- Unboxing the Sony Xperia L4, the most budget-friendly smartphone in the Japanese giant's 2020 repertoire, complete with a full tour of the specs, camera tech, hardware and software. At just £169 this could be one of the best budget phones to hit the UK, especially thanks to Sony's unique 21:9 design. So here's everything you need to know about the Xperia L4 ahead of my full review.
Compared with last year's L3, you get that sleek slender design and an updated camera setup. The 13MP primary lens is backed with a 5MP Ultra Wide shooter, while you also have a depth sensor for portrait shots. The Sony Xperia L4 sports fewer features than many rivals, but seems more than capable for everyday photos and video.
Performance is limited with a Mediatek chipset on board, but this budget phone can cope with everyday life and even split screen multi-tasking. You should keep going all day on a single battery charge, while the 6.2-inch 720p display is decent for the price.

@Petru Durum Hope thats true. Im looking for a small phone, but the xz2 compact is silly priced because of the demand for it. 2nd hand xz2 c costs more than xperia 5! despite being 2-3 years older. Where did you see this rumour by the way?
Exactly I Don't know if selling people of Sony and other brands actually listening to people. It seems that they made huge income on. Compact phones so they decided to make huge long phones instead.... WHY?

I was amazed by the phone until i heard MediaTek ;_; I guess with all the other features you usually don't have this price they cut down on processor.

You can get Dark Mode on Android 9 by going into developer settings and switching to Night Mode. You can access developer settings by tapping on your build number in the About Phone section multiple times. Works with apps like Instagram and so on.

Sony(&Ericsson) back in old days (2010-2013): innovative designs, some of the most advanced Android phones, decent cameras like XZ1, first to make mass market normal (not chonksty brick) waterproof phones, pretty high sales.

Sadly not, beyond control over the scene mode - not really sure why, unless it's a hidden feature!
All the L series right from the beginning are very poor when coming to the camera section and obviously No Manual settings, rather more " beauty settings "
It's just to keep the other next model alive..

You shouldn't recommend any low end Sony phone to others though. At least high midrange like Xperia 10 2 for sony. Low end from Sony is bad and ruining Sony images.

The design is sleek and that is one thing I really like in the smartphone. Camera and processor also seems decent.
Dow this phone have any waterproof rating and can it be unlocked without using the finger print sensor. I want to use the phone for off road navigation while it is in a case on the bike. Thanks

That’s a solid value , I have always liked the Sony skin on android more than any other phone.... cameras speakers are top notch... they usually break at battery and heat dissipation....hope they have got things up the sock this time...

I have just been given a Sony Xperia L4 to replace a Nokia Windows based phone but was surprised not to have a user manual with it. I went online to the support pages (UK version) and have attempted to register the device which apparently then allows you to see a user manual but despite trying to register the device using my tablet and old phone I cannot get the system to cooperate. It allows me to enter the model number and recognises this with a green tick but that is all it does. The pull downs for the place it was purchased for and the tick button for whether it was bought online or not do not react at all. Am I just wasting my time and should give up on Sony ?
Someone you know because in amazon they are no longer selling sony xperia as xperia xa2 ultra or xperia xa2 plus or xperia L4 models I'm looking at amazong from another country but I don't see that they are coming or it will be because we are having a bad time because of the covid-19 someone knows

I see so many people have Xperia 1 ii hands on vids going live today. Where is yours mate?
While I appreciate the 100s of settings in the pro apps and love the great sensors and lenses Sony has chosen, at the end of the day this is a mobile and most shots are taken in seconds. Straight out of the pocket, launch the app, select mode, take the shot and trust the mobile will nail the shot.
Would love to see you review:
1. Video: So keen to know if this is as good or better than iPhone in 4k video in light and dark situations, without needing to go to pro camera apps, using regular, telephoto and ultra wide lenses. Also test ultra slow mode and macro shots please. Is there h265/HEVC on video?
2. Photo: Can it match Pixel and iPhone in stills e.g. good lighting, low lighting and astro shots again, without needing to go to the pro apps. Any HEIF on the Camera?
3. Even if using pro app how good is it at Astro shots?
Also would be great if you can test and talk about:
1. Sound from front facing speakers
2. How good is the DAC and amp on the 2.5mm port
3. Color accuracy of the screen
4. Customization of home screen. Can I add on screen navigation back?
5. Actual real world battery life and charging speeds.

Is it worth it to trade my xperia x from 2016 to the l4, I'm very amused by this 21:9 display of the new xperia lineup but aren't really sure about it's performance in gaming and video editing
