"There's no point in asking, he doesn't row." "He doesn't row?" "No, he *doesn't* row." "Ah, I see what you mean." Literally only just got that he means he knows that Booker won't row because they've already been here before and know Booker doesn't do any rowing. I am dumb.
I'm pretty sure he means row as in know, there's only 2 ores for the rowing so he doesn't mean the actual rowing, it's just a pun he throws it out since Booker has no recollection of the actual events from before, thus he *doesn't* row
I take it to mean that Booker doesn't refuse to row if it comes up (He doesn't row?"), but that in all the timelines, never in any case does he row ("No, he DOESN'T row.").
"I never find that as satisfying as I'd imagined." "Chin up, there's always next time." Wait, but just like how it's heads every time, he won't find it satisfying every time.
They are flirting with the thought of a different outcome, because they are warping their reality every-time by brining booker back to do his job. If you have noticed it, they each change their view on the possibility of a different outcome as in "he DOSEN'T row" but "I never find it as satisfying as i'd imagined" both male and female believes/doubts the experiment through out the entire game. I imagine its because they are the same, but both in the same place, therefor doubt in each others beliefs from time to time.
Elizabeth: I just realized who does two are. They- well at least *she* invented the technology that allows the city to float. Booker: *Giant balloons?* Elizabeth: Quantum particles suspended in space time at a fixed height. Booker: Soo.. *Not giant balloons?* Lmfao
This is true. I'm sorry it's not included in this video. According to a large percentage of the comments here it's the only bit I missed (pun intended).
Jester Aron *continuation of Aspiring Marauder's comment* ...And the part where you walk up to them after the heads or tails, wait a little until Rosalind says something like. 'Move along now. We won't leave until you do...' (Which is basically a huge nod towards a lot of other videogames where NPC's just disappear and appear somewhere else as soon as you take your eyes off them.
One of the things that I really liked about these characters is that they're introduced as almost wacky, comic relief characters. But then they start to seem more mysterious. Then, knowing characters. And finally, almost god like. But they never lose their sense of humor. I also like that they play off each other, as well. It certainly makes their conversations all the more interesting.
I want a universe twin like this. I feel like the constant competition would make you a smarter person, always in the pursuit of knowledge and betterment of self.
I loved the Schrodringers cat aspect to the Luteces, also found it surprising that the VA for Rosalind was Jennifer Hale. You did miss some dialogue though.
lunavixen015 Late reply i know but i have to share my observation ;) In the game there was a clear reference to Schrodinger's Cat: When you entered a tear in a universe where Chen Li was alive the soldiers you killed were both alive and dead at the same time. I bet this moment was inspired by Schrodingers work.
Damian K I know this is a year after, but holy crap. I would've NEVER realized the Schrödinger's cat situation going on with the "dead" soldiers... That's an astounding discovery!
Rosalind must be one of the most narcissistic characters to be ever created...! S/he couldn't settle for anything less than her/himself and s/he chooses to spend the rest of eternity with her/himself. What Rosalind lacks in human empathy though, Robert makes up for it since this whole redemption thing was his idea... so it all balances out.
You left out a few lines, such as what they say if Booker sits with them in the boat too long, or what they say if you try to shoot them in the Blind pig, or when you talk to them some more at the fair. Also, the part where Booker first wakes up and Robert is shouting "BRING US THE GIRL, AND WIPE AWAY THE DEBT" and all that. Oh, and when Robert is juggling baseballs before the raffle.
OH, and one of my favorite parts: the third tear when he is talking about how their funeral photo looks lifeless, and then the voxophone says "rupert, they have been dead these seven days!"
They need their own TV show. Oh good lord that be amazing! Traveling through universes, making right what went wrong, Crime fighting and stopping reality destroying villains. It's like Quantum Leap meets Doctor Who meets Law and Order! I can only imagine the conversations these two would have.
I totally did not recognize Jennifer Hale's voice as Rosalind throughout the entire game....I was pleasantly surprised that there is still material in her repertoire that I haven't seen yet.
@ 9:18 Just noticed that Robert is painting and Rosalind is modeling for the portrait, but on the canvas, Robert has painted himself. Just another hint that they are in fact the same person from different universes and not merely siblings. :)
At the beginning with the coin flip, when you see all of those tally marks for Heads... that's because they've entered through so many tears and asked an alternate Booker that many times. Every tally mark is from Booker's coin flip, yet always an alternate Booker in an alternate Columbia. Interesting, isn't it? No matter what world it is, he always loses the coin flip. Always.
In one of her dialogues, she says that the field entangled her ADAM field with light that allows her to traverse. This happened simultaneously with her brother.
No problem! :) Great to have someone willing to take a step out to venture other platforms, which in this case i am sure you would find, is much better than anything you've expected
You forgot the "mist" dialogue if you repeatedly try to hit ether one of them when they give you the shield they will say things like "mist" and "mist again" or "Four out of Five"
