  • This video shows how to quickly and easily cut down 1947-1953 Chevy or Gmc 3/4 ton boxsides to fit a 1/2 ton shortbed chassis. A similar process can be used to shorten 9 foot 1 ton boxsides, however they will need to be shortened in front and behind the rear fenders. The truck in the video is a 1950 Chevy 3/4 ton that was missing it's drivetrain. The body is being put on a factory Shortbed chassis.

    I've alway's have like the flat windshields on these older trucks and cars I don't know what's it about them but I like them.

    You guys in Canada must have loads of these old pick-up trucks. I've seen no less than 3 other channels based out of Canada where someone is restoring or customizing an old Chevy, Ford or Internat'l pick-up from the "30's to early '50's. Right now on Half Ass Kustoms channel, Brent is restoring a very nice looking long bed '50 or '51 Chevy pick up. You should check him out. He recently built a high-boy, 4 door, pick-up (he calls the General) out of a 5th wheel tractor. It's unique and cool.

      Lots of farmland here so everyone had a pickup. We got hit hard during the great depression, so being resourceful ended up getting passed down from generation to generation. Nothing ever got thrown away, even today a lot of '50s and '60s trucks are still being used on farms. I do enjoy watching Halfass Kustoms too.

      Most people in Canada have 3-4 of these old pickups in their yards , it's kind of irritating but you get used to it! 😁😆

    Great explanation and step by step guide. Truck looks good. Did you alter the running boards or were they from a 1/2 ton?

    • @CarterAutoRestyling
      @CarterAutoRestyling  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I shortened the 3/4 ton running boards, it's funny because I ended up with a set of 1/2 ton running boards less then a week later....could have saved myself some time, but now I've got enough parts to put together a 1952 shortbox later this summer.

    I have the same truck in green. only the one I have is a bit better condition. I have been tempted to put it on a half ton frame and shorten the box but I just feel bad about changing anything on the the old rig.

    • @CarterAutoRestyling
      @CarterAutoRestyling  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah if this truck hadn't been missing the drivetrain I would have left it alone, the chassis was beat on it too. I had the running shortbox chassis so it made more sense to swap the body over. The old 3/4 and 1 ton trucks are really cool!

    Do you have any measurements of how much you cut off or what the bed length is now? Great job looks factory

    • @CarterAutoRestyling
      @CarterAutoRestyling  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, you will need to find a shortbed 3100 chassis to swap the body onto. The 3600 chassis is completely different

    Did you have to shorten the frame and the driveline. It looks like you did but I can’t quite tell. ?

    • @CarterAutoRestyling
      @CarterAutoRestyling  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I put the body on a factory 47-54 shortbox chassis. In theory you could shorten a longbed frame, but they are narrower behind the cab and you would still be stuck with heavy duty springs and an obsolete rear end and brakes. Shortbed frames for this era of truck are cheap and easy to come by thanks to the number of people doing s10 frame swaps.

    What about the steering geometry going scewwiff with different wheelbase? Ackerman angles etc? 😬

    • @CarterAutoRestyling
      @CarterAutoRestyling  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How about reading the description before trying to make a smart comment? The video is about shortening boxsides, not shortening a frame.

    • @tractorhead971
      @tractorhead971 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, steady on with the aggressive response dude! It was a genuine question and yes I hadn’t read you were using a shorter chassis so the geometry issue doesn’t apply. Apologies for that, I wasn’t trying to be cocky, I see lots of people changing their wheelbase and never mentioning steering geometry effects which must surely make the vehicle unsafe if cornering fast on a hard surface 🤷🏼‍♂️ I ask because I want to do something similar myself shortening a wheelbase about 12 inches and am concerned about these issues.

  • @rickbate2164

    How much did you take out of the frame ,thanks

    • @CarterAutoRestyling
      @CarterAutoRestyling  ปีที่แล้ว

      I used a short bed frame. The longbed frames are completely different from the cab back and use heavy duty brakes/rear axle which are harder to find parts for.

  • @fredjones1238
    @fredjones1238 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    i wish you showed cutting frame

    • @CarterAutoRestyling
      @CarterAutoRestyling  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried to make it clear in the title, video subtitles and description that I was shortening the boxsides only. A long bed frame is completely different from the shortbed frame, not to mention the drivetrain components and brakes are difficult to get parts for. As I said in the description, you need to find a factory shortbed frame to do this conversion.

      You don't have the attention span to finish writing a comment, yet you expect people to believe you're capable of spending 1000 hours doing paint and bodywork? I like vehicles with nice paint, and I like vehicles with aged paint. Not everyone has to be into the same thing, and "patina" or primer doesn't have to be a permanent finish. Would you rather these vehicles sit and rot in a field until they get scrapped?
