Winterland, San Francisco, November 1976 and I was hooked for life. BOC was an incredible live band with the full crew: Joe, Albert, Alan, Eric and Buck. 17 BOC shows with all the guys and I still long for one more.
Blue Oyster Cult came to a bar in Lubbock Tx and played their first 3 albums plus reaper. I paid 10 bucks to sit at a table 20 ft away. I thought it was a joke or a tribute band, but went anyway. IT was THEM!!!! all of them. THey played 3 of my favorite albums of all time. I loved it and them. Love this song, one of my all time favorites. Astronomy, July Morning, Child in Time, Stairway to Heaven. All in the highest caliber of music on the planet.
Oceanmachine27 Hey ! Hey, Hey ! Here we have the exception proving the rule perhaps - but to quote Miracle Max from the Princess Bride "He distinctly said "to blave." And, as we all know, "to blave" means "to bluff,".
One of the greatest bands- the Bouchards, Allan Lanier, Darma and Bloom. The problem when you get that many great writers and singers in the same band- We can all see how great it is for them all to be together but it probably doesn't look that way from the inside necessarily. If they do a reunion tour, I hope they sell the kind of tickets they deserve. Mine will be among them.
I don't understand why Joe was overlooked so much! I loved his bass playing, and of course his solo stuff and with Albert! Joe's amazing and so talented! 🎸🎶💞🥰
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Blue Öyster Cult. The lyrics are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the words will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Buck Dharma's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these songs, to realise that they're not just catchy - they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Blue Öyster cult truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the meaning in Cagey Cretins' existential catchphrase "Oh cagey, what you got?," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Sandy Pearlman's genius wit unfolds itself on their iPod. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, i DO have a Blue Öyster Cult tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎
Keep coming back to this one - the juxtaposition of the acoustic, busking style and the way out there lyrics shakes my musical weird tree in a good way. Keep imagining him busking this outside a mall maybe with glowing tentacles dragging startled passers by into the extra-dimensional wormhole that's opened up in front of his performance.
Astronomy is a classic no doubt but my fave Joe songs are Celestial The Queen, Screams, Morning Final, Nosferatu. Very underrated also one of the best.
Don't forget my dog -- fixed and consequent. Dog star? Astronomy has never left my Top 40 all-time songs -- and I do admit new stuff from time-to-time.
Bouchard brothers were very talented musicians. AL was a fantastic drummer and could sing. Joe was an underrated and underutilised bassist who could also sing. As legendary as buck dharna is, i believe that the bouchard brothers should have sung more songs instead of bucky.
+Danial Shah Joe was far from underutilized. Thats the genius of the Cult - nothing overboard and no one outshining any other band member. Joes playing is incredible, as is Bucks. as is Alberts. Worlds best band - BAR NONE.
Albert Bochard, drummer, was an amazing song writer. And so was brother Joe, fantastic! All 5 wrote, but the Bouchards sense of melody was terrific. Especially Albert.
Outstanding

Awesome. Love Joe. Missing him in the Band.So cool and extremely talented.
one of the many great things about BOC, all five guys were incredible songwriters
One of my Most Favorite Songs ❤❤. Absolutely Beautiful 😻 Thank you so much Joe
Saw BOC preform this when I was a young teen in 1976 with an incredible laser light show. This solo performance rivals those legendary shows.priceless.
Joe, Joe, Joe, you've been sorely missed as has your bro...
I saw Joe play a 10 minute bass solo in the early 80’s. I have yet to see another bass player touch that solo.
Not many people can come close to doing this Joe is a true master.
Wow...i knew Joe played a mean bass, but didn't know he could jam on guitar like this....just...wow.
Another example of why BOC was the best rock band ever
Brought tears to my eyes. My favorite BOC song. How come I only found this today?
One of the coolest unpluggs. The guy pulled it off 👏
Love this great version. It's also great to hear every every word so clearly.
+Twirlyhead Except for maybe those "blavely" digs of his.... :)

Thank you so much!!!
Thanks, this is great! It shows Joe and his deep artistry. It says so very much to his pure musicianship!

And Dennis Dunaway?
Joe was often overlooked but without the Bouchard brothers BOC wouldnt exist! Thanks guys!

Secret Treaties = masterpiece. Way too cerebral to have mass appeal but those of us who 'got it' played the grooves off of it.

You are so right mr Duck Bharma!
Albert Bochard, drummer, was an amazing song writer. And so was brother Joe, fantastic! All 5 wrote, but the Bouchards sense of melody was terrific. Especially Albert.
And Eric's singing and Allens keys amd rhythm guitar.
John Goodman was in BOC?!!
Traced back from Metallica’s remake. Original one is outstanding, despite Metallica’s awesome work!
