The conflict between Inarius and Lilith was inevitable from the beginning. And it's conclusion just as inevitable. While it is true that both were united in seeking an escape from the Eternal Conflict, they were not united in WHY they sought that escape. Inarius sought an escape from a conflict he was weary of. Essentially seeking to abandon his post and his brethren and hide from everyone. Lilith sought to abandon a conflict locked in an eternal stasis she found pointless. She wasn't weary of the conflict. She was frustrated by it. When their children came about, the two reactions are also telling. Both parents saw the potential in their new children to be a disruption and eventual end to the Eternal Conflict. Lilith was enamored by her children, her chaotic nature thrilled at the idea of finally breaking the stasis, and possibly conquering both sides, establishing a new order and rulers of Creation. Inarius was horrified by his children, his order-bound nature terrified at the idea of a disruptive force upsetting the stasis of the current status-quo. These differing views were also reflected in the reactions of the two sides when they became aware of Sanctuary. The Demons wanted to corrupt and conquer Humanity to add their power to their own. The Angels sought to eliminate Humanity as an unacceptable challenge to their own power and place in the cosmos. I think it's inevitable lore-wise that Humanity will eventually have to fulfill Lilith's desire, to wage war on Angel and Demon alike--if for no other reason than their own survival. Malthael proved that Angels are no ally to Humanity.
The deeper you look into this story, the dumber it gets. How does an "order bound" angel rebel in the first place? I mean I guess Inarius would have a reaction to his... children... like that because he didn't know what was going to come of it from the start... but do the Angels and Demons not even know their origin in this? Man kind is like a microcosm of that original entity that split to form the Angels and Demons in the first place. If anything they'd be more whole than either side. How do demons and angels even reproduce? Angels get formed in the heavens at the arch or something, and I don't even understand where Lilith came from, to be called Mephisto's daughter... who is her mother? Why does the mankind in this story, reproduce the way we do in the real world, if their angel and demon ancestors did not. I hate when people make the comparisons between this and Christianity though, because this is a made up story in a made up world, and like everyone in the world, who hates God, but wants to make a story about good and evil... they hit the same wall. Who decides what good and evil is, in this story? Where does it all come from? They take ideas from a variety of philosophies and myths that don't mesh, and then try to glue them together.

Everything they tell us is not bound to real comparisons or have to make sense. It doesn't matter HOW exactly Lilith got "born" as the daughter of "Hatred", she is describes as his daughter... the end. For example: Sauron put "his cruelty, his malice, and his will to dominate all life" into a ring... that's not possible if you compare it to the real world, but Tolkien wrote that he did and so you have to accept it as the made up story it is. "Death of the Author" could help to understand more of it.

Both sides have this baked into their core nature, are diametrically opposed to the other. Yes, the Angel/Demon aesthetics are sourced from the Judeo-Christian Angels/Demons tradition, because its what most of the player-base of the original Diablo is most familiar with. But these Angels are a power unto themselves, not servants of a higher power. And the Demons are not rebels against heaven, they are an independent active force in opposition to it from the founding. 'Good' in this game is a matter of perspective, and is primarily slanted by the writers as 'best for humanity's survival' in the current narrative. It's left rather ambiguous as to whether the player's fight against Lilith and uneasy alliance with Inarius is actually 'good' or not. Heck, we're never really given a decent reason why the player is invested in this fight at all. The story is actually somewhat nihilistic, that every fight the player has only succeeds in creating more problems than are resolved, resulting in less peace in the world than when the player started their journey.

