P & P are my choices. It's foreshadowed throughout the show with both characters. Never considered Butchie but you figure they must have had NY's blessing to carry out the hit.
All the clues you've mention adds up. Butch, Paulie, and Ralph Bunche. I especially liked the point you made about the dream sequence where Tony shoots Paulie, then the scene cuts to black. That foreboding statement made by Tony to Dr. Melfi, "There's two outcomes for a high profile guy like me, dead or in the can." The anxiety these mobsters live through on a daily basis. It's just too much to bear.
More importantly what happens to Ginny Sacks ?? Who is admonishing her for hidden candy bars? Or snuggling up to her Rubenesque warmth on the cold nights ?? RIP Denise Borino
That was absolutely brilliant. No one ever spoke to that observation. I had held that thought too. But let it go, thinking it was too big and too wild. Butch was unafraid and despised him. He orchestrated everything. I thought he gave up Phil too. With Pauly I agree it was a horrible vibe. I could not trust Tony after what I saw, did and knew. Pauly went above and beyond causing that tension over the joke. He and Tony were petty and shallow. They were the same coin. Mommy issues and all. I thought getting close to Tony by way of marriage was brilliant. Meadow was never innocent. She caused death and fighting. She was no angel. I still think they were all killed but her. That would be the best ending. AJ was useless as an aire. Carmela was just as evil as Tony in her wearing his rank. Never saw Rosalie do that. Thank you again. All these years. I believe Little Carmine instigated some of it. The keep your enemies close.
Another aspect is the loss of Sil means Tony looses the only person who could have alerted him to something was up with his own capos. Sil was also too invested in Tony and likely was seen by NY as unapproachable.
I also thought of another aspect. Sil was very critical of Paulie. Paulie likely told NY that Sil was trouble from the time he criticized him and saw him as in the way of Tony and their special friendship. Sil always reminded him that in the end he was bad at making money. The ironic thing is that Sil would have been the best to run Jersey even from a NY view. He saw things with a level head knew the crew and how to keep them in line and knew Tony’s problems were very much of his own making. It’s fate that NY incapacitated the one guy they needed untouched.
I forget but didn’t New York essentially want to dissolve the New Jersey family? Them going after ALL the leadership kinda indicates they don’t have the intention of restructuring the family, just absorbing whatever’s left. Plus after the headache that was Tony’s reign I could see them just not wanting to put up with the headache and just cut their losses.
Ya when he “just spoke to Phil he ain’t seeing nobody” he was really telling Carmine and Tony at the front doorstep while looking over at Ph Leotardo upstairs at the same time lol it’s an amazing talent to do that with just two sets of a eye lol
Whilst I originally believed this to be the most likely theory after I finished watching for the 1st time, I realise now that it could just as easily be a dozen other things. There's no doubt a really creepy and eerie supernatural vibe to the sopranos that I think is really overlooked when it comes to discussions of the show, and the prophecies foretold throughout the show (Chris' 3 o clock warning, Junior's 'these things come in threes' etc.) Personally, I believe that Tony's everpresent and increasing self indulgence sets these prophecies in stone. And its through this almost cosmic wisdom that anybody could have killed Tony. He became such a hated person that there are hundreds of suspects in his death. It really doesn't matter who killed him, just that they did. That being said, I do believe Patsy and Paulie selling out Tony to new york was a plausible explanation but personally, I prefer the idea that this plan never came to fruition. I like to think that whilst their scheme was set in motion, Tony was killed in a widely unrelated event most watchers probably forgot about around 20 episodes ago. To me, Eugene's brother-in-law or other relative shot and killed Tony as revenge for driving him to suicide. The hit that Eugene was sent on in the diner, matched with the shooters' Members Only jacket, most likely inherited to him after Gene's death are clear hints at this. Notice how the man looks nervous, unsure of what he's about to do and unfamiliar with the act. He wants justice but is contemplating his options. As he lines up with Tony, at his 3 o clock, where Meadow is supposed to sit, he pulls the trigger and kills Tony in front of his family. Just like Gene did by hanging himself in the family's garage. Tony would have died anyway, it's just a matter of when. Selling out Tony was not that hard for Patsy or Paulie to do, but I disagree entirely with the idea they would have been comfortable killing him in front of his entire family whom they've known for years.
But as the show has shown us multiple times, that “familial bond” is all bullshit. A prime example is from the sixth season when Paulie expressed contempt for having to pay dues to Carmela. “Fuck her!”….so I doubt that’d stop them…they’d probably look at it as the price of doing business
She didn’t do it. She wasn’t even mad with Tony; from her perspective, Tony didn’t do it intentionally, just business. And if she was, she would have died trying: and if she had family in the mob, why weren’t they in the funeral?
That's too reductive considering the amount of motive and foreshadowing for the other characters have who are used to killing people. The members only jacket is just a nod to an execution scene that wouldve been similar. Her being even able to buy the hit is pretty unbelievable as well. Whatever criminals are in the hitting business would know Tony isnt just some random target.
It was the hasidic homeboy with the assistance of meadow. "He's lucky I didn't punch his lights out." He waited.... and waited.... and in the end, he punched tony's ticket. Lights out.
No it was the Jewish son in law that Tony shook down. He hid in the tunnels of New York waiting for Tony to slip up. Tony was doneski as soon as he entered that kosher diner. He came up from under the floorboards and done him in.
I agree 100% with this theory, and may I add, the hitman looking and dressing like Eugene was just symbolism, he's not related to Eugene, he simply represents that Tony was not untouchable, and he could get killed by someone as low in the food chain as Eugene, someone Tony mistreated literally to death
Arguably Eugene wasn’t mistreated. Eugene voluntarily entered the mob life knowing once you get on you never leave. He reaped all the money and benefits. It would have been nice if he could have left because of an unexpected inheritance but Tony let’s him leave pretty soon all the guys have a reason to leave and he gets accused of playing favorites letting Eugene go but no one else go.
The reason the ending is so great, is nobody is wrong. If you want your theory to be true, it is, and you being right doesn’t mean anyone else is wrong. There’s enough clues sprinkled throughout to support multiple theories, without shutting down the possibility of other theories. I hated the ending at first, but over a decade later, i have come to understand why it’s so great. Also lost count of Soprano references in the video, even some Wire ones thrown in too, top video Cine!
So, should we have ended up with a generic ass boring ending like Boardwalk Empire then? Or maybe no ending at all, like Deadwood? Or an ending out of mercy to salvage the final season, like The Wire? No my friend, Sopranos ending is excellent.
Absolutely man, the awesome thing David Chase did was sprinkle moments of mystique thru the series and left some things up to interpretation, fed into the realistic, and yet supernatural, elements of the show
to me the brilliance of the ending is really that no matter which interpretation you subscribe to, ultimately it doesn’t matter. tony is living in a hell of his own making whether he dies in the restaurant or in some other dispute or of natural causes from his gluttonous lifestyle. he will continually alienate himself from anyone close in the exact way his mother did as long as he is alive.
Actually I’m convinced Paulie helped have Tony killed. The only reason it’s never been confirmed is out of respect for the late Tony Sirico who took the part of Paulie only after being promised that his character wouldn’t end up a turncoat or rat. The open-ending kept that promise but at the same time the on-screen hints are too overwhelming to not come to that one conclusion. Perhaps Tony Sirico didn’t even know himself or he did and he went along with it because it could never be proven 100%. Some people look at Paulie’s final scene out front Satriale’s as a little bit sad because he’s all by himself but I look at it as the result of cleverness and machinations of a career criminal and cutthroat survivor who did what he had to do to keep himself alive.
The boat scene when they are on the run may have been a massive catalyst for his move against Tony. Paulie must have thought his days were numbered after being grilled about that fat joke
If you notice the scene when Tony is at his house with Paulie he looks out the window and sees AJs girlfriend. He probably tipped off NY to follow her to find Tony since she would go visit AJ. With Tony Sil and Chris gone no one left to avenge Tony. AJ for sure isnt gonna do it
But Paulie already betrayed Tony when he told Jonny Sack about the joke. So him betraying Tony wouldn't have made Paulie a rat or a turncoat, because he was still operating within the mafia.

