      :4:10 min: Tony's mob family might not take care of Carmela but you forget, Tony's lawyer has access to his overseas money and instructions in how to distribute it to Carmela. Plus fending for herself won't be difficult. The F.B.I. isn't able to convict him and therefore take his assets, and they have plenty of those~! The house is even in her name as she mentions in the show; there is the boat, the cars, the property she just bought where she stayed when they were hiding out earlier in the episode; there is his social security from all the legit businesses and let us not overlook her jewelry, furniture and household items. Please~!

    One small detail I always noticed but have never seen mentioned is This Magic Moment by The Drifters being visible on the jukebox just before Tony selects Journey - Don't Stop Believing. This was the song played at the end of 6x13, Sopranos Home Movies. The same episode Bobby comes out with the famous (and important) "You probably don't even hear it when it happens, right?" line.

      Oh, wow. That has so many levels. It links the episode where Bobby says that phrase to this one, but it links to the song as well, because he won't be hearing it when it happens. I hadn't noticed this. Very cool insight.

    There were so many clues that he died in this scene, but the one part that kind of throws me is where he enters the diner and it looks like you’re seeing his POV and he’s already seated in the diner. So this leads me to believe this is supposed to be like his hell that Chris described where he sees himself getting whacked over and over every night. But the clues that he is dead are everywhere from the very first scene where you see Tony asleep face up on a pillow and organ music is playing… looks like a casket and sounds like a funeral parlor, until it turns to a rock n roll song and he wakes up. Everything in the diner is 3’s and this would be his third killing attempt. Also Meadow “saved” him twice in the series, but she’s running late because it took her 3 times to get the parking right (another third time) and she acts like she is really in a hurry even though this is just a casual dinner. She would’ve been seated right where the gunman shot him from and could’ve potentially saved him, but she was too late.

    Ok, random trivia: I worked at a suburban Philly newspaper when this episode aired, and the “Member’s Only” guy worked at a local pizza shop in Penndel, Pa. he wasn’t an actor, he was found by a casting agent (or someone) and entered TV history. We interviewed the guy a few times, and he had no idea if he was supposed to be the shooter or not. Pretty random.

      Was it 3 o'clock ? That is a good insight though. I never really caught that. The have a lot of tidbits in the dialogue and scenes that point to things that happened in the past or may happen in the future. I got a kick out of the idea that Russ Fegoli is Paulie Gualitari s father. He talks to Tony about his "Aunt" in the convent dying. He mentions some G.I named Russ got her pregnant. Tony does not even show any concern or think back that the snooty Dr. Fegoli could be Paulie's Father.

      To be honest, I believe that Tony's fate would worse if actually didn't get shot in the last scene. Instead, he would continually have to look behind his shoulder even more than usual just because of all mayhem that happened in the second half of season 6. Like you said, sooner or later it would catch up to him. I actually believe he survived that last scene just because I believe thats a worst ending than dying without realizing it.

  • @MrTomlette
    @MrTomlette 3 ปีที่แล้ว +98

    Yep. Not only that, season six (a & b) is filled with either death imagery or hints as to how Tony is not as capable anymore. There's the three bells aspect; in Soprano Home movies, two bells ring, right after Tony loses his fight with Bobby (proving he's getting weaker, and even the excuse he mentions, a sucker punch, proves that he's not as fast to react anymore). He doesn't catch the fish jumping out of the water; Carmella sees it.
    Season 6a is full of people getting a taste of the life they wanted, only to get it taken away from them: Johnny Sack at the wedding, Chris in LA, Vito living as a gay man. Carmela has her own version of the coma dream, she talks as to how being in Paris is like being in a place where nobody knows who she is, just like Tony, in the coma, loses his identity, etc.
    At the same time, you see all the potential endings for someone like Tony with the other characters: dead or in prison, mainly, but it's still interesting that the show goes out of its way to show the fall of Johnny Sack, for example. And of course, and most blatantly, you literally know what is going to happen to him when he dies because you've already seen it in the coma episodes.

    • @AvatarRoku999
      @AvatarRoku999 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    • @MrTomlette
      @MrTomlette 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@AvatarRoku999 My point being that the show keeps showing him getting caught off guard. The first episode of the sixth season he gets shot, then in Sopranos Home Movies he gets beat up by Bobby of all people, even in the finale you see that very weird scene with the water bottles, that seems to be there to reinforce the image of him not noticing what he has around, as foreshadowing for the moment when he won't be able to react to the Member's Only guy. It's not about whether Tony is realistically able to do anything or not, in the first season he was gonna get shot by two guys and he was able to react, my point is that the show itself keeps telling stories where he always fails, because they are clues, thematically, of what's happening in the finale.

    One thing that stuck out to me: tony gets onion rings for the table, then there is a close up shot of Carmela eating one, then of AJ eating one.
    They are shown eating the rings in a very deliberate manner, and they both eat them whole, as one would a communion wafer.
    Someone in another comment pointed out that in this scene tonys family had finally accepted the mafia lifestyle. Carmela doesnt react to Carlo testifying, AJ accepted a job he got through mob connections, Meadow is working to become a criminal defense lawyer.
    In that scene they are taking the communion of Tonys lifestyle. Accepting it as catholics accept the body of christ for his sacrifices.

