy wanted most and didn’t feel capable of- it’s the sting of seeing Roger’s will thrown away. The way he speaks during this scene points to it too. He doesn’t say ‘Didn’t you say you would’ to Shanks, he says ‘Didn’t you tell Roger you would.’ It’s not so much about Shanks himself as it is about Buggy’s love for Roger. I think that’s why it hurt Buggy so deeply, even though I doubt he understands this consciously.
This further hits when you realize how much Buggy copies Roger. Doing things in the flashiest way possible, calling Rayleigh/Mr 3 partner, even his look. Chin growth, cravat, bandanna, tricorn hat, sash & pirate captain's coat (fair enough most people wear a sash and coat but still.
Comedy is One Piece's ultimate technique. No amount of time skip power scaling can stop it.
Luffy on gear 5 uses comedy as a fighting style.... does that mean that buggy scales to gear 5 confirmed??????????

The fact that Buggy's healthier and happier relationship to his crew is because of a run-in with Gaimon is one of the top 10 greatest thing I've ever learned about this series
Also Luffy growing from fighting fair to fighring dirty is a neat little detail I hadn't noticed. Luffy was so naive but after learning that pirates don't necessarily all have a code of conduct in battle, he's accepted that as a trutth and lesson learned for years to come.
It was actually Croc that drilled that into him with the fight down in the poneglyph chamber.
that is only half true tho. Luffy's enitre stance on fighting fair/dirty only applies to his opponents. he doesn't hold them to any standards of fairness. but Luffy holds himself to the highest of standards when it comes to fighting fair. And it's not a matter of morality, Luffy wants to be the strongest so when it comes to besting an oppononet he sees as someone he NEEDS to beat to become pirate king (Katakuri, Kaido etc), he fights fair. That does not mean Luffy wouldn't be pragmatic in high stakes situations, he did not reject Kid, Law, Zoro and Killer fighting alongside him against Kaido (although they were all competetive about it) but if Luffy had a choice in it, he would have chosen to beat Kaido by himself (which is what the fight eventually turns into, barring the few interruptions from Momo & Yamato) even if it meant certain defeat (which is exactly what happens not once, not twice, but thrice) because if he couldn't beat the likes of Kaido and Katakuri fairly, he would never become pirate king.

To be fair as a villain Buggy is B-Tier but as a character Buggy is easliy S-Tier.

not *his* atoms, if you recall it, the awakening of a paramecia, usually has to do with affecting the environment around you with the powers of your fruit, so if he manages to awaken it, that could very well be a possibility

I just realized that other than the cross guild chapter between wano and egghead, we havent checked in with buggy at all during the events happening on egghead
I started reading One Piece in 2003, shortly after it was published in Shonen Jump here in Canada, and even then, at 7 years old, I loved Buggy. He was so scary at first, but Luffy being able to turn someone so intimidating as Buggy made me love Luffy even more. Seeing Buggy's chibi adventures was one of my favourite parts of every chapter. And then his return in Loguetown!! I don't think I'll ever forget the feeling of seeing Luffy grin before Buggy executes him. His return in Impel Down! Slowly amassing former villains to his side. For me, that was just as exciting as the return to Sabaody. Oda has created a villain and a rival for Luffy so likeable that some of us want him to beat the main character to his goals. That is a remarkable feat of writing.
I wouldn’t be disappointed with a buggy spin off. Seeing the circus sail around destroying stuff would be pretty awesome

You talk about buggy being as strong as shanks. But at the time, shanks was basically just a red haired sea hobo. We had no information of his power.

Buggy getting kicked in the nuts in the anime is one of my favorite scenes because they also included the sound effect of cracking walnuts
seeing as LA luffy calls buggy Boogie, i’m making it my headcannon that the events in the LA aren’t an adaptation but an alternate reality.