100% Paulie was in on it. The other aspects I sway back and forth on, but I just don't believe that Paulie wasn't trying to get rid of Tony at the end. Honestly the fact that he wasn't clipped by one of his own capos before the end is a borderline religious miracle
It's clear Paulie was interviewing for something. Remember the times him gabbing with Johnny. And there was a discussion he had with someone from NY towards the end, but i can't remember who.
Idk if Paulie is truly a part of the scheme and he considered a rat because of the mere fact that the creators of the show signed a deal with Tony Sirico agreeing that his character wouldn’t be a rat. Cutting ties with the family is a different scenario however..
But we the audience still can’t be sure this all happened. So the show implying his character is a rat with this theory doesn’t actually show PW being a rat on screen.
Butch certainly had motive and means to off Tony, and I think he DID, but I never viewed Paulie or Patsy to be that Machiavellian. Paulie wasn't even savvy enough to pick up on the fact that Johnny Sack was simply using him as a mole to get inside info on the Sopranos. I always thought it was one of three things that happened: 1) Tony gets hit right in front of his family. Reason: This is the way that Phil got hit 2) There's an attempt on Tony's life but Meadow surprises the hitman and she gets hit instead. Reason: This is what happened in Godfather 3 3) No one gets hit, they finish their dinner and Tony ends up flipping. Reason: The real life mob boss of the DeCavalcante family that Tony is based on, Billy Ocean, turns informant.
Tony killing Paulie in his dream with the screen going black is the biggest clue that Paulie sold him out. Tony's future and correct strategies has always been revealed to him in symbolism in his dreams
It's a hard one, because I love it. And ending with Tony's Death, makes sense (considering the last few episodes), but it doesn't matter, it was left to our imagination, which is the best, we have our own ending. Members only jackets, yet outdated, still were worn by idiots that were stuck in the 80's, people on occasion wore them still, and today, if found
Unlikely Patsy would send someone to whack Tony at the diner. Meadow could have easily been caught in between and killed. Whatever Patsy's issue with Tony was, I doubt he would put his son's fiancee, his own future daughter-in-law, needlessly at risk.
He’s a cold blooded guy I don’t think he cares about that. From his perspective, his son can just go marry someone else. His son marrying Meadow doesn’t benefit him in any way.

