With proper care and maintenance without too many high power pulls, maybe. If he could fit a Mercades OM606 in there then that would easily double... however, they're not small blocks, so the chances of getting one into Phil are simlar to putting a house into a space the size of a single electron.

That exhaust system is NOT that restrictive. The one that will need to snake under the car and be noise restricted will be. I love how the engine 'seller' keeps saying "oh but this bit is worth this much more horsepower" but then we see 40hp less than expected.

Actually, it is - note the bore is under 2" and has serious non mandrel bends in it - as the tuner (Matt from the video) I can assure you we see 250-260 on the rolling when using a proper exhaust system with the AJ30 and these plenums...

Ye they said it revs at 8000-8500 rpm too but in the video it seemed to be peaking at around 6800 🤔

People are so out of touch with reality, 230bhp at least without tuning in a car that weighs less than a tonne. Thats way more bhp per ton than an ep3 at around 170bhp per tonne is also about the same bhp/tonne as an e46 m3. I think an mx5 with m3 performance would be epic
Literally the only saving grace in your statement is the weight of the car, which says everything about this "engine swap". 230 hp out of a DOHC V6 is weaksause every time, but I guess if you put it in a gokart it would be gods gift to motorsports...
On our pot-holed, traffic jammed, bicycle infested roads in the UK, 230bhp is more then adequate in a car this light. CC said it "add lightness".
@@BigMac2222 230hp is absolutely weak as hell, esp for a v6. A Nissan Quest from 2004 made 10 more horsepower, and a modern day town and country would gap the shit out of this Miata on the highway
@@fry.master the thing I don't get is this engine in the S type with catalytic converters etc makes 240bhp standard. Ok so maybe their dyno exhaust robs 20bhp. That's still really not that special.
I'm doing this engine swap on an 80's TVR and was considering their manifolds due to space constraints, but these results make me think they aren't well optimised at all.
The 3.7L v6 cyclone makes 300hp at the crank stock, just as much work fitting it in but way more power and aftermarket support.
You are playing well sir... As long as you keep it NA it will be glorious. 220 to 270hp are the perfect hp for a car like this without making it too much of a handfull. I mean it is really light and small, more than those figures and it would be all over the place as soon as you touched the throttle

It might be mentioning for your American / Australian viewers that the Jag AJ30 (Ford Duratec 30) is found in the Mazda Tribute / Ford Escape. Of which there were hundreds of thousands made and easy to get ahold of. Slightly lower HP output though at 200hp.

I have the same engine in my kit car. It has taken years of Trackday thrashing and is still working well.
They are so cheap to buy so you can’t beat them for the money.
I had completely forgotten that loads of stuff from Jaguar back in the early to mid 2000's was Ford, and the Ford Duratec V6, particularly the 2.5L and 3L variants, are absolute gems. If you can get higher-spec accessories that can handle the RPMs, their theoretical redline limit is 8,700 RPM, which is just absolutely insane for an engine of that displacement. You can also buy SVT tuned or even some Cosworth tuned components for them. Absolute banger of an engine and a stellar choice for such a small car.

Having had a v6 3.2, I can categorically say, it felt gutless. My T5 would slaughter it.
He is working with rocketeer who make a kit for this engine to fit in a Miata. Also he is putting this specific engine in it because he likes it.
That's a really good engine, and lightweight. that one comes in the Mazda Tribute, and in my Ford Escape, but with regular heads. Plenty power in all rpm band. Only little troubles with cop-coils, PCV w/ hose & vacuum leaks in old cracked intake mainfold seals. Perfect for Phill!

I admire the choice of engine, but when you drop a V6 into a car, why not use an Alfa Romeo Busso? They can make big power, are easy to work on, and are bulletproof. Also, they are very pretty to look at.
Duratec Ford v6s (essentially this engine but from ford) are good aswell, more Duratecs about than busso's aswell.
But the Busso is a transverse engine, not a longitudinal one. I guess it would be more difficult to align the mounting points.
Cooper Pinter Alfa 75 and GTV6 had longitudinal engines. But I hear what you are saying.
The duratec was used in transverse applications as well

Literally my feelings on this engine as well. For a DOHC this was pathetic, A toyota 3.5 bone ass stock will put out 300, add all the carbon fiber and custom ECM tune with a few other minor bolt-ons could see 350 every day of the week. Why in the world would anyone choose this V6 for a swap... Even KIA V6 puts out more stock....