I count the iconic scene of Luffy kicking Buggy in the nuts as the first piece of foreshadowing that Laugh Tale is a D joke.
Buggy is my favorite non-Straw Hat Pirate character in One Piece, I just can't get enough of this guy! I get the feeling Oda liked him so much that he keeps finding excuses to keep him involved in the plot, even when he doesn't do anything involved with the Straw Hat Pirates. Given how much he keeps failing upwards, I wouldn't be surprised if he actually does find One Piece first, by some miraculous piece of dumb luck.
What sticks out about him, for me anyway, is how he was introduced vs. what he became afterward. While he was still comedic in his introduction arc, Oda still tried to make him seem menacing and cruel, and had him use his own men as shields when Luffy bounced one of his Buggy Balls back at him. He's mellowed out considerably since then, and I'd like to think it was his misadventures immediately after being defeated by Luffy that gave him character growth and taught him to value his crew more, especially after seeing they memorialized him when they thought he was dead. There are also some odd continuity things regarding involving his flashback, but that doesn't impact his character all that much, it's just a bunch of weird contrivances. That said, I DO like how Oda managed to keep the whole "I hate Shanks because of this one treasure he prevented me from getting (even though it was mostly Buggy's fault)" thing despite Buggy and Shanks seemingly still continuing to be friends after this flashback years later, when it's revealed that Buggy is using that as a cover for the real reason he's resentful of Shanks: he thought Shanks (as the clear favorite of the two with their captain Gol D. Roger) would want to uphold Roger's legacy and go to Laugh Tale and was offended that he didn't want to immediately do that. It's details like this that make Buggy feel like a richer character than I initially gave him credit for, and again, he was already one of my favorite characters before this, and I just find it super impressive (and flashy)!

Buggy is a record holder, first character to be in the main story, go into the cover story, and come back into the main story.
Out of all the characters in One Piece, Buggy is the one I want to see become Pirate King the most.
Me too, I really want Luffy to achieve Pirate King but then almost immediately relinquish that title to Buggy. Though I'm not entirely sure what king of the pirates means yet.
@@tavariswilson3361 Luffy would totally give up the title of Pirate King the moment anyone tries to ascribe significance to it. He simply desires the freedom that comes with the title of Pirate King. On the other hand, Buggy views the title of Pirate King as Roger's legacy and therefore aims to uphold it.
So Luffy relinquished the title to Buggy, everyone doing the shocked Enel face and the Strawhats laughing while they race back to their ship is the way I see One Piece ending.

Interestingly enough, the anime's decision to make early Buggy more lenient and goofy turned out to make him more consistent in the long run.
It might be a coincidence but Buggy is also the only one who has ever damaged Luffy's strawhat.
He stabbed it and left 3 marks on it which are still visible in some recent panels which reminds me of Shanks' 3 scars that Blackbeard left on his face offscreen. All of those four guys are the current Yonko...

During Marineford arc Buggy unleashed his new secret weapon - Muggy Ball. I think this was a great foreshadowing to his final power up, when every single atom within Buggy's reach will became like Muggy Ball but thousands times stronger.
The mother flame is pretty much looking like a nuclear reactor by the way it's portrayed so that would mean the wepon imu uses is a nuclear powered wepon

To me buggy is an anti-hero. Kinda like venom in spider-man. Bug is a “bad guy” but not a villain per say. He does bad things but sometimes your goals line up and you end up having to team up with him to beat a bigger and badder threat

It still amazes me how this character change from being a comedic villain to one of the four most powerful pirate captains in the world.
It would be wild if he somehow gets the other warlords to join Cross Guild. That would basically be the Rocks Pirates 2.0. Matter of fact, it would be insane if Buggy inherited Xebec's will this whole time. It would sure be one heck of a joke that Oda played on us.

What I love is buggy made his declaration at his lowest point at the mercy of 2 former warlords who are insane powerhouses in their own right and buggy basically said you guy are cowards the only reason you don’t want the one piece is because you don’t want it bad enough while mihawk and croc are torturing him out of boredom
To be fair to the government on the Impel Down thing, Buggy was the first person to join Luffy's breakout squad (albeit reluctantly), and he was directly responsible for releasing half the bulk of the final army that aided in the breakout, who then went on to be full-time members of his crew. So, calling him a ringleader isn't exactly wrong.

At the end of the fight for Laugh Tale, Luffy + allies will head towards taking down the world gov. Buggy being Buggy won't leave the island to join and when Morgan shows up to write the headline only Buggy's crew will remain and Morgan will name him as Pirate King!
Buggy might be my favorite character, and a great antagonist in his own way. But he hasn't been a villain in so long that there is no way he's S tier. If anything, he's closer to a hero now and I still cry every time I read his speech to Mikawk and Crocodile. And right now I don't know if I can see our rubber nosed friend as anything else but a hero and as much as everyone else wants to see how Luffy's journey ends, I want to see the same for Buggy, and maybe even more. Might be funny to see what history will remember of the everyones favorite clown in the world of one piece years after the events of the story have ended

Buggy should be so broken when his devil fruit awakens, but knowing oda, he would probably be like, Buggy's Awakening? Yeah he can fly his feet with his awakening.
To be honest, that would be super strong considering how fruit works. It's literally the only weakness the fruit has. With that change he could fly, teleport, greatly increase his attack range and unpredictability.
Additionally, Buggy's fruit is one of the strongest in One Piece.

