    I didn't really even flinch when Stewart showed up. It's not like a different Superman showed up on the scene; the Green Lanterns are a huge team with several humans, and the human Lanterns are famous for rotating coverage of Earth like taking year long shifts.

      Now all we need is for them to randomly have Kilowog substitute for for the human Lanterns on the League when they are all off having a meeting or something.

      I was never a big Kyle Rayner fan. He was ok, but Hal was my all time favorite Green Lantern after i read "Emerald Twilight". I thought both John and Guy were better Green Lanterns. John is my true GL. I saw Kyle in the Superman episode growing up, but never cared for him. John, on the other hand, actually represented me and people like me, and then when we actually got to know him, he was a more fascinating character.
    One could argue he was one of the most important characters of Justice League. On par with Bruce and Clark.

      Batman tends to overshadow others in whatever continuity he is in, but the Bat-Embargo helped stop that. Superman... He had the Darkseid, Brainiac, and Luthor stories, but his grudges never stayed at the forefront. Meanwhile John and Shayera got the focus arc of Starcrossed, and John got a/the major arcs of The Savage Time and The Once and Future Thing.
      He wasn't at the foreground of the premiere, the expansion, the Cadmus Crisis, or the finale, but those and some other stories were designed to flesh out the world and ensemble anyway.

    I saw Justice League before Superman the Animated Series, so I had the opposite reaction, it was strange to me that Kyle was in Superman and not John. But at the same time before I even watched Justice League I was introduced to the Green Lanterns through Duck Dodgers, and I also grew up with Batman the Brave and the Bold along with the movie Green Lantern First Flight. So the point is, by the time I saw the Superman episode with Kyle Rainier I was already used to the idea of there being multiple Green Lanterns but I still didn't know that character existed before watching Superman.

    The DCAU has a small habit of taking the origins of one character and using the name of another. It doesn't bother me, but I don't really understand it. I believe we've seen that with Tim Drake, Kyle Rayner, and Wally West.
    Also, side note, this video is bringing back my feelings of sadness that we can't fit Green Lantern TAS into the DCAU.
    Also also side note, that cat moment.

    • @roshana110
      @roshana110 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We Remotely Low
      Well when the show was made, I’m pretty sure Rayner and West were the official GL and flash because of Jordan’s Parralax thing and Barry Allen dying in Crisis. I don’t think the dcau wanted to counter the ongoing comics but they also didnt have time to show how “legacy characters” work. Like they’d have to show Wally as kid flash and then introduce the idea of Barry and the idea of him dying and Wally taking the mantle. It’s all a little much for an already extensive story.
      With the robins though, I feel like Jason Todd is almost synonymous w/ death. So they just decided “let’s have Jason Todd but give him another name”. And SPOILER he still undergoes a similar tragedy bc of the joker

    • @Gibbypastrami
      @Gibbypastrami ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@roshana110 yeah they've literally said they just didn't want to use the name of Jason Todd but they liked his story they didn't want you to know exactly where his story is headed
      And with Wally and Kyle, I agree with what you said, but also feel like it could've been done in a way that made things a little easier on continuity, didn't create such restricting situations, because they did what they did with Kyle, then decided they still wanted John and eventually Hal and Guy too, so, just, have some forethought lmao
      With Wally too, it irritated me, but also, his origin being a flashback and not being super in depth gives some wiggle room, it's my personal headcanon that Barry was the Flash first (and/or Jay Garrick) and that Wally just pretended to be the only one, because he was the only one at the time (Jay had retired, and to me either Barry is in the speed force or has retired as well)
      Wally may have been Kid Flash under Barry, but he never went by the name, there were two Flashes for a bit, then eventually it was back to just one, and this one looked like the original so it must be the same guy! Is actually Wally now having taken up the mantle
      And I wouldn't be opposed to it being revealed that Hal was a lantern before any of them, he got his ring from the Lantern before Abin Sur, then his whole Parralax thing happened, Abin Sur then gets a ring, who gives it to Kyle, and John gets one from the OA or somethinf

    • @AustynSN
      @AustynSN ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Gibbypastrami Given that the producers stated that Wally is the only Flash that universe ever had, but that they also showed a KidFlash costume, as well as Jay's helmet, combined with their habit of giving newer characters the origin of older ones....
      My head canon is that when Wally was a kid, his favorite superhero was The Flash, aka Barry Allen. He read the comics, watched the John Wesley Shipp series, etc. When he got his powers, he patterned himself after his boyhood hero.
      The helmet and kid flash costume were gifts from an unseen adventure where Wally accidentally traveled to a parallel universe where not only did Barry exist, but there was an elder Flash named "Jay", and his own younger self was Barry's jr sidekick. They gave him some extra costume pieces as souvenirs, which he donated to his reality's Flash Museum.