I gotta say the aesthetic of the game is less judeo-christian and more Renaissance art style. Angels description in scripture is never like this and demons are never described with physical form or shape. The aesthetic comes from inspiration in art, like Dantes Inferno. Lastly, Inarius didn't just abandon his post, which is an act of rebellion, but he stole the world stone and conspired with the enemy... these seem to me to be acts against their perceived order. As a Christian myself, thank you for properly showing the most important and critical differences between Christianity (or at least what Christianity is intended to be, whether Catholic, Orthodox, or Protestant) to the militant zealotry of the Cathedral of light. Im a huge fan of the diablo universe and it has a rich lore that creates its own mythos to the most ancient of stories, a mythology far older than Christianity or Judaism, though most of the western world would clearly recognize the many names and titles from Christian angelology and demonology). Playing the game as a Christian, and knowing some of my more narrow-minded Christian peers’ apprehension about the game, i do see the valid its in their concern that, because of the parallels between the Cathedral of Light and the Church, that this can be used as a plot by the enemy to turn people away from the (real world) Faith by conflating it with the (in game) faith; thus i appreciate this nuanced approach and creating proper distinctions while expounding on your points. A father burning his children also coincidentally references Mephisto orchestrating Lilith's downfall as part of his plan to escape Hell in the soulstone. A mother molding a new age from the ashes could also be Neyrelle after taking Mephisto's soulstone and falling to his influence. The prophecy is still unfolding.

They will probably say that the prophesy came true, Inarius went to heaven, we defeated Lilith and we were blessed by the cathedral so they will probably twist it that we( blessed now part of the cathedral ) won. cool video but I think you missed that Inarius reflects Lucifer more than anyone else. His fall and hatred for man. Lucifer and Lilith being together and birthing monsters+ half angelic creatures called Nephilim so on and so forth.

I really like Diablo the lore but i find it heartbreaking that there really isn’t any good to be found. The only truly sympathetic member of the angiris council Auriel is ambivalent at best, Tyrael is gone. Heaven is annihilation biased and Hell has subjugation on its checklist. Even servants of balance like Tragoul are missing. I just hate the lack of hope
Yeah, it could use some lightheartedness despite all the darkness but some people seem to think Diablo stopped being dark in D3. Which is an absurd claim(And before people chime in I don't hate D4).
I like the moral ambiguity of both sides. The angels are capable of and have committed atrocities while the demons or Lilith are capable of love and compassion. I think she did want to save us but went about it in a way that would make us see her as the big threat. Meanwhile her father was imo pulling the strings the whole time. I hope to get more lore soon

We were quite literally at the footsteps into the "heart of hatred" itself when a literally beam pierced the entire realm There are multiple interpretations of Inarius' death being this line Never has the soulstone(a piece of the worldstone so affiliated to neither light or dark) being compared to a spear of light Rathmas prophecy was quite literally just about his death and his parents deaths
What makes Diablo's lore good is that it takes the Christian idea of heaven and hell along with Christianity's "internal battle over sin" and turns it into an actual battle between heaven and hell and put mankind (the player) right at the heart of the story as the hero changing the course of the war. Of course, the characters in the story are very twisted versions of anything in Christianity because by removing the internal struggle over sin they had to create an external struggle where it's not always so clear who the good guys and the bad guys are.
Well, it seems that he is permanently dead now. High Heavens is up in flames and became a new outpost of hell. And Lilith did not convert him into a demon after pulling off his wings, she left him to bleed out and rot. Because of this Inarius cannot spawn back into heaven with his wings, and he has already bled out to be revived as a demon. Demons and Angel in Diablo would can be killed if they are mortally wounded by an immortal being.
@@Unchainedful Even if Heaven wasn't closed off, once Inarius died, he as we know him is dead. His light would flow back to the crystal arch and a new angel would be reborn in his place.

I've got a small question for the end of Diablo 3. After our Nephalim killed Malthael, the Soulstone was destroyed. But are the Prime and Lesser Evils now free again or did our Nephalim absorbed them at the end?