I think Luffy's change in opinion is just a reflection of character growth and understanding of what he has to deal with if he wants to become the king of the pirates

This was a great video in my opinion because it touched on all the right points about buggy as a villain. Over the years of watching, reading, listening to one piece I grew from not liking buggy/hating him actually to me growing fond of him and being excited about buggy as a true rival to luffy.

Buggy is more than just a mere villain he is a force of nature that cannot be stopped. He started out as a joke but soon the joke will be on everyone else because I believe Buggy will be the next pirate king.

Tbh, I kinda like the way that the live action version portrayed buggy. He is shown as a lot more dangerous and very cunning, but still keeps up some form of comedic relief to come.

11:23 Buggy in Orange Town was "a big fish in a small pond". He was a devilfruit user, in a region where that (and the counters) are a rarity. His crew crossed blades with Zorro and didn't die. Running into Luffy was incredibly bad luck for him.
Ever since then, he has been out of his depth. Perpetually on the backfoot. Always stumbling into situations way above his power level.
He went on revenge vs luffy and ended up in a town with _Smoker_ and _Dragon_ of all people.
Then he ended up in Impel Down, with _Magellan_ as the main antagonist.
Then he stumbled into leadership of the cross guild, with Mihawk and Crocodile.

Buggy’s awakening would be crazy. Instead of just being able to cut himself up, it might be similar to laws ability to cut other things. He could even split mountains possibly if he wanted too.
It's fair.. I love Buggy, but he's not just a villain! Ha ha, love it and am looking forward to any potential videos you may feel like dlong on Buggy, because i loved your commentary on his growth as a character; it was really insightful.
As for which I'd like you to rank next, I've said if before, but Id love you to rank Spandam. Say what you will about him being overshadowed by Lucchi, but he was without a doubt the driving force behind Water 7 abd Eines Lobby; a major antagonist behind an arc. Hia Dragon was just real cool and the actual physical threat; but if you needed to actually challenge Luffy in a fight to qualify that definitely lets out the enture East Blue sans Arlong and also Wapol.

3:30 - I'd like to think the inconsistency of Luffy saying "There's no such thing as fighting dirty in a battle between Pirates" to Karakuri is character growth. When he complained about fair fights in East Blue, he was still a naive rookie that expected other Pirates to hold themselves to his standards and how he perceived Shanks. But by time he reached Whole Cake Island, he's much more weathered and experienced, and knows full well that many of his enemies will take every advantage they can get to kill him, so he doesn't really see enemies playing every card they have as dirty tricks amymore. Either that or his morals have shifted to the point where he's more accepting of people thay don't fight how he would.

Buggy would have killed Luffy in Loguetown if dragon hadn't stopped him, just let that sink in. The sun god nika, the face of the new generation, the spirit of joyboy, the successor to the king of pirates would have died that day, and I really believe that, cuz luffy himself had actually accepted it at the time, and he had a smile on his face and no regrets, just like how ace died in marineford, and Luffy wasn't even trying to escape, he just kinda accepted it.

He is never serious unless its a life or death matter and has lots of banquets - Like Luffy
He is Merciless and Opportunistic - Like Blackbeard
He is Strong by ability and Character- Talks like equals with Shanks, can match Luffy in stamina and meticulously makes ppl join him with either alliance (Alvida) or groveling (Crocodile and Mihawk). Also thoughtful and intelligent coz he knows who to get a loan from and who to leave alone (could have joined Doffy), and in accepting Warlordship (could have rejected if he wanted).
He is above the others bcoz of his Luck factor. Luffy lacks brains (bro needs to plan his moves atleast now that he is a yonkou, BB makes his own luck(goes for shit he needs, gets it and leaves doesn't push it), Shanks has brains no luck (lol who loses an arm to a sea king when u can defeat Fleet Admirals with one arm😐). Buggy has both brains and luck and the ability to match the other Yonkous.