They might mess it up. They might be discovered. But as the scene cut...you get to invent your own ending. I guess that's the genius of it all! I like your idea they messed it up. I love speculating on different endings and how they'd play out. I love that the characters are so well developed.
Another clue would be the scene in which Petsy's wife looks under the plate to probably find out whether it is expensive goods. Because she was somehow informed by her husband that Tony would soon die.
This theory is the right one: Vito faked his own death. The man in the member's only jacket went to the bathroom 'cause it had a glory hole and he was meeting Vito there. When the door bell rang Vito came through the door. Tony had a panic attack and blacked out from the chock.

Tony had the head of one of the 5 families killed. even if Phil's own crew stood down, that is still a top offense in the mob. you need a nod and a OK from all 4 other bosses for a boss to get whacked. nobody would have given Tony that. technically, not that the show covered this, but anyone in NY could have killed Tony. maybe thats why nobody knows who the hell the members only guy was.
Except for the fact that NY agreed and a third, respected party, was present so this was not an act out of nowhere. The families don`t go to war without reason because when there is a war there a no earning and no-one is kicking up. In the end it is all about money and nothing else.
I always felt New York called the sit-down to get Tony's guard down. I dont believe with the amount of bullets coming at him when they hit Sil that Patsy was involved. Not everyone can be an expert marksmen like Bobby. 🎯 Why all the Jinny Sacrimoni cracks? Shes beautiful! Rubenesque!
Neither Paulie nor Patsy ever had any initiative in them. No real ambition. No doubt Butch and NY killed Tony as revenge plus that's what you get for killing a boss, but I see no reason to involve P&P.
IMO Little carmine was in on the tony hit with NY. You can see he was trying to warn and counsel tony the last time they talked but dramas and deaths seemed to be the norm with tony as acting boss of NJ. So, when you hear little carmine say "it didn't have to be this way..." at the final sitdown and then walk off with butchie after I knew they were gonna whack him. The truce would've been the perfect opportunity to whack him while his guard was down. The fact that the hit was in front of his family was payback for the hit on phil in front of his wife and grandkids.
I always thought Patsy he definitely had the motive and he could easily take over given the marriage between Meadow and his son but ultimately Tony had to go no matter what his crew and New York couldn't have him at the table any longer.
I think your "Members Only" explanation is the best. I don't think the other families would hold Tony at fault for Phil dying in a war Phil started, especially considering Tony's underboss is in a permanent coma and his brother-in-law and consigliere is dead as a result of that war. An official peace was made so I don't think it was New York.
Don't forget Tony was likely about to get arrested - again - because one of his top capos had agreed to testify. The risk of Tony cooperating would be enough for new York and what was left of his crew to re-evaluate. Tony was likely to be in jail awaiting trial, anyway, so why not get rid of him and eliminate the risk + get the soprano family working under new management. Or just absorb what was left.
That 3 o'clock thing had Paulie on the boat with tony on that time. In the last scene with paulie they switched places which represents paulie always finding a way to dodge a bullet & be the last man standing from the columbo days
I think the Members Only jacket is more symbolic meant to remind you of all the people Tony had wronged and therefore reinforce the idea that revenge is likely coming from some direction.

I always thought Paulie was involved. The show made a big deal of showing how their relationship deteriorated. Going from admiration and (mostly) loyalty to increasing resentment and undermining. Patsi is also a shoe-in as I don't think he ever forgave Tony for his brother and probably was aware that deep down Tony didn't trust him because of that. As for Butch, he personally wanted to kill Tony and it's likely New York would support him given Tony's state by end of the show