Awh, if only you moved the camera to Elizabeth at around 8:55-ish... Liz's face is priceless in that scene! XD Thanks for the compilation though, these guys are just incredible!
My theory on the Luteces: Both existed normally at one time, however one was killed during an accident or whatever. After that in one branch only Robert lived, and in the other only Rosalind lived. Rosalind found out about the way to open tears, being able to resurrect her brother, however him not knowing how this works it put him into the same state as the people after the Gunsmith scene (those Zombie-like people). So she informed Robert on how that would work, making him knowing it and vise versa. Which resulted in Comstock not being able to kill them, as Rosalind would be resurrected by Robert and backwards.
The 19th Fighter Robert/Rosaline are one person, they don't have a twin sibling. I'd say it's a constant that Rosaline will always bring Robert to her world, and since the two look so similar, people understandably mistake them as twins. And they died because Comstock had Fink sabotage the tear machine, killing them.
The 19th Fighter It's been hinted several times. For an example, the changing statue in BioShock. It says Robert, than changes to Rosaline, hinting the fact they are the same. The wiki also states this.
Jass Jake My only problem is that why did only Robert die than, If they're the same person (Rosalind should be dead as well, at least in one universe). And why is he always taking the exact opposite guess than Rosalind. The thing with Robert drawing Rosalind could be understood, as they are not bound to time and space, it could also be Rosalind who's drawing Robert (Remember they are really strong connected together, maybe Rosalind also overwrote parts of Robert, when she was solving the dead and alive paradox, making him see him as her and vise versa). Maybe they are different people, but as they are twins it doesn't matter which of them has which gender. Who knows. I bet in the end it was just intended to be a funny scene.
SteviaCookies But after that happened, Comstock tried to kill them by shutting off the machine before they could come back, they kind of got stuck between worlds, which is why they can be wherever you are. They aren't really in that same universe with the one bed. They're kind of everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Thus, only one bed.
I think you'll find that his features have been blacked out so that you don't know it's them until later in the story (by then you would recognise their voices and realise that it was them all along)
They've done this "experiment" which is sending you for Elizabeth, and you didn't row back then in the previous experiments, so he is saying, that you'll neither do it this time!
If events, such as the results of a flip of a coin, are constants, and choices, such as whether you chose heads or tails, are variables, it makes sense that a person going through different dimensions will still find the same faces, albiet, in different circumstances. The event of their birth is constant. How they are born are variables. A theory: Is a person who is both a man and a woman through the dimensions destined to not give birth? It makes sense for the Luteces because they're both dead and been made sterile by their machine. Thoughts?
Rosalind states that Comstock becomes sterile because of switching between realities, so would that also make Robert, Liz, and Booker also? I mean obviously Booker and Comstock are the same person but just wondering if Robert would be affected in the same way?
Abigail Schullerts comstock used the machine far more times than booker and elizabeth, while elizabeth and both of the luteces were created by a paradox, with elizabeth physical form scattered across two dimentions and the luteces being caught in a sabotaged contraption results in them achieving quantuum superposition or something of the sort
He says because they have done the loop so many times. same reason there are all heads on the chalk board. They know he doesn't row because he never does.
That is something you PC players don't realize. Some of us just like consoles, and we play them for the exclusive titles. Though we still play on PC for general titles.
*Semi-Spoilers?* Based on the conversation before I think it goes like this: Rosalind: "Perhaps you should ask him, I imagine he has a greater interest in getting there than I do." Robert: "I suppose he does, but there is no point in asking." Rosalind: "Why not?" Robert: "Because he doesn't 'row' (remember)." Rosalind: "He doesn't row?" Robert: "NO...he doesn't *ROW* (remember)..." Rosalind: "Ah...I see what you mean..." Because they put emphasis on the *row* like how you would if you were talking to someone about something you didn't want other people to know about. If you beat the game, you will realize why they would mean remember instead of actually meaning row.
Slightly different interpretation than the other commenter up there. SPOILERS. I think they're implying that Booker doesn't really have control over the events of the game, even if he might think so. The game is really interested in the idea of free will vs. determinism. Constants and variables. He's not the one with the power to change anything - that's Elizabeth. Booker doesn't row, aka, he's not in control of the boat. He can't do anything to stop Comstock. He's a passenger. The only way he can exit the boat is to jump off. Sure enough, how does Booker end up? Drowned in water.
What they're saying that is in all possible realities that they've met with Booker in, he never rows. Hence the emphasis on the word "doesn't" when he explains it to her. Based on the coin toss, they've actually met 123 different Bookers. They make reference to variables and constants. Just like the coin toss is always heads, Booker never rows.