I have an opinion on Rathma's Prophecy. Spoilers ahead if you Click the SHOW MORE for this post, only click if you have FINISHED the campaign as my interpretation will spoil many things if you continue. Do not click "Show More" to this post if you do not want spoilers. "I saw my corpse and from my mouth crawled hatred." -We know he saw the prophecy and it involved his corpse... the hatred crawling from his mouth, in speech or literally is yet unclear to me. You'll see from the following most of this "prophecy" is not symbolic at all. "A Father burned his children on a pyre." -Obviously referring to the returned Inarius burning "heretics" on a literal pyre. He his considered the father of Sanctuary but he seems to be the only actual father of Rathma. "And a Mother molded a new age from the ashes" -Obviously Lilith. It doesn't say she completed or succeeded in the work. "I saw the weak made strong." -NyxVellum thinks it refers to the Wander only. It seems out of order since the next line was happening already... "A pack of lambs feasting on wolves" -The congregants of the "Church of Light" turning on their "shepherds." "Tears of Blood rained on a desert jewel" -You know this part from the campaign. It wasn't symbolic. "The way to Hell was torn asunder," Obvious from the campaign. Not symbolic. "Then came a spear of light piercing hatreds heart" -I actually thought this was Lilith piercing Inarius' heart with his own spear. Because Inarius at this point is more filled with hate than even Lilith. Hatred for her, his creation, what's been done to him over the millennia... But that would require good writing, and actual understanding of the concepts Blizzard is trying to writing about. Based on the rest of this "prophecy," the writers aren't thinking deeper than surface level and literal, so it's almost certainly the Soul Stone claiming Mephisto, even though it didn't pierce his heart, if he even has one. "And he who was bound in chains was set free" -Angels, like demons in this lore, don't die. The reform in the heavens at that archway according to D3. So I was initially thinking Inarius, by finally being killed his own spear through the heart... (unlike him, Lilith didn't miss), would be free to reform in the Heavens where he has been trying to get this whole time. But again, Blizzard writers, being Blizzard writers, most likely meant Mephisto is going to escape the stone.
I really hope she is made into Diablo’s version of Torquemada - a human antagonist - heading a church that commits genocide on heretics and non-believers across Sanctuary. She should be like Lazarus in D1, however the polar opposite. Whereas Lazarus blatantly turns evil and goes to the dark side sacrificing Tristam’s kids to Diablo - Prava is still convinced that she is working on behalf of the Light, and is in for a very rude awakening when Inarius returns!

So like is Inarius dead dead? Or did the angels, like the prime evil just reform after they've died? I don't recall Inarius being an arch angel. Not even sure if they reform or not. Either way I think the ending was bad. Having us kill both Inarius and Lilith in the same game just feels stupid. This insistency by blizzard to keep the status que is also shitty as well. Just feels like a desperate way to make room for a diablo 5

That would at least show tolerance and in some cases they procreated as well to make more of the nephalem.Her statement about wanting free will and to make our own choices while she steps back into the shadows has a tempting appeal but the way it’s done is awful for sure. Also the heavens ur right are awful. They had malthiel and what’s his face become death and wrath and wanted to wipe out humanity from the start. Imo Lilith is the slightly lesser of the two evils. Better then extinction

I feel like it was Lilith stabbing Inarius, all that time being tortured in hell changed him, and he was now convinced “sanctuary is an abomination” his heart was full of hatred. 🤷🏻♂️
We were quite literally at the footsteps into the "heart of hatred" itself when a literally beam pierced the entire realm
There are multiple interpretations of Inarius' death being this line
Never has the soulstone(a piece of the worldstone so affiliated to neither light or dark) being compared to a spear of light
Rathmas prophecy was quite literally just about his death and his parents deaths
What makes Diablo's lore good is that it takes the Christian idea of heaven and hell along with Christianity's "internal battle over sin" and turns it into an actual battle between heaven and hell and put mankind (the player) right at the heart of the story as the hero changing the course of the war.
Of course, the characters in the story are very twisted versions of anything in Christianity because by removing the internal struggle over sin they had to create an external struggle where it's not always so clear who the good guys and the bad guys are.
I hope we see Inarius again I feel like he's a really interesting character that kinda just got side lined which is a shame.
In his current state, he is a piece of shit. But if killing him does him some good, maybe there is hope for him.
Well, it seems that he is permanently dead now. High Heavens is up in flames and became a new outpost of hell. And Lilith did not convert him into a demon after pulling off his wings, she left him to bleed out and rot. Because of this Inarius cannot spawn back into heaven with his wings, and he has already bled out to be revived as a demon. Demons and Angel in Diablo would can be killed if they are mortally wounded by an immortal being.
@@Unchainedful Even if Heaven wasn't closed off, once Inarius died, he as we know him is dead. His light would flow back to the crystal arch and a new angel would be reborn in his place.

