    I remember how McAfee detects Norton as a “threat” and Norton does the same with McAFee when you run them together

    • @lucassatie
      @lucassatie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1071

      That's actually how they're supposed to work though. It's not that it necessarily sees that it's a competitor's product but rather they detect that a program (any program) has accesses to your system that it probably shouldn't.

    • @DisturbedLick
      @DisturbedLick 4 ปีที่แล้ว +149

      @@lucassatie Uh, he said multiple times in the video they're usually just scanning a list of known viruses, not looking at permissions a program has. So, that's not how they work at all.

    When I bought my first laptop, it came with a 1 year licence of McAfee. Being new to the pc enthousiasm, I left if for a year, everything was great! Until a year and one day. The day that my licence expired, McAfee started hugginh 99% of my CPU, nringing my system to a halt! And the worst part? Whenever I started task manager, it would stop hugging to not be seen. Meanwhile, I was constantly being harrassed by McAfee popups saying that I was no longer protected or that my system had been infected, URGING me to renew for another year. I managed to find the culprit by first sorting the processes by CPU usage, most first, closing task manager, wait for my system to slow down, starting shadow play to record the screen then fire up task manager. By rewatching the fotage in slowmo, I saw McAfee at 99% for about a second before it stopped. Immediatly uninstalled it.

      Same, my laptop came with McAfee, had it for about a year (it was normally a year but the countdown had started before I bought the laptop, but I didn't care). After the almost one year, I uninstalled it right away. TBH I am happy with Windows Defender, so far I haven't had any issues with anything, no viruses, no stupid notifications nothing, and no hits on the performance.

    Dude this video is exactly what I was looking for.
    I have been feeling for a while now, like windows defender slows down basic tasks, performance benchmarks aside. I’m just glad to know someone tested it so I know I’m not crazy.
    I feel like enabling real time protection, plus the reputation based app protection settings, slows down everything a ton. I mean, when I click, I expect to see something happen on screen relatively quick. Instead, I have a pc that I consider to be quite good, ans I sit and wait ten seconds before anything pops up on screen after I open an application.
    With 64Gb of RAM, 9% memory usage approximately during these times, m.2 NVMe drive, minimal CPU usage, low temps; left me thinking ‘I know my pc is not being bottlenecked or throttling, so what is it doing between the time that I click, and the time that I see results on screen’
    I was looking in reputation based protection, and there is a feature which came enabled, that scans windows apps from windows store to see if they’re doing anything “bad”. Another feature that scans ‘non windows store’ apps, another feature that scans ‘bad reputation’ apps; etc.
    I feel like whether you are starting a program, transferring a file, downloading and unzipping, that the AV software is scanning literally every action that happens, looking for something wrong; if you have all those protections enabled.
    At the same time, as soon as you start disabling that stuff, I feel like windows realizes something’s not turned on, and fudges speeds even more.
    Just give me an OS that makes the dang computer compute, and don’t force all this extra BS on me.
    Anyway, I’m just happy to find this video, It was cool to see statistics on it, and normally when I go searching for answers, I only find half explanations, or the basic BS that everyone else seems to post. I really like this channel.
    Love the video

    Fun fact: according to the most reputed antivirus testing site avtest, windows defender is realistically all you'll ever need.
    I tend to agree as I've never had a 3rd party antivirus/antimalware software since 2007 and I've never had my PC infected. I do live more dangerously than most others (if you know what i mean) but still defender seems to work just fine.

    • @driverdis3488
      @driverdis3488 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Yep, once Windows 10 came out Windows Defender became fine for people, especially the general public. I work retail and the first thing I tell customers when they come in to purchase antivirus is to uninstall their current antivirus and Windows Defender will protect them for free.
      I am shocked by how many people don’t even know Windows has free AntiVirus as they have always purchased computers from stores with preinstalled Norton or McAfee and always assumed they had to keep renewing it.
      I am sure most people disregard what I have to say since I am a retail worker but whatever, at least someone will listen and if not they can still buy their AV software in store (for now, until everything ends up all digital)
      I personally use Windows Defender, and for files I really don’t know anything about I will run them thorough virustotal for some additional AV perspectives on a file.

      @rainmaker6217 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It really depends a lot. Defender/security is usually plenty for most people, but I have had atempts that were more sophisticated on my computer and defender does nothing against that. I used to have a subscription for Bitdefender, but due to various reasons I really couldn't use that any more as it both wasn't secure enough and didn't allow me the range of controll that I wanted. These days I use Emsisoft, and have mostly great experiences with that. I do understand that not everyone else gets affected by attacks as frequently as I do however (I do get exposed partly due to my interests, partly due to my job and partly just becasue of my stupid curiosity).

But when they get a new pc and the antivirus gets installed its fine. About 3-6 months later after they have installed a bunch of shit and filled a decent portion of the drive, shit is slowed down massively, and thats after i kill off all the shit that start on boot and restart. That was a great video as usual, but how about a 2022 update with a LTT recommendation? Kaspersky has been banned this year by many countries being a security risk and not so popular options of the past like McAffee and Norton may be a viable solution in 2022. Interested to hear LTT's view on this.

    Should have done crystal disk mark tests as I notice a drop in responsiveness of windows in general with an antivirus. Im assuming it does still increase access latency globally even if the file was opened before as it has to check that database. Things definitly do open much slower the first time though, although some of this can be attributed to it being in the RAM file cache after the first time.