all im seeing in the comments is people he should have Honda swapped, Busso V6 swapped or LS. - this is the UK, Alfa V6s never sold well here, LSs are rare here and a honda swap is possible, but the sound of the duratec beats any honda, and to the people complaining about "only 232hp", an MX-5 weighs the same as a bag of crisps so it would still be fast
Great job looks brilliant with the carbon intakes, but if you wanted british and noise should've used a KV6.
KV6 is not an upgrade from a turbo'd MX5 when it comes to reliability... KV6 are rubbish engines

Turbos remove from the driver experience in cases like this, reduced engine response, muted sound, and wider powerband. If you have a choice to have a turbo car or na car with the same or similar hp, NA is always the better option

Jesse Kaden the physical size would be bigger, you'd need a more powerful clutch transmission and maybe a better diff too. The engine wouldn't fit without choping up the engine bay. And the weight. It would be heavy and ruin it's weight balence. That doesn't matter too much but then you got. Price.

The Chevy LFX V6 makes a lot more power and revs higher. It is the V6 in the Camaro if it doesn't have a V8

Unfortunately the "jag engine" isn't actually an engine made by Jaguar.
It's an engine made by Ford.
Second of all, why would someone want 560 HP in a Mazda Miata, 230 sounds enough.
My point was the price is crazy considering i can get a brand new warranted high end racing engine with all the best parts for the same price. I would have used a Buick 3.8L it makes 205hp but if you add aluminum heads/headers it will make 260hp or 300hp @ 7,800rpm with a cam, with aluminum heads it only weighs 335lbs and is tiny because its not DOHC and a new long block is only like $1,000 all the upgrades would put it at $3,000 +$1000 for a Tremec Borg Warner T5 and a few brackets and mounts can be fabbed up for a few hundred. SO for $4,200 you''d get more power, proven racing track record with 3.8L's known for pushing 600hp since the 1980's and one of the most reliable engines ever made
I agree all this effort for 236 CRANK HP is insane should have gone to all the companies putting v8's in them then he'd have an NA ls in there that will be more reliable and make double the power I just don't get it

We haven't left the EU yet and importing an engine from outside the EU won't matter whether we are in or not.

The engine is blown and needs a rebuild which means you have to rebalance the entire rotating assembly. Not cost effective as it’ll cost more than getting a new engine.

Stefan Winter crank balancing can cost upwards of $2500. For my truck it cost me $12,295 because it’s an old international diesel.
I helped fit the duratec 3.0 v6 to a lotus esprit. With a fettled mondeo v6 inlet manifold, standard exhaust manifolds and a megasquirt ECU , it made 240bhp on the dyno.

Only 230 Horsepower? No port and polish, larger valves, or bigger cams? Its basically a stock engine with headers, an aftermarket intake manifold and cone filters, the same thing that ricers run?

Ricers don't run Jaguar V6s, ricers don't have 230 HP.
Also the Miata weighs basically nothing so 230 HP sounds fine to me.
I would recommend for you to stop thinking every car is a horsepower number.
Theyre cosmetic modifications.
They're not, they can support the air inflow for a larger and more complex intake in the future.
If you don't understand that then get a 90 HP Nissan Micra or a bicycle.
The engine needs camshafts. A 4 door luxury car is primarily built to be smooth, camshafts change the characteristics of the engine more so than any other component except perhaps the ECU. Like I said, cylinder head work and camshafts will give you way more bang for your buck than intake manifold and headers.
They literally called it the "Engine Dress Kit" in the video, it costs 6000 british pounds. Thats 2 or 3 times the cost of what I'm advocating.

As I said, the Mazda Miata MX-5 has around 130 HP from stock, is RWD and weighs practically nothing.

A cool project! In the States the V6 that gets swapped into the Miata is usually a GM LFX out of the v6 Camaro. Same basic formula, smooth and decently high revving while making 300hp in a lightweight package.
This kit is amazing u can see how much effort and research went into it
Yeah Phil is back!!! I expected a well larger power out put than 232HP though. I'd get the exhaust done then if you feel it's too restrictive. I don't think anyone wants to see Phil stay as a NA engine either. He needs a supercharger. 😃

Please do a follow up on this car. I've been contemplating the LS swap but the overall costs are becoming astronomical. If the stock transmission and rear axle can handle the V6, it would save quite a bit of money. Of course, the V8 horsepower would be an incredible adrenaline booster, but the V6 doubles the power of the stock 1.6 and seems like a perfect compromise.