The shirt he's wearing when Junior shoots him is a polo/golf shirt with a light grey collar with black piping and a thin black stripe down the middle of the front; the shirt he's wearing in the series finale is a button up shirt with a black collar and a thick light grey stripe down the middle of the front.

    I think Tony is killed and Paulie eventually becomes boss of what is left of the New Jersey crew. Tony not killing Paulie on the boat proved to be a fatal mistake. Although Paulie had a love for Tony there were many instances where he displayed disloyalty I.e telling Johnny sack about the fat joke, trying to impress Carmine and not wanting to give Carmela any of the money from the drug bust. All of these things ultimately back fired. Paulie would have known that agreeing with New York to get rid of Tony would have been his last chance of being Boss and I think he took it. Remember what he said to Sil “You never know what the future holds my friend”.

      Lol... Paulie was too debile in order to pull off a slick move like that... At no point during the show did Paulie show that type of determination & leadership qualities, which are attributes that characterize a Boss... Tony had them before he was Boss.... When Bobby showed signs of those attributes, Tony started to hand more responsibility to him.... Paulie was like a secretary - always dependent on guys with those Attributes (Tony, Johnny Sac, Carmine, even Silvio and Vito in the end).... Or he envied guys with those attributes (Ralphie, Bobby)....
      Bosses like Tony & Johnny Sac
      were fully aware of that, that's why Johnny played Paulie the whole time... And Tony always favored other guys, that's why Paulie never got to lead the Aprille crew - Richie, Gigi, Ralphie, Vito all came before him.

    Thank you for this. I originally opined that the final episode was a great one, but I long held the view that it was a cop out for failing to come to grips with the essential conflict of the show - Tony the family man vs Tony the “family” man.
    A review of the show itself has led me to a change of heart, mostly anyways.
    Not only the aftermath of the junior shooting, but also the fates of Johnny sack and leotardo, explored the many possible paths for the soprano clan.
    And in the end, Tony didn’t make the choice between his families, though it was probably clear he should have. So by wanting to have his cake and eat it, too, he consigned both families to perhaps their worst fates.
    Outstanding show. Worthy of re-watching and continued discussion.

      @katkit4281 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Will Muny In my opinion I think the problem is the ending made it where you had to think to figure out if he was killed instead they of just showing it. You don't need to see Tony's death to know his fate. In "Logan" we didn't have to see the Charles accidentally kill the Xmen when he had a seizure or even be told it directly to understand what happened. That is the problem. The general public often has stuff spoonfed. Studios underestimate the audience's overall intelligence. This is why in "The Ring" a Japanese horror movie the title's meaning had to be changed when remade in America. The studio actually thought Americans would not understand the title's metaphorical meaning so they changed it to the title simply referring to the ring of light she saw while down in the well.

After they dump the body they have a conversation about what they think happens when you get wacked with a bullet to the back of the head, if you will hear it our not. They say you would not hear it and everything would just go black. There is also a bunch of symbolism in the final scene that the writers said was put there intentionally to explain more about his fate.

    I suspect Tony was clipped by someone in the Lupertazzi family, probably Butchie. They used Tony to clip Phil, which is a loose end that needed tying off. Clipping your own boss, while quite common, is a big break from the protocols of the mafia.....get Tony to whack Phil, then whack Tony and have a puppet boss installed (probably Paulie, he's ambitious and dumb) in Jersey. Then the glorified crew will effectively become exactly that and kick up to the new boss in NY.

But the thing that did it for me, was the fact that in the whole run of Sopranos, the episode ending music was always good. The ending of the show was pretty obvious once you start noticing the details and think about it a little. We see Tony walk in the restaurant and he’s starring at himself already sitting in the booth, which is reminiscent of a scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey. We hear the bell ring and see Tony look up to various people walking in till it’s his wife and son. His son walks in at the same time as a man in a members only jacket who looks back at Tony twice till he walks in the bathroom, which is also reminiscent of Tony’s favorite scene in The Godfather. We see Meadow trying to park her car delaying her meeting with her Dad. By the time she finally walks in and Tony looks up…..cut to black. Tony never got to see Meadow because he was shot dead. Likely this entire scene is Tony replaying his last moments trying to see his daughter. We’re given this hint at the beginning when we see Tony looking at himself. He’s already dead and I’m hell and his last moments are his torture because his life is now over and he’ll never get to see his beloved daughter again.

    I feel like the first episode of the season mirrors the last one. What I mean by that is that in most other shows big episodes usually end in like a cliffhanger or the biggest part of the episode. Like for example if a main character gets killed in an episode a lot of shows that character will get killed and then roll credits end of episode. But I always felt that sopranos rarely did that if someone got killed a lot of the time it was in the middle of the episode or in some cases like Christopher in the beginning. When Chris dies he dies in like the first 10 mins and then the rest of the episode is the aftermath is the rest of the episode like Paulies mother dying , their dual funerals and then tony going to Vegas and take mushrooms honestly I feel like most other shows that would have been like 3 episodes but the pacing in the sopranos is different yeah that would have been several episodes in an other show but in the sopranos did it in one and i didn’t feel rushed. ( side note I LOVE that episode) and they do that most of the time. But in the first episode uncle junior shoots Tony and thats where the episode ends. So in the finale I think it mirrors it by ending with the big event which is Tony’s death but we see it from his point of view which is just all of a sudden black.... but that’s just my opinion 🤷🏼‍♂️