They weren't absorbed. Malthael briefly had them but then they scattered once we killed him. But the Primes / Lessers take a bit before they reform

I have an opinion on Rathma's Prophecy. Spoilers ahead if you Click the SHOW MORE for this post, only click if you have FINISHED the campaign as my interpretation will spoil many things if you continue. Do not click "Show More" to this post if you do not want spoilers.
"I saw my corpse and from my mouth crawled hatred."
-We know he saw the prophecy and it involved his corpse... the hatred crawling from his mouth, in speech or literally is yet unclear to me. You'll see from the following most of this "prophecy" is not symbolic at all.
"A Father burned his children on a pyre."
-Obviously referring to the returned Inarius burning "heretics" on a literal pyre. He his considered the father of Sanctuary but he seems to be the only actual father of Rathma.
"And a Mother molded a new age from the ashes"
-Obviously Lilith. It doesn't say she completed or succeeded in the work.
"I saw the weak made strong."
-NyxVellum thinks it refers to the Wander only. It seems out of order since the next line was happening already...
"A pack of lambs feasting on wolves"
-The congregants of the "Church of Light" turning on their "shepherds."
"Tears of Blood rained on a desert jewel"
-You know this part from the campaign. It wasn't symbolic.
"The way to Hell was torn asunder,"
Obvious from the campaign. Not symbolic.
"Then came a spear of light piercing hatreds heart"
-I actually thought this was Lilith piercing Inarius' heart with his own spear. Because Inarius at this point is more filled with hate than even Lilith. Hatred for her, his creation, what's been done to him over the millennia... But that would require good writing, and actual understanding of the concepts Blizzard is trying to writing about. Based on the rest of this "prophecy," the writers aren't thinking deeper than surface level and literal, so it's almost certainly the Soul Stone claiming Mephisto, even though it didn't pierce his heart, if he even has one.
"And he who was bound in chains was set free"
-Angels, like demons in this lore, don't die. The reform in the heavens at that archway according to D3. So I was initially thinking Inarius, by finally being killed his own spear through the heart... (unlike him, Lilith didn't miss), would be free to reform in the Heavens where he has been trying to get this whole time. But again, Blizzard writers, being Blizzard writers, most likely meant Mephisto is going to escape the stone.

I really hope she is made into Diablo’s version of Torquemada - a human antagonist - heading a church that commits genocide on heretics and non-believers across Sanctuary.
She should be like Lazarus in D1, however the polar opposite. Whereas Lazarus blatantly turns evil and goes to the dark side sacrificing Tristam’s kids to Diablo - Prava is still convinced that she is working on behalf of the Light, and is in for a very rude awakening when Inarius returns!

Look up Cardinal Richelieu if you want to see a priest in armor. During Medieval and early modern period within European history, bishops and archbishops played a more political role than they do today.

Don't know. But he was high up there, being Tyrael's mentor and advisor. He was able to best Asmodan with ease, so its safe to say he can take on a Prime Evil.

Either way I think the ending was bad. Having us kill both Inarius and Lilith in the same game just feels stupid. This insistency by blizzard to keep the status que is also shitty as well. Just feels like a desperate way to make room for a diablo 5