    When I was introduced to the DCAU Justice League, all I'd seen beforehand was Batman: The Animated Series, most of The Zeta Project, most of Static Shock, and some of Batman Beyond as I had no cable, and the WB (later CW) didn't have a local broadcast affiliate until The Zeta Project was new. Batman: The Animated Series had aired on the local Fox affiliate, but everything in between was missing... *including* Justice League.
    I *knew* of it, though and... I cannot remember if it bothered me, if I thought it was a good thing, or if I just didn't care. The (relatively) short version is Hal Jordan is hard to write well, especially with "Saturday morning" constraints *and* seems to attract the toxic element of the general fandom. You know, the ones that either serve as an excuse or an actual motivating factor when DC panics and reverts to the iconic version of a character *after* successfully establishing a "legacy" successor, like how Wally West went from being *the* Flash to maybe he exists, maybe he doesn't, or maybe he does but now he's dead in the present. @_@
    Sounds like the DCAU version of Kyle Rayner was just a stand-in for Hal Jordan, and that sounds very unappealing. Whether John Stewart was chosen because they thought they had good stories to tell with him or because of corporate pressures to "diversify" the cast, he was performed and written so well that he went from someone (as a casual with respect to the DC universe) didn't really know existed to competing with the other big names as my favorite Green Lantern.
    Yes... that was the "short" version. It was originally going to be about twice as long. XD

    One thing that did kinda bug me about the whole Green Lantern side of the DCAU is John Stewart's lack of overall backstory with GL villains such as Star Saphire and Sinestro (minus their interactions in "Fallen Hero"), due to his serving on the honor guard. Sometimes I just wonder if they'd have had Rayner have some more history with these characters, as he was the DCAU's stand-in for Hal Jordan.

    The DCAU John Stewart Green Lantern is MY Green Lantern. When I read a Green Lantern comic or see John Stewart in any piece of fiction, it is Phil LaMarr's baritone voice I hear. As a Marine Corps veteran, I appreciate his existence in the DCAU and DC Comics as a whole. He's one hell of a Marine and Green Lantern. You want to see a job get done, give it to him. Never had a problem with John in the Justice League. The 8 year old me was just happy that they are on screen together.
    With the lenses of hindsight though, I still don't have a problem with John. I mean sure, in his early appearances in the comics, he might have been an asshole, but he's still a well-fleshed out character. Also, it's preferable to have a black character in the group in an effort to diversify the cast rather than turning a white character black also for the purpose of diversity. Bruce Timm and Dwayne McDuffie knew how to do diversity right. They took an existing black character and gave him the center stage instead of what Hollywood and comic book companies are doing right now like in the case of Fan4stic where they made the Human Torch, a white character, black so that they can say they made an effort at diversity. That's not a genuine effort at diversity at all, it's flat out lazy writing.

    About John Stuart, Pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths, anyway, his origin was that Hal Jordan received a "call to duty" while taking a shower. In his efforts to get to his ring, he literally stepped on his soap then fell and injured himself to the point that his Ring placed him in a healing coma and then scanned the immediate area for the closest candidate, John Stuart. I cannot recall whether Hal Jordan recovered from the fall or not; but, after that point, JS became the GL for Sector 2814. If anyone can recall which issue of Green Lantern this was, I'd appreciate it.

