Starline's stitched-up, Frankenstein's monster-esque look in the concept art may also be a nod to the first platypus specimens sent to Britain being regarded by scientists of the time as a hoax and not actually a real animal. They assumed that someone had glued the body parts of various animals together, much like Frankenstein's monster. The bolts poking out of his body also ties into the stereotypical 'big green man with stitches on his head and bolts on his neck' look for the monster. Kind of wish they kept that, but I suppose it was overkill (and it would be a pain to redraw them in every panel Starline's in).
Starline being a platypus is a fun little Echidna nod too - platypus and echidna are both monotremes, that is mammals who lay eggs. Starline is a distant cousin of echidna
Another white echidna character in the Sonic franchise was Imperator Ix in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. Given how much of that game took inspiration from the Archie comics -- to the point that there was a series-ending legal debacle about it -- I'm pretty sure that Ix likely takes inspiration from Finitivus (and possibly Zachary) moreso than Wechnia, but it's still worth mentioning.
Only the Sonic fandom (including the officially endorsed part - yes I mean the comics) can make a palette error glitch into an actual character, several times. Absolute madlads.
Out of all the Classic Era games, Knuckles Chaotix I think is the most deserving of some kind of remake or remaster treatment, in order to fully flesh out the gameplay and mechanics to make it all as fluid as it should be, as opposed to jerky and rubber band-y
Starline being a scientist is technically a hold over from the butchered tails from chaotix. All that happened to sonic in that game was that he got painted red and black
Hey, poster of one of those TCRF videos here. Yeah, 1207 is our most complete look at Chaotix's Tails, which features the full moveset and a palette. This moveset would remain in later prototypes, but the palette was quickly removed. He would always jump at full height, and his flying would be controlled reminiscent of how it is in Sonic Triple Trouble, entering the same way as Sonic 3 but controlling like TT. What strikes me interested the most is the animations, which remain all the way up to final. It would imply Tails was given unique sprites and animations past Crackers. There are entries for Tails's sprites, arms, and even Tails's tails in the sprite bank lists too! Unfortunately, in all versions, they fall back to Knuckles' set. Anything borrowed from Mighty is simply a default instead of a fallback. I'm interested in further figuring out the animations to give a proper (interpretated) restoration to Tails.

i love wechnia and all the other pallete glitches, so much has been done with these little unintentional bugs, i love it also i know i've asked this coverage but that was a while ago, how about tikal? a review of her would be pretty interesting, especially if you delve deeper into the echidna species like with shade and the nocturus clan, really interesting stuff

First off, great video, I really love how dedicated you are to go through a glitched character story. For preservation purposes, this is a great one. Second, you quickly moved on Friday Night Funkin with an OC EXE called « Wechidna », well, there is another one, more well known than the other one, that is called « Chaotix ». For a quick thing, he’s the leftover data of Tails imagined as an EXE, his Normal form looks like Knuckles from the Original game although he is a cyclop for some reason, while his Beast form is the closest to Wechnia with the palette and such. While looking up into the song, the background of the beast form screams « Tails ! ». Just that thing. That’s all. Other glitched characters I’m thinking of would be the Bluckles and Redic, both of them are from Sonic 3 and Knuckles, one by a crash + reset and the other one by a Game Genie code… Bluckles name in game is Tails btw. Outside of glitch characters, we can try digging up and search for obscure characters with a one official appearance and then nothing else but that stuck up to the community, but for now nothing comes on my mind haha Anyways, great video, wish you good luck for the next ones. You might see this or not but it’s always worth it to leave it here
Good lord seeing SonicCult again the way it used to be is a blast from the past from me. Think that side got me really interested in a lot of the weird and obscure side of Sonic games and even somewhat linked me into NiGHTS stuff.
Ashura was always my favorite glitch as a kid growing up, I remember telling friends that you can change the color of sonic and knuckles but no one believed me, I also think the Mecha Knuckles from Sonic Advance is a Wechnia reference, it's when you finally broke through his disguise and you see a similar color pallet, gray silver armor and red eye lens with some dark coils around his dreads, but I know thats a stretch, but it's an interesting thought.
Brief aside about Starline; both Platypi and Echidnas are monotremes. Monotremes being mammals that lay eggs. So, you know, further connection between Knuckles and Starline.