@The Professor though it really is the best conversation between the 2
Amazing characters. Probably two of the best characters in the franchise.

Literally only just got that he means he knows that Booker won't row because they've already been here before and know Booker doesn't do any rowing. I am dumb.
I always thought that they meant "row" to mean "know"
As in, he doesn't know about where he's going, his importance there, or the "thought experiment"

Every scene with the luteces, if you've played through the game, foreshadows the ending. Fantastic writing on irrationals part

In the fifth scene, if you shoot Rosalind she say: "you miss" (because you obviously can t kill her)
And will eventually comment on how they can do this forever while you, with your finite ammunition can't.
You get extra dialogue if you try to shoot one of them when they give you the shield.

He is drawling her they're the same person
Because she is him. He is her. From another universe.
Yeah it was odd I don't understand the meaning of that scene.
Too clear things up they are not siblings they are the same person but from 2 diffrent realitys.

the Lutece Twins could appear as a easter in any game and it would make sense
Fun fact: In the piano scene, if you wait enough when Robert hands you the note on Songbird, Rosalind will play a waltz on the piano
The timing...or lack their of in their dialogues is the best part about their character.
Even now I could listen to these two all day. Amazing
Its the 113th time booker has been through the same sequence
I just realized Rosalind has the same voice actor as Bastila Shan from KOTOR.
So cool.
For Some Reason, I see those two as Phil and Lil From Rugrats as Adults.

My theory on the Luteces:
Both existed normally at one time, however one was killed during an accident or whatever. After that in one branch only Robert lived, and in the other only Rosalind lived. Rosalind found out about the way to open tears, being able to resurrect her brother, however him not knowing how this works it put him into the same state as the people after the Gunsmith scene (those Zombie-like people). I'd say it's a constant that Rosaline will always bring Robert to her world, and since the two look so similar, people understandably mistake them as twins. And they died because Comstock had Fink sabotage the tear machine, killing them.
Jass Jake What makes you so sure that they are one person. She seemed to know of her brother before she created the Lutece device.
The 19th Fighter It's been hinted several times. For an example, the changing statue in BioShock. It says Robert, than changes to Rosaline, hinting the fact they are the same. The wiki also states this.