The reason the NY hit men would have fired at Patsy is because he might not have been involved in the conspiracy - yet. After Carlo's son was arrested and Tony confronted Patsy about his own son's potential involvement, Patsy would have been way more likely to go against Tony. Timeline got f'd up.
I had never thought about that dream with Silvio followed by killing Paulie... I think you combine that with the Cat Scene in the end, along with the fact that Paulie was not a loyal person... He was definitely involved
I will always repeat that: There was a TV preview of final season at Dailymotion, in which Paulie stopping car in woods at night, opening backtrack, and fat Tony hand is falling from trunk with characteristic golden watch on it. And Paulie was saying to the camera: - Will you be here? When death will come to our family? And after that TV lector was saying about last episodes of Soprano to be displayed. I was searching that all day, i regret there was no online downloaders for such websites back than, because for sure i would downloaded it 15 years ago. That video was holy grail in Sopranos theories, and it disappears
I hated Paulie so much I really despise people like that where you treat them better than they deserve and better than anybody else treats them but they still consider it betrayal because they delusionally believe they deserved more, somehow Paulie talking about how everyone is betraying him while he was backstabbing his family at every turn
I could agree with the theory except i don't think any of the three were boss material, and they would need to pass the killing of a boss by the other families. That's why Little Carmine is key as he could be the boss and cement the deal. However, there is a large fly in the ointment. Agent Harris tells Tony that he has an informant who said that Phil's out to get him. And at the stage of proceedings it looks like only Butchie and the Consigliere knew Phil's mind. So it could be that the Consigliere is going to have them all rounded up anyway (along with whatever Carlo says).
Makes a lot of sense. Paulie realised that Tony thought about killing him. The old Tony would not have thought twice, but he had changed and he decided to let him live. New York did a deal with Paulie to give him what he wanted - a chance to step up, but still very much their puppet. So Paulie set up Tony to be killed.
The best part of the show was how Tony's criminal mind worked. "I've killed friends, I've killed family." It is very fitting for Patsy's son to be engaged to Meadow while he is conspiring with NY to whack Tony and take his place. It fits the theme of the show which is more important than trying to discern the facts from the scenes. Tony never had a master plan and Butchie seems a lot like him in that way. He rolls with the situation and is good at riling up the crew with narratives. Like Tony blaming NY after he strangled Ralphie. That would explain Butchie's flips over the last season and why Patsy was being shot at but then could also be the one who Butchie approaches to take out Tony in the end. He wants war with NJ but then he reads the tea leaves and wants peace for his organization to make their money. Then the way Phil dies creates a situation perfect to get revenge on Tony. He didn't know how it was going to end but he was very tuned into how his crew felt at the time and manipulated that to inch closer to where he wanted to be. Just like Tony through the whole show. Paulie would be a liability to let in on a conspiracy. He also seems to want Tony's approval a lot. You don't need any of them to assassinate Tony but NY would probably want someone to take charge after and that would clearly be Patsy. He's smarter and more reliable. Paulie is a survivor because he isn't important enough to be involved in these decisions. NY could count on him falling in line after the deed was done.
I'm glad we all understand that he was killed like there shouldn't be a debate anymore. It's obvious you know how to watch the show that he was indeed killed in the last scene
Paulie talking about the past on the way to florida is a way ot telling tony how to be a boss after the questioning paulies survival instincts kicked in.
First episode titled "Members Only" hints the entire season. Assassin wearing members only jacket in last scene which happens to match members only capo assassination earlier.
Feel like you can add more for Paulie too. Him not giving the money to Carmela when Tony was in the hospital. Carmela telling Tony to keep an eye on him or whatever she said. Hmmm now i need a real rewatch
it felt like they put a little evidence supporting a lot of different conspiracy theories so you can choose which one to believe, they put a bunch of scenes with Paulie and Patsy wanting to betray Tony, which means if they were to, the last episode was the perfect opportunity considering Tony's at his weakest, some evidence for Butchie being in on it, a little bit with Little Carmine maybe having more of say than we knew, but overall for me the focus was more on Tony's personal life and how bleak and meaningless it looked rather than who his enemies are, the focus was mostly on how inhuman and dead everything is around him, to the point that he himself stopped caring, now they don't specifically tell you that but he's clearly dead inside, he feels nothing for Cwistofa and even gets mad at his own son a little after he tries to kill himself, the Tony from the first 5 episodes of Season 1 would have been devastated if his kid tried to drown himself, and there's a reason the color saturation is basically black and white in the last couple of episodes compared to how Colorful it is in the first season, it feels like two completely different Series
you remember the two key giveaways when Patsy was visiting Tony with his wife? At the same time Patsies wife looks down at Carmelas silverware, then Patsy looks up and gives the menacing look of disproval to Tony... Makes me think Patsy let his wife in on the planned hit on Tony.
Definitely Butchie. That could have happened with or without Paulie and Patsy. "We decapitate and do business with whatever's left" was something Butchie agreed with Phil on. Maybe Paulie and Patsy were involved, maybe not. I like the idea that Little Carmine became the ceremonial head of the Lupetazzi family, Butchie became a kind of low-key "street boss", and they absorbed the New Jersey "overglorified crew", doing business with whatever's left. (That would be Paulie and Patsy.)
Yup I’ll agree with that theory💯, Paulie was my favorite character, but I knew he was behind with Patsy and Butchie, on removing Tony. They all played the long game- and waited. In the end everyone was left scratching their heads who did it, because of his accumulation of enemies, but it’s never your enemies, it’s always the people you trust the most.