But they do share similar niches in their environment and can even have similar abilities; mainly their ability to curl into a ball and the spikes all over their bodies. And Mimic the Octopus is, well, a Mimic Octopus; an octopus that gets its name due to its ability to change its color and general outline to mimic certain animals, even mimicking their behavior, so predators and other creatures will leave it alone. And going back to Starline, that hell-spur thing he has to incapacitate foes? Real-life platypi have those too, a heel-spur. Though only males can inject toxic with it. It's strong enough to kill small animals like dogs, but not larger creatures like humans. At most, it'll cause excruciating pain that can temporarily leave a person incapacitated.
I think Doctor Echidna's are popular because they are known warrior "race" at least the Knuckles clan and the opposing one from SA1 so making doctors would be the exact opposite.
9:50 that specific sprite wechnia is using is actually an unused sprite for knuckles. It was either intended for him turning around while gliding or for him transitioning into one.
20:00 as soon as you mentioned srb2 I went to go tell a certain person (ruby, the same guy that made extra life) who has been making wechnia a character (although as a sprite swap, the mod in question is a port of another mod that just swaps a ton of sprites with knuckles) very cool
I'm glad that these glitch characters have inspired some characters (mostly recolors) but characters like Surge, Kit and Dr. Starline IMO are awesome, it should be noted that both an Echinda and Duck billed Platypus are both Monotreme so it kinda makes sense that Dr. Starline is inspired by Wechnia (like how Tenrecs is like a Hedgehogs)
Glitch characters are fascinating to me. Ashura, Wechnia, Missingno. and his many MANY siblings.... There's just something kind of magical about a character basically being made from a programming quirk. We sadly don't really get those anymore.... I could be wrong, but glitch characters seem to be a relic from an age in gaming long passed....

@@JohnnyVector yup (at least from what I heard) Eggman intentional programed Heavy and Bomb to be against him, and also had them join team Chaotix to act as essentially dead weight/ a hindrance to the team. I also just had a thought that maybe orb bot and cube bot might be based on the duo in a sense. They are loyal to Eggman but they trash talk about him far more often then any other bot has (expect Omega but that's a given) they also are both also share similar design to them in a way that both cube bot and Heavy are both blocky, while orb bot and bomb are spherical... Idk just had that thought recently
Re: headcanon, I have a bit of an idea based on what you've talked about. Off the top of my head; "Wechnia" was an Echidna mage who lived in the original Isolated Island. He'd spent his life studying magic in an attempt to win Pachacamac's favour. He wasn't very good at it, but he did discover the gliding technique, which he would later develop into full-autonomous flight by manipulating turbulence with his dreads. However, Pachacamac and his tribe, who valued brute strength over all, saw Wechnia as nothing more than a crazy old coot. Tikal and her grandmother admired Wechnia and encouraged him in his studies, but this did little to satisfy him. When Chaos attacked, Wechnia tried to avenge the fallen Pachacamac by leaping from the highest point he could find to fight Perfect Chaos alone. However, by an awful stroke of luck, Wechnia slipped off the edge and fell headfirst into the ground, dying upon impact. His body was then swallowed up by Chaos' waves and eventually entombed in the depths where what became Angel Island once lay. In Knuckles Chaotix, Isolated Island rose from the seabed, disturbing Wechnia's soul. When Knuckles went to investigate, Wechnia's ghost followed, seeing his beloved Pachacamac in him. However, neither Knuckles nor anyone else on the island ever realised this, as nobody could see or hear Wechnia, no matter how desperately the mage tried to get their attention. Wechnia continues to haunt Isolated Island to this day, still yearning to be noticed by Knuckles. Maybe he will someday...?
It perplexes me to no end that Knuckles’ Chaotix hasn’t ever been rereleased and has been left on the 32X. Say what you will about this game, it doesn’t deserve to be a game left behind on an underperforming system. Every Sonic fan deserves easy access to this game.