    As I seem to recall it, going back to the comics before Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985), John Stewart first substituted for Hal Jordan while Hal was taking a shower. He reached for his ring and a towel . . . then promptly stepped on a bar of soap. What sentience the Green Lantern Ring has (had), determined that Hal was not dead so it placed into an "induced coma" so his wounds from the fall could heal. Because of the urgency of the mission, the Ring determined that John Stewart was the closest human to meet all the criteria of being a Green Lantern and deputized him. After that I can't recall what happened in regards to Hal or John. At the time of Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, the demographic that DC was targeting only knew John Stuart as the Green Lantern for Earth. {For the same reason, that's why the Wally West version of the Flash was used in JLA & JLA Unlimited.}

    I read a GL comic once, a LONG time ago that had Hal Jordon and Guy Gardener talking about how Hal got his ring when Abin Sur died, In a flashback it said that Jordan and Gardener were both selected by the ring at the same time as being worthy but it was Sur's decision to choose Jordan as the new GL since he was closer than Gardener, Jordan was in California and Gardener was in New Jersey at the time and so Hal became GL. Gardener asked why John Stewart wasn't chosen as well and Jordan said it was because, although he was worthy, at the time he was still just a child (seven years old at the time I believe) so that's why the ring didn't choose him. So I believe there is an age discrepancy in your theory
    I can't remember the comic book issue it was in but this is the same that Jordan allowed Guy Gardener to see what would've happened if he, Guy Gardener, was chosen by Abin Sur to become Green Lantern instead of Hal.
    Spoiler alert, Guy's career mirrors that of Hal but he gets exposed to a lethal amount of radiation not long after being chosen (a couple of years or so) and his dying act is to choose Hal Jordan to become the new GL

    The DCAU used other alternative hero’s such as Wally West vs Barry Allan, Hawk Girl vs Hawk Man (The Carter Character isn’t the real Hawk Man) also by Justice League the heroes side kick phase had mostly ended. Also remember back in the Late 1990’s and Early 2000’s Camp was a bad thing. Many of the original hero’s would just be Good Chums with each other, adding the diversity of personalities really made sure it wasn’t another Super Friends.

    One of the first lines spoken by John Stewart in JL is "Who's the rookie?" (In reference to Wonder Woman), so they do at least pay some lip service to Stewart having experience. Given all of the cosmetic changes made to established characters for JL (Batman's costume, Superman's and Aquaman's appearance) I don't remember being too put off by seeing John instead of Kyle at the time. It felt more like a 'this will get explained in a future episode' point. It is a bit strange they don't address it "In Blackest Night" though it may have been in the original script and cut for time. Last minute changes weren't uncommon during JL's first season -- they made and aired a promo for "Legends" that had the Justice Society/Alan Scott in it, for example.

    I remember watching both DCAU JL and Superfriends with Hal Jordan, and thought Superfriends GL looked weird and didn’t really have much to do, so Jon Stewart was always my GL. I never advocate for diversity or any changes from comics just for the sake of it, but the creators of the DCAU somehow almost always made it work for the better. I was never exposed to the Justice League or Green Lantern before John Stewart. So as far as I'm concerned, he's always been the Green Lantern. He's certainly the version I saw the most of and liked the best. He had a different personality from other Leaguers and I think it emphasized the thing about GL lore that I love the most about them: anybody can become one. You are not a GL by birth, by accident or by the resources available to you. You are a GL because you are good and strongwilled. It made sense for the GL corps to be a diverse team, and what better way to show this than with a black superhero?

    My recollection was that it wasn't John Stewart that was unpopular. It had more to do with what Bruce Timm was saying in interviews and on forums at the time. That the S:TAS episode wasn't cannon. I think back in Season 1 of JL, they were taking a much more loose approach with continuity saying some things may not have happened. I think we all understood Beyond could exist in a nebulous place but it really hurt to return to the main timeline and characters but not have some of their adventures count. Seemed like the lazy way out. I'm really glad McDuffy and others really leaned into continuity later, good writers can always find way to make things line up.

    While it's not canon, Green Lantern: The Animated Series had Hal Jordan as Green Lantern. In one episode he goes back to Earth and finds out while he was gone, a man named Guy Gardner was taking care of things. Guy seems to be extremely popular on Earth and also among Lanterns and Guardians(Ganthet, I think sees him and begins to act very casual and "brolike" around Guy). in another episode Guy Gardner shows up I space to help Hal. Hal asks If he's here, who's acting as the Green Lantern of Earth. Guy says he gave the Ring to someone named(struggles to remember name)... John Stewart, he thinks. Hal exclaims loudly "THE COMEDIAN!?"
    Possible Prequel?....Probably not...but it's fun to think about.