It was Karen Hill in her witness protection life as Dr. Melfi. Tony ruined her career by being the incurable that she unknowingly empowered, humiliating her. She borrowed Henry’s gun and ended Tony
It was so clear at the end that Paulie had made a deal with New York to take Tony out that I don’t really consider it a theory. The last shot of him was him sunning his face in front of Satriale’s, completely at ease. And it wasn’t the first, second or third time he would have betrayed Tony. Yes he loved and respected Tony, but he also always felt disrespected by him. And he knew what it took to survive in that kind of life by the skin of his nuts. He also shot Dickie (it was his voice on the phone with Junior)
I think the ending was just Tony kept eating onion rings. His guardian angel did make it in time- him looking at her is a symbol of hope. Tony was 47 at the end of the show, and I feel like he died 3 years later of a heart attack. Christopher yelled at him that he would die of a heart attack at the age of 50, etc. And in season 6 part 1, Tony tells Meadow, "Living long enough to hold your grand child in my arms... suddenly, that's very important to me." And back in season 5. "Nothing's ever good enough. He's an ego maniac." "He's old. How do you think that feels?"
I like the vid, but one thing I have a problem with is, and I know your making a point, but the part where you reference Paulie asking “when it’s my time will I stand up” Is him asking himself if he ever has to go to jail for a long stretch, would he stay strong and do the time, or would he rat. This point was even brought up bye tony when he and him are in Florida on the lamb …. It’s paulie wondering if he would make the same choice as pusy bompensario (I know I mis spelled that) lol It’s a sceen that has him questioning his life choices Other than that, solid vid
100%. Patsy and Paulie even discuss it in the bathroom. Paulie almost betrayed Tony before with Sack, and now has been demoted and watched Tony work with the FBI agent.
08:44 There is awkwardness that they play off as a breach of etiquette (i.e. Tony serving Patsy a drink). But Tony's accusing him: "Your son and Carlo's were thick as thieves. He got pinched and you knew. So why did I only hear about it a day later, second hand from Paulie?" Tony only has suspicions at this point. But really his captains are trying to frustrate Tony from making defensive moves (either more violence or going on the lam) because they know he's due to get clipped shortly.
For the love of God Tony didn’t die. Think about it. He would have seen anyone approaching from the front or the side the way he was looking around at everybody. We could see there was no one coming from behind. He was looking right at the camera (right into our eyes) when the screen went to black. WE ARE THE ONE THAT WAS WACKED!!!! We all followed and we all wanted to be in Tony’s gang. We all wanted to be in the action with the gang. We just never expected to get one in the head. You get wacked when you least expect it. And we did not expect it. That is how you die….just black….see nothing hear nothing it’s just OVER just like the series was over. And tony is not the one who had us wacked. He would not have done that with his family there. Someone from New York had us wacked.
Have you ever considered that the hit got stopped/abandoned? Why did it take Meadow so long to parallel park? What is the significance of that part of the scene? Right when she walks in the door to the diner, Tony looks up at her and then the scene goes black....is it possible that When Meadow walked in, the hitman saw her and abandoned the hit because she was right there? Or maybe she screamed and Tony was able to avoid the shot?....I watched that episode today and I find it very peculiar why Chase had Meadow trying to parallel park that many times, that delay has significance in the final moments. If she got it right the 1st attempt, she's sitting down with her back to the shooter, easy hit, he walks by, hits Tony, walks on out. But with Meadow in the doorway and seeing him, I think he abandoned it.....and this is what makes Chase so clever, we are still discussing what really happened in that last scene all of these years later lol
Patsy was the only involved. He had the balls, the desire for vengeance, and the perfect circumstances. Butch has never been decisive. Paulie wouldn’t; If he did he would have to hangout with Patsy and New York 💀 He would have no “friends” which is what he cares the most.
It wasn't Patsy. He buried his revenge in the show. Plus Meadow and Patsy jr were on their way to getting married. The show only points to Eugenes wife. The show literally points to that when they made an episode titled "members only" dedicated to Eugenes jacket which was the same jacket the hit man at the end was wearing. I wonder if Tony killing Chris had anything to do with it. Paulie and Chris were close and had a good relationship, and Paulie saw this as the last straw and that Tony had to go. Remember Paulie sticks up for Chris when Chris points a gun at Tony by saying "It wasn't even loaded".
I thought it was obvious that Butch knew Tony would be at Holsten's because Rhiannon was there with AJ when Carmela announced it. Consider: Rhiannon mentions to AJ that she was an Elite model. Butch has Elite posters in his hair salon (including Rhiannon). Rhiannon was present when Carmela mentions Holsten's to AJ. Tony tries to get rid of Rhiannon several times, but never insists on it. He knows having her around is risky, but lets her get away with it. Tony has a well known weakness when it comes to attractive females who are involved with his relatives, (Adriana) so Rhiannon would be the perfect bait. AJ just happens to meet Rhiannon in rehab during the war with New York.
Patsy and Paulie, i don't really think so. Butch , with support from all of NY - yes. They gave Tony the green light to kill The Shaw of Iran, but i always thought a green light like that, it's essentially extended to "A Boss for a Boss" NY would never have given a green light like that without an equal trade-off.. Green light for Tony in exchange.. Then start completely fresh with new bosses and bad blood gone. Butch - new boss of NY Patsy - new boss of Jersey
I think it's more likely to be Paulie as the new boss. Patsy's just not going to inspire enough fear from lower ranks, much less a guy like Paulie. Other way around, and Patsy gets to be the new Syl.
Part of me thinks Paulie got a massive payout to retire down in Florida with Beansie telling remember when stories, in exchange for taking out Tony Soprano and restructuring new personnel in New Jersey.
1:31 the real issue is that ending is obvious. They spend the entire final season beating you over the head with blatant hints at what it means. The only people who don’t think Tony dies are those who didn’t pay attention and those who are too stupid to connect obvious dots.