this has for some reason occurred to me here, in this video, but with the re-rise of Sonic serialized media, it would be INCREDIBLE to have an animated IDW Sonic series- with maybe nods to Sonic the Comic and Archie Sonic- made by the creators of the new Ducktales series. I dunno, something about seeing these sleek, fun IDW characters made me think back to how those animators really updated and ran with the Ducktales universe

Theory wechinia is proportinetly made to keep back up sprites without deleting them so they can use them for items an older sonic games but the mock up of sonic crackers used more sprites than knuckles chaotix unfortunately most of these were deleted but weren't forgotten so they weren't intentionally deleting these and they kept a lot of stuff in this ( jeez that was long) Hope this helped so conclusion they kept these sprites for backups and thats why wechninia exists.
I don't know if you've done these before, but I would love to see you do videos on Johnny Lightfoot or Porker Lewis, as I always thought they were quite underrated main characters in the Fleetway saga and had their own unique charms to them respectively. I especially liked when they started wearing the leather jackets, as it felt like they were really coming into themselves, so to speak. I also remember one of them had a bit of a ship tease with Amy Rose at one point, but I don't remember which one 😅 I wonder if (unless you've already done it?) perhaps you'd be open to doing a video on Rankles the Otter!! And thus of course, the silly (April Fools maybe???) magazine article he comes from. I've seen some fan art of him too, in which he is drawn to actually look like what you'd likely imagine an otter "Mobian" to look like, and its pretty cool!
Funny I actually did a new playthrough of Chaotix a week ago, it is a fun game to just go crazy in with the band mechanic, the level design is def the weak part, and the fact each stage has 5 parts instead of 2 or 3 with barely any differences it can get tiring. Just running around with the fun abilities of the Chaotix though makes it worth it imo.
Honestly. I like to think of Wechnia as a kind of alternate Tails. He was tossed out of his own dimension and it broke him, and he's now trying to fix himself
My head canon is that Wechidna (who I like to call Dread the Wechidna) is an alternate version of Knuckles who was experimented on by Dr Eggman, being exposed to negative chaos energy and being turned into a cyborg as part of an experiment called Project Starline, after the 10th test Wechidna escaped and somehow managed to get to the main Sonic universe, due to him being from an alternate reality his power and appearance were glitched, after the defeat of Metal Sonic Kai and the Dark Rings, Wechidna ended up back in his own dimension and vowed to stop Eggman.
Wechnia has sooo much raw potential! 😈 If it was up to me, I'd use Wechnia as a power copying character from Knuckle's past, shape shifting into Nack the Fang Sniper, Mighty, and Tails to get close to Knuckles before a grand betrayal, and turning into Dr. Wechnia Starline later on. I did not say "Nack" by accident. Basically, his power copying gets more limited the more powers he uses at a time; such as, ¹shape shifting, ²flight, ³invulnerability, and ⁰power copying as his default. But (with Nack's unforseen help) because of the unforeseen side effects of the combination of powers, he eventually ends up being tricked into stealing Knuckle's powers while he was still being powered by the master emerald, which glitched his powers into deforming him into a platypus, now becoming Dr. Starline, committing his life to any science that could fix him, or at least get his second revenge. The idea being that Wechnia was the primary reason Knuckles closed himself off from trusting people, ultimately accepting his already secluded upbringing. And now basically repeating the moment that originally kept him from trusting characters like Sonic and Tails respectively, he remembers the way he was affected by his trust in Julie Sue, and how Eggman ended up exploiting Knuckle's distrust. Basically breaking the final chains of the unfortunate memories primarily responsible for keeping him from maintaining his relationships, now having a clear recognition of what he should strive for, after already failing to guard the emerald. Now pairing up with the insufferable Nack every once in a while (nicknaming him Fang) as a treasure hunting partner (with Scourge's hat), hoping to fully recover the emerald again, growing to be the Nack's only real and most precious friend (character development). The origin of Wechnia's shape shifting powers could also have come from a previous fight between Knuckles and his BFF Wechnia, where he got his powers from the previous shape shifter (Knuckle's father Lock or grandfather Alfair), which {with the help of Dr. Zachary's} he tricked into stealing the Master Emerald's ability to give powers before getting his plans foiled by Knuckles, as the new guardian of the Master Emerald. Then comes Dr Finitevus who found new fascinacion with the white echidnas' beliefs (to Knuckle's spite at Wechnia's memory) to control negative chaos energy before eventually joining the Black Legion. The gray chaos emerald could have originated from Wechnia's first defeat, reminding knuckles to be careful of who he trusts. And even Wechnia's red eyes could be explained from knuckles just punching his eyes so hard that he caused internal bleeding, which only his shapeshifting abilities ended up keeping him from losing his sight, later needing glasses after losing his powers. I'm thinking the scheming between the 2 white echidnas could also be a faction who believe themselves to be the rightful masters of the powers of chaos from a long line of a forgotten family of diplomats, who drove out the clan later revealed to be the Black Legion. Maybe having a scene between Dr. Finitevus and Dr. Starline to get back at Knuckles by using Finitevus deal with Enerjack, before ultimately siding with Knuckles and activating him anyway after seeing too much of Dr. Finitevus on himself. Maybe even have Shadow join the fight against Dr. Finitevus to point out any inevitable hypothetical BS on Knuckle's part (as Shadow's "trust & forgiveness" mentor). I want a legitimate Knuckles centered series!

