  • In the first half of this oral history, Melanie Safka discusses growing up in a musically inclined family, the relief of aging, and her home life. Safka talks about running away from home at 18 to pursue her dream of becoming an actress, being put in a detention center, and being picked up by her father to go home. She recalls how she was discovered by Hugo and Luigi while on the way to a different audition, and how she met her husband. From there, Safka discusses her experience being signed to many different record labels, starting her own record label, and how she was treated by the music industry at large.
Melanie Safka is a singer-songwriter and guitarist. Best known for her hit songs “Brand New Key”, “What Have They Done To My Song Ma”, and international hit “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)”, Safka was one of three women in the original Woodstock line up. She has committed her life to art and promoting peace, performing at the UN and fundraising for UNICEF.

The Women of Rock Oral History Project is a collection of digital interviews and written transcripts, housed at the Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College-one of the oldest women’s history archives in the United States. Started by Tanya Pearson in December, 2014, WOROHP documents the lives and careers of women in rock whose work and careers have been underrepresented or omitted from rock journalism and historical scholarship. With a collection of publicized and accessible primary source documents, the Women of Rock Oral History Project seeks to facilitate a more comprehensive, inclusive, and accurate cultural history.

It's "Candles In The Rain." "Candle In The Wind" is an Elton John song.