That was absolutely brilliant. No one ever spoke to that observation. I had held that thought too. But let it go, thinking it was too big and too wild. Butch was unafraid and despised him. He orchestrated everything. I thought he gave up Phil too. With Pauly I agree it was a horrible vibe. I could not trust Tony after what I saw, did and knew. Pauly went above and beyond causing that tension over the joke. He and Tony were petty and shallow. They were the same coin. Mommy issues and all. I thought getting close to Tony by way of marriage was brilliant. Meadow was never innocent. She caused death and fighting. She was no angel. I still think they were all killed but her. That would be the best ending. AJ was useless as an aire. Carmela was just as evil as Tony in her wearing his rank. Never saw Rosalie do that. Thank you again. All these years. I believe Little Carmine instigated some of it. The keep your enemies close.

Another aspect is the loss of Sil means Tony looses the only person who could have alerted him to something was up with his own capos. Sil was also too invested in Tony and likely was seen by NY as unapproachable.
I also thought of another aspect. Sil was very critical of Paulie. Paulie likely told NY that Sil was trouble from the time he criticized him and saw him as in the way of Tony and their special friendship. Sil always reminded him that in the end he was bad at making money. The ironic thing is that Sil would have been the best to run Jersey even from a NY view. He saw things with a level head knew the crew and how to keep them in line and knew Tony’s problems were very much of his own making. It’s fate that NY incapacitated the one guy they needed untouched.
I forget but didn’t New York essentially want to dissolve the New Jersey family? Them going after ALL the leadership kinda indicates they don’t have the intention of restructuring the family, just absorbing whatever’s left. Plus after the headache that was Tony’s reign I could see them just not wanting to put up with the headache and just cut their losses.

Whilst I originally believed this to be the most likely theory after I finished watching for the 1st time, I realise now that it could just as easily be a dozen other things. There's no doubt a really creepy and eerie supernatural vibe to the sopranos that I think is really overlooked when it comes to discussions of the show, and the prophecies foretold throughout the show (Chris' 3 o clock warning, Junior's 'these things come in threes' etc.)
Personally, I believe that Tony's everpresent and increasing self indulgence sets these prophecies in stone. And its through this almost cosmic wisdom that anybody could have killed Tony. He became such a hated person that there are hundreds of suspects in his death. It really doesn't matter who killed him, just that they did.
That being said, I do believe Patsy and Paulie selling out Tony to new york was a plausible explanation but personally, I prefer the idea that this plan never came to fruition. I like to think that whilst their scheme was set in motion, Tony was killed in a widely unrelated event most watchers probably forgot about around 20 episodes ago.
To me, Eugene's brother-in-law or other relative shot and killed Tony as revenge for driving him to suicide. The hit that Eugene was sent on in the diner, matched with the shooters' Members Only jacket, most likely inherited to him after Gene's death are clear hints at this. Notice how the man looks nervous, unsure of what he's about to do and unfamiliar with the act. He wants justice but is contemplating his options. As he lines up with Tony, at his 3 o clock, where Meadow is supposed to sit, he pulls the trigger and kills Tony in front of his family. Just like Gene did by hanging himself in the family's garage.
Tony would have died anyway, it's just a matter of when. Selling out Tony was not that hard for Patsy or Paulie to do, but I disagree entirely with the idea they would have been comfortable killing him in front of his entire family whom they've known for years.
But as the show has shown us multiple times, that “familial bond” is all bullshit. A prime example is from the sixth season when Paulie expressed contempt for having to pay dues to Carmela. “Fuck her!”….so I doubt that’d stop them…they’d probably look at it as the price of doing business

Arguably Eugene wasn’t mistreated. Eugene voluntarily entered the mob life knowing once you get on you never leave. He reaped all the money and benefits. It would have been nice if he could have left because of an unexpected inheritance but Tony let’s him leave pretty soon all the guys have a reason to leave and he gets accused of playing favorites letting Eugene go but no one else go.

The reason the ending is so great, is nobody is wrong. If you want your theory to be true, it is, and you being right doesn’t mean anyone else is wrong. There’s enough clues sprinkled throughout to support multiple theories, without shutting down the possibility of other theories. I hated the ending at first, but over a decade later, i have come to understand why it’s so great.

Absolutely man, the awesome thing David Chase did was sprinkle moments of mystique thru the series and left some things up to interpretation, fed into the realistic, and yet supernatural, elements of the show
to me the brilliance of the ending is really that no matter which interpretation you subscribe to, ultimately it doesn’t matter. tony is living in a hell of his own making whether he dies in the restaurant or in some other dispute or of natural causes from his gluttonous lifestyle. he will continually alienate himself from anyone close in the exact way his mother did as long as he is alive.
Actually I’m convinced Paulie helped have Tony killed. The only reason it’s never been confirmed is out of respect for the late Tony Sirico who took the part of Paulie only after being promised that his character wouldn’t end up a turncoat or rat. The open-ending kept that promise but at the same time the on-screen hints are too overwhelming to not come to that one conclusion. Perhaps Tony Sirico didn’t even know himself or he did and he went along with it because it could never be proven 100%.
Some people look at Paulie’s final scene out front Satriale’s as a little bit sad because he’s all by himself but I look at it as the result of cleverness and machinations of a career criminal and cutthroat survivor who did what he had to do to keep himself alive.
The boat scene when they are on the run may have been a massive catalyst for his move against Tony. Paulie must have thought his days were numbered after being grilled about that fat joke
If you notice the scene when Tony is at his house with Paulie he looks out the window and sees AJs girlfriend. He probably tipped off NY to follow her to find Tony since she would go visit AJ. With Tony Sil and Chris gone no one left to avenge Tony. AJ for sure isnt gonna do it
But Paulie already betrayed Tony when he told Jonny Sack about the joke. So him betraying Tony wouldn't have made Paulie a rat or a turncoat, because he was still operating within the mafia.