21:03, I'd like to make a suggestion for this character's name to be Olfactornic (Olfa for short), a slightly misspelt version of the word Olfactory derived from the Olfactory Nerve; this is because Olfactronic is typically just like Mighty, the armadillo but if he is exposed to something like the common cold he will transform into Olfactronic the Armournik a robot that is capable of sneezes so powerful they can cause a hurricane or a high pitched ear whistle sound which will cause all of Eggman's robots to be temporarily stunned. (Also Olfactory is a synonym for the word sonic, hence I chose the name Olfa)

20:00 as soon as you mentioned srb2 I went to go tell a certain person (ruby, the same guy that made extra life) who has been making wechnia a character (although as a sprite swap, the mod in question is a port of another mod that just swaps a ton of sprites with knuckles)

My head canon is that Wechnia is the ghost of Knuckle's father, watching over his son from the afterlife.
I'm glad that these glitch characters have inspired some characters (mostly recolors) but characters like Surge, Kit and Dr. Starline IMO are awesome, it should be noted that both an Echinda and Duck billed Platypus are both Monotreme so it kinda makes sense that Dr. Starline is inspired by Wechnia (like how Tenrecs is like a Hedgehogs)
Glitch characters are fascinating to me. Ashura, Wechnia, Missingno. and his many MANY siblings....
There's just something kind of magical about a character basically being made from a programming quirk.
We sadly don't really get those anymore.... I could be wrong, but glitch characters seem to be a relic from an age in gaming long passed....