Jass Jake You know what, never mind don't waste your time trying to explain it to me.
i love how when i ended the game all of their (well most of it anyway) banters make sense.
Ngl never played this game but I've gone down a loophole of videos about the plot and about these characters/character
First minute: the luteces have a pointless chat about rowing
Was I the only person that found it weird that the Lutece household appeared to only have one bed?
Spoiler: they are actually the same person from 2 different dimensions/realities.
WeAreN1nja It is Rosalind's bed. Robert isn't supposed to exist in Columbia.
Curiouser and curiouser, I tell you...
Hannah Wilkinson Yes, but Robert has lived in her dimension since Comstock took Elizabeth, and that's 16 years. 16 years and still only one bed...
One can’t help but wonder what happened to Robert’s universe, now that he doesn’t live there.
Probably not the Destruction of New York in the 1980's.
That's how my sister and I are like.
Everytime I hear Rosalind's voice, I can't believe that it's Jennifer Hale using her fantasy RPG voice without a strong accent attached to it.
I think you'll find that his features have been blacked out so that you don't know it's them until later in the story (by then you would recognise their voices and realise that it was them all along)
Come to think of it, the story of the Luteces is actually quite sad. This feeling is even stronger when hearing Rosalind's voxophone... :(
It's funny Jennifer hale as Rosalind sounds almost like bastila
This two guys are so majestic.
This game is incredible
I did too and never thought it was weird...THANKS A LOT.
They've done this "experiment" which is sending you for Elizabeth, and you didn't row back then in the previous experiments, so he is saying, that you'll neither do it this time!
The Luteces, in my opinion, are some of the best characters in gaming. Maybe even writing.
I think Booker can randomly say heads or tails, but it always ends up being heads.
Those guys were just spectacular!
Thoughts?
I wish was without any gunplay, it would've made it an absolute masterpiece.
They remind me of Fitz and Simmons from Agents of SHIELD.
I had that thought a few days ago!! If they ever made a bioshock infinite movie they need those 2!!
Robert, you are very Handsome. and Rosalind, you are very beautiful. I love you two!
2:10 Haha, I saw them there, but hadn’t noticed that they disappeared.
Agreed! Even their theme music is great!!
Btw, during the coin scene, Booker will say either "heads" or "tails". His guess switches, but the coin always lands heads.
The Luteces is my favorite characters in Bioshock
sometimes aimless characters like these two can keep the game entertaining
If they ever going to make a movie of this, I hope he'll be played by Conan O'Brien!
4:12 Um, why are there so many Infusions? Cheats?
+Magos X Not cheats, preorder dlc.
That is something you PC players don't realize. Some of us just like consoles, and we play them for the exclusive titles. Though we still play on PC for general titles.
I understand all the concepts and paradoxes, but there is one thing I don't understand. What does Lutece mean by "No, he DOESN'T row," ? Thanks.
Ah, I see. Thank you.
*Semi-Spoilers?*
Based on the conversation before I think it goes like this:
Rosalind: "Perhaps you should ask him, I imagine he has a greater interest in getting there than I do."
Robert: "I suppose he does, but there is no point in asking."
Rosalind: "Why not?"
Robert: "Because he doesn't 'row' (remember)."
Rosalind: "He doesn't row?"
Robert: "NO...he doesn't *ROW* (remember)..."
Rosalind: "Ah...I see what you mean..."
Because they put emphasis on the *row* like how you would if you were talking to someone about something you didn't want other people to know about. If you beat the game, you will realize why they would mean remember instead of actually meaning row.
I see. Yes I've completed the game but I though there would be some other meaning to it. I suppose I over-analyzed. Thank you very much.
That's very interesting. Thank you very much.
Have you guys ever tried to shoot the Luteces in the Scene in the Blue Ribbon? The dialogue is hilarious!