I always thought it was one of three things that happened:
1) Tony gets hit right in front of his family. Reason: This is the way that Phil got hit
2) There's an attempt on Tony's life but Meadow surprises the hitman and she gets hit instead. Reason: This is what happened in Godfather 3
3) No one gets hit, they finish their dinner and Tony ends up flipping. Reason: The real life mob boss of the DeCavalcante family that Tony is based on, Billy Ocean, turns informant.

IMO Little carmine was in on the tony hit with NY. You can see he was trying to warn and counsel tony the last time they talked but dramas and deaths seemed to be the norm with tony as acting boss of NJ. So, when you hear little carmine say "it didn't have to be this way..." at the final sitdown and then walk off with butchie after I knew they were gonna whack him. The truce would've been the perfect opportunity to whack him while his guard was down. The fact that the hit was in front of his family was payback for the hit on phil in front of his wife and grandkids.

I could agree with the theory except i don't think any of the three were boss material, and they would need to pass the killing of a boss by the other families. That's why Little Carmine is key as he could be the boss and cement the deal.
However, there is a large fly in the ointment. Agent Harris tells Tony that he has an informant who said that Phil's out to get him. And at the stage of proceedings it looks like only Butchie and the Consigliere knew Phil's mind. So it could be that the Consigliere is going to have them all rounded up anyway (along with whatever Carlo says).

Makes a lot of sense. Paulie realised that Tony thought about killing him. The old Tony would not have thought twice, but he had changed and he decided to let him live. New York did a deal with Paulie to give him what he wanted - a chance to step up, but still very much their puppet. So Paulie set up Tony to be killed.
The best part of the show was how Tony's criminal mind worked. "I've killed friends, I've killed family." It is very fitting for Patsy's son to be engaged to Meadow while he is conspiring with NY to whack Tony and take his place. It fits the theme of the show which is more important than trying to discern the facts from the scenes.
Tony never had a master plan and Butchie seems a lot like him in that way. He rolls with the situation and is good at riling up the crew with narratives. Like Tony blaming NY after he strangled Ralphie. That would explain Butchie's flips over the last season and why Patsy was being shot at but then could also be the one who Butchie approaches to take out Tony in the end. He wants war with NJ but then he reads the tea leaves and wants peace for his organization to make their money. Then the way Phil dies creates a situation perfect to get revenge on Tony. He didn't know how it was going to end but he was very tuned into how his crew felt at the time and manipulated that to inch closer to where he wanted to be. Just like Tony through the whole show.
Paulie would be a liability to let in on a conspiracy. He also seems to want Tony's approval a lot. You don't need any of them to assassinate Tony but NY would probably want someone to take charge after and that would clearly be Patsy. He's smarter and more reliable. Paulie is a survivor because he isn't important enough to be involved in these decisions. NY could count on him falling in line after the deed was done.

it felt like they put a little evidence supporting a lot of different conspiracy theories so you can choose which one to believe, they put a bunch of scenes with Paulie and Patsy wanting to betray Tony, which means if they were to, the last episode was the perfect opportunity considering Tony's at his weakest, some evidence for Butchie being in on it, a little bit with Little Carmine maybe having more of say than we knew, but overall for me the focus was more on Tony's personal life and how bleak and meaningless it looked rather than who his enemies are, the focus was mostly on how inhuman and dead everything is around him, to the point that he himself stopped caring, now they don't specifically tell you that but he's clearly dead inside, he feels nothing for Cwistofa and even gets mad at his own son a little after he tries to kill himself, the Tony from the first 5 episodes of Season 1 would have been devastated if his kid tried to drown himself, and there's a reason the color saturation is basically black and white in the last couple of episodes compared to how Colorful it is in the first season, it feels like two completely different Series
you remember the two key giveaways when Patsy was visiting Tony with his wife? At the same time Patsies wife looks down at Carmelas silverware, then Patsy looks up and gives the menacing look of disproval to Tony... Makes me think Patsy let his wife in on the planned hit on Tony.
Definitely Butchie. That could have happened with or without Paulie and Patsy. "We decapitate and do business with whatever's left" was something Butchie agreed with Phil on. Maybe Paulie and Patsy were involved, maybe not. I like the idea that Little Carmine became the ceremonial head of the Lupetazzi family, Butchie became a kind of low-key "street boss", and they absorbed the New Jersey "overglorified crew", doing business with whatever's left. (That would be Paulie and Patsy.)
Members only jacket guy has a Russian accent and a relative who miraculously crawled out of the Pine Barrens but was never the same.

Yup I’ll agree with that theory💯, Paulie was my favorite character, but I knew he was behind with Patsy and Butchie, on removing Tony. They all played the long game- and waited. In the end everyone was left scratching their heads who did it, because of his accumulation of enemies, but it’s never your enemies, it’s always the people you trust the most.
It was Karen Hill in her witness protection life as Dr. Melfi. Tony ruined her career by being the incurable that she unknowingly empowered, humiliating her.