@@JohnnyVector yup (at least from what I heard) Eggman intentional programed Heavy and Bomb to be against him, and also had them join team Chaotix to act as essentially dead weight/ a hindrance to the team. I also just had a thought that maybe orb bot and cube bot might be based on the duo in a sense. They are loyal to Eggman but they trash talk about him far more often then any other bot has (expect Omega but that's a given) they also are both also share similar design to them in a way that both cube bot and Heavy are both blocky, while orb bot and bomb are spherical... Idk just had that thought recently
Re: headcanon, I have a bit of an idea based on what you've talked about. Off the top of my head;
"Wechnia" was an Echidna mage who lived in the original Isolated Island. He'd spent his life studying magic in an attempt to win Pachacamac's favour. He wasn't very good at it, but he did discover the gliding technique, which he would later develop into full-autonomous flight by manipulating turbulence with his dreads. However, Pachacamac and his tribe, who valued brute strength over all, saw Wechnia as nothing more than a crazy old coot. Tikal and her grandmother admired Wechnia and encouraged him in his studies, but this did little to satisfy him.
When Chaos attacked, Wechnia tried to avenge the fallen Pachacamac by leaping from the highest point he could find to fight Perfect Chaos alone. However, by an awful stroke of luck, Wechnia slipped off the edge and fell headfirst into the ground, dying upon impact. His body was then swallowed up by Chaos' waves and eventually entombed in the depths where what became Angel Island once lay.
In Knuckles Chaotix, Isolated Island rose from the seabed, disturbing Wechnia's soul. When Knuckles went to investigate, Wechnia's ghost followed, seeing his beloved Pachacamac in him. However, neither Knuckles nor anyone else on the island ever realised this, as nobody could see or hear Wechnia, no matter how desperately the mage tried to get their attention.
Wechnia continues to haunt Isolated Island to this day, still yearning to be noticed by Knuckles. Maybe he will someday...?

It perplexes me to no end that Knuckles’ Chaotix hasn’t ever been rereleased and has been left on the 32X. Say what you will about this game, it doesn’t deserve to be a game left behind on an underperforming system. Every Sonic fan deserves easy access to this game.

I would like to name this character Bubblegum The Alligator.
"Bubbles" to her friends, this bright pink mallrat never hesitates to buy anything that strikes her fancy or might make somebody she cares about happy. Her seemingly-endless supply of rings stems from a surprising aptitude for day trading, even if her somewhat airheaded and immature nature make it easy to assume she has wealthy parents that she shamelessly mooches off of (they're actually quite comfortable middle-class).
She also loves all things retro and has a particular weakness for vaporwave. Bubbles has a surprisingly fast run, built up from perpetually hurrying to make it to limited-time events to meet this celebrity or watch that performance; whatever's going on, Bubblegum makes it a point to _be there._

this has for some reason occurred to me here, in this video, but with the re-rise of Sonic serialized media, it would be INCREDIBLE to have an animated IDW Sonic series- with maybe nods to Sonic the Comic and Archie Sonic- made by the creators of the new Ducktales series. I dunno, something about seeing these sleek, fun IDW characters made me think back to how those animators really updated and ran with the Ducktales universe

Theory wechinia is proportinetly made to keep back up sprites without deleting them so they can use them for items an older sonic games but the mock up of sonic crackers used more sprites than knuckles chaotix unfortunately most of these were deleted but weren't forgotten so they weren't intentionally deleting these and they kept a lot of stuff in this ( jeez that was long) Hope this helped so conclusion they kept these sprites for backups and thats why wechninia exists.

I don't know if you've done these before, but I would love to see you do videos on Johnny Lightfoot or Porker Lewis, as I always thought they were quite underrated main characters in the Fleetway saga and had their own unique charms to them respectively. I especially liked when they started wearing the leather jackets, as it felt like they were really coming into themselves, so to speak. I also remember one of them had a bit of a ship tease with Amy Rose at one point, but I don't remember which one 😅

Funny I actually did a new playthrough of Chaotix a week ago, it is a fun game to just go crazy in with the band mechanic, the level design is def the weak part, and the fact each stage has 5 parts instead of 2 or 3 with barely any differences it can get tiring. Just running around with the fun abilities of the Chaotix though makes it worth it imo.
Agreed. The levels aren't really diverse enough. They all kinda blend into one.
Sonic Cult was the unfiltered and odd one of the bunch like 4chan you could roam around and find exclusive interesting stuff.
As an occasional visitor, it was fun to check out. Sonic Retro feels like it's more sanitary successor in a way.

My head canon is that Wechidna (who I like to call Dread the Wechidna) is an alternate version of Knuckles who was experimented on by Dr Eggman, being exposed to negative chaos energy and being turned into a cyborg as part of an experiment called Project Starline, after the 10th test Wechidna escaped and somehow managed to get to the main Sonic universe, due to him being from an alternate reality his power and appearance were glitched, after the defeat of Metal Sonic Kai and the Dark Rings, Wechidna ended up back in his own dimension and vowed to stop Eggman.

If it was up to me, I'd use Wechnia as a power copying character from Knuckle's past, shape shifting into Nack the Fang Sniper, Mighty, and Tails to get close to Knuckles before a grand betrayal, and turning into Dr. Wechnia Starline later on. I did not say "Nack" by accident.
Basically, his power copying gets more limited the more powers he uses at a time; such as, ¹shape shifting, ²flight, ³invulnerability, and ⁰power copying as his default. But (with Nack's unforseen help) because of the unforeseen side effects of the combination of powers, he eventually ends up being tricked into stealing Knuckle's powers while he was still being powered by the master emerald, which glitched his powers into deforming him into a platypus, now becoming Dr. Starline, committing his life to any science that could fix him, or at least get his second revenge.
The idea being that Wechnia was the primary reason Knuckles closed himself off from trusting people, ultimately accepting his already secluded upbringing. And now basically repeating the moment that originally kept him from trusting characters like Sonic and Tails respectively, he remembers the way he was affected by his trust in Julie Sue, and how Eggman ended up exploiting Knuckle's distrust.
Basically breaking the final chains of the unfortunate memories primarily responsible for keeping him from maintaining his relationships, now having a clear recognition of what he should strive for, after already failing to guard the emerald. Now pairing up with the insufferable Nack every once in a while (nicknaming him Fang) as a treasure hunting partner (with Scourge's hat), hoping to fully recover the emerald again, growing to be the Nack's only real and most precious friend (character development).
The origin of Wechnia's shape shifting powers could also have come from a previous fight between Knuckles and his BFF Wechnia, where he got his powers from the previous shape shifter (Knuckle's father Lock or grandfather Alfair), which {with the help of Dr. Zachary's} he tricked into stealing the Master Emerald's ability to give powers before getting his plans foiled by Knuckles, as the new guardian of the Master Emerald.
Then comes Dr Finitevus who found new fascinacion with the white echidnas' beliefs (to Knuckle's spite at Wechnia's memory) to control negative chaos energy before eventually joining the Black Legion. The gray chaos emerald could have originated from Wechnia's first defeat, reminding knuckles to be careful of who he trusts. And even Wechnia's red eyes could be explained from knuckles just punching his eyes so hard that he caused internal bleeding, which only his shapeshifting abilities ended up keeping him from losing his sight, later needing glasses after losing his powers.
I'm thinking the scheming between the 2 white echidnas could also be a faction who believe themselves to be the rightful masters of the powers of chaos from a long line of a forgotten family of diplomats, who drove out the clan later revealed to be the Black Legion. Maybe having a scene between Dr. Finitevus and Dr. Starline to get back at Knuckles by using Finitevus deal with Enerjack, before ultimately siding with Knuckles and activating him anyway after seeing too much of Dr. Finitevus on himself. Maybe even have Shadow join the fight against Dr. Finitevus to point out any inevitable hypothetical BS on Knuckle's part (as Shadow's "trust & forgiveness" mentor).
I want a legitimate Knuckles centered series!

So the GameTap Knuckles Chaotix rerelease DID happen! For the longest time, people were telling me I was crazy and making it up! Almost started doubting myself... I honestly wish Sega rereleased it in some fashion alongside SegaSonic arcade and the Advance/Rush Games

21:03, I'd like to make a suggestion for this character's name to be Olfactornic (Olfa for short), a slightly misspelt version of the word Olfactory derived from the Olfactory Nerve; this is because Olfactronic is typically just like Mighty, the armadillo but if he is exposed to something like the common cold he will transform into Olfactronic the Armournik a robot that is capable of sneezes so powerful they can cause a hurricane or a high pitched ear whistle sound which will cause all of Eggman's robots to be temporarily stunned. (Also Olfactory is a synonym for the word sonic, hence I chose the name Olfa)