It was so clear at the end that Paulie had made a deal with New York to take Tony out that I don’t really consider it a theory. The last shot of him was him sunning his face in front of Satriale’s, completely at ease. And it wasn’t the first, second or third time he would have betrayed Tony. Yes he loved and respected Tony, but he also always felt disrespected by him. And he knew what it took to survive in that kind of life by the skin of his nuts. He also shot Dickie (it was his voice on the phone with Junior)
Or everyone in the restaurant was a fed and Tony was going to be arrested.
I think the ending was just Tony kept eating onion rings. His guardian angel did make it in time- him looking at her is a symbol of hope. Tony was 47 at the end of the show, and I feel like he died 3 years later of a heart attack. Christopher yelled at him that he would die of a heart attack at the age of 50, etc. And in season 6 part 1, Tony tells Meadow, "Living long enough to hold your grand child in my arms... suddenly, that's very important to me."
And back in season 5.

100%. Patsy and Paulie even discuss it in the bathroom. Paulie almost betrayed Tony before with Sack, and now has been demoted and watched Tony work with the FBI agent.
08:44 There is awkwardness that they play off as a breach of etiquette (i.e. Tony serving Patsy a drink). But Tony's accusing him: "Your son and Carlo's were thick as thieves. He got pinched and you knew. So why did I only hear about it a day later, second hand from Paulie?" Tony only has suspicions at this point. But really his captains are trying to frustrate Tony from making defensive moves (either more violence or going on the lam) because they know he's due to get clipped shortly.
For the love of God Tony didn’t die. Think about it. He would have seen anyone approaching from the front or the side the way he was looking around at everybody. We could see there was no one coming from behind. He was looking right at the camera (right into our eyes) when the screen went to black. WE ARE THE ONE THAT WAS WACKED!!!! We all followed and we all wanted to be in Tony’s gang. We all wanted to be in the action with the gang. We just never expected to get one in the head. You get wacked when you least expect it. And we did not expect it. That is how you die….just black….see nothing hear nothing it’s just OVER just like the series was over. And tony is not the one who had us wacked. He would not have done that with his family there. Someone from New York had us wacked.
Have you ever considered that the hit got stopped/abandoned? Why did it take Meadow so long to parallel park? What is the significance of that part of the scene? Right when she walks in the door to the diner, Tony looks up at her and then the scene goes black....is it possible that When Meadow walked in, the hitman saw her and abandoned the hit because she was right there? Or maybe she screamed and Tony was able to avoid the shot?....I watched that episode today and I find it very peculiar why Chase had Meadow trying to parallel park that many times, that delay has significance in the final moments. If she got it right the 1st attempt, she's sitting down with her back to the shooter, easy hit, he walks by, hits Tony, walks on out. But with Meadow in the doorway and seeing him, I think he abandoned it.....and this is what makes Chase so clever, we are still discussing what really happened in that last scene all of these years later lol
Patsy was the only involved. He had the balls, the desire for vengeance, and the perfect circumstances. Butch has never been decisive. Paulie wouldn’t; If he did he would have to hangout with Patsy and New York 💀 He would have no “friends” which is what he cares the most.
It wasn't Patsy. He buried his revenge in the show. Plus Meadow and Patsy jr were on their way to getting married. The show only points to Eugenes wife. The show literally points to that when they made an episode titled "members only" dedicated to Eugenes jacket which was the same jacket the hit man at the end was wearing. It's actually blatantly obvious

I wonder if Tony killing Chris had anything to do with it. Paulie and Chris were close and had a good relationship, and Paulie saw this as the last straw and that Tony had to go. Remember Paulie sticks up for Chris when Chris points a gun at Tony by saying "It wasn't even loaded".
I thought it was obvious that Butch knew Tony would be at Holsten's because Rhiannon was there with AJ when Carmela announced it. Consider:
Rhiannon mentions to AJ that she was an Elite model.
Butch has Elite posters in his hair salon (including Rhiannon).
Rhiannon was present when Carmela mentions Holsten's to AJ.
Tony tries to get rid of Rhiannon several times, but never insists on it. He knows having her around is risky, but lets her get away with it.
Tony has a well known weakness when it comes to attractive females who are involved with his relatives, (Adriana) so Rhiannon would be the perfect bait.
AJ just happens to meet Rhiannon in rehab during the war with New York.
Patsy and Paulie, i don't really think so. Butch , with support from all of NY - yes. They gave Tony the green light to kill The Shaw of Iran, but i always thought a green light like that, it's essentially extended to "A Boss for a Boss" NY would never have given a green light like that without an equal trade-off.. Green light for Tony in exchange.. Then start completely fresh with new bosses and bad blood gone.

I think it's more likely to be Paulie as the new boss. Patsy's just not going to inspire enough fear from lower ranks, much less a guy like Paulie. Other way around, and Patsy gets to be the new Syl.
I was happy with the ending. Regardless of which way it was-it was Tony’s end.
Part of me thinks Paulie got a massive payout to retire down in Florida with Beansie telling remember when stories, in exchange for taking out Tony Soprano and restructuring new personnel in New Jersey.

1:31 the real issue is that ending is obvious. They spend the entire final season beating you over the head with blatant hints at what it means. The only people who don’t think Tony dies are those who didn’t pay attention and those who are too stupid to connect obvious dots.
