I really love this song but in spite of denials it's really about suicide, just listen to the lyrics. That does not upset me, it's really great lyrically, suicide is part of our existence. Who hasn't felt like ending it sometime.
@@leesulkowski6238 it's not about suicide, it's a about accepting your own mortal condition. A lot of people have that fear, not knowing what awaits them after death, but this song says you don't have to be afraid of death, you need to live your life without thinking about what is going to happen in the end, because that's the only way you can be happy, "Seasons don't fear the reaper, nor do the wind, or the sun, or the rain, we can be like they are, cmon baby don't fear the reaper". Buck wrote that song because he was diagnosed with some irregular heart activities, and that made him think about his own mortality, How he could die at any moment, and how he could have died at a young age. And it also talks about eternity, like when the song says "Valentine is done, here but now they're gone", or when the song talk about "Romeo and Juliet", that part is not actualy emphaciszing the fact that Juliet commited suicide, but the fact that she had faith that her love would be waiting for her in the afterlife, a thing Buck was also thinking when he wrote the song.
That solo at the end almost brought me to tears. Ive been a fan of this song for year but never heard this live version. The respect I have for this band!

I've seen them live several times over the years, going back to THIS tour as a matter of fact. They are a PHENOMENAL live band, solid musicians all around. They're still touring, I saw them in Kansas City a few months back, and this song still kills live. BÖC, on tour forever.
Many years ago, I dated a girl who was a pot head, mainly because her parents were old hippies and her mom was her supplier…I was told. But when this song came on, she’d say, “don’t fear the reefer!”
Love it! The world has gone crazy, accumulating "stuff" blowing each other up, killing the planet, at the end of it, we are here then we go somewhere else. They don't put pockets in shrouds. Learn, love, protect the planet, Oh and have a good time too!
The robot voice at the beginning is awesome! BÖC has such a cool, mystical vibe to their songs. Plus, it is a crime that Buck Dharma is such an underrated guitarist.
Listen for the last note of the solo, it holds until the second line of the next verse. You can hear it steady through the hook at he beginning of that final verse, then drop out right before the line "came the last night of sadness". Its hypnotic yet you dont even realize you're hearing it until you listen for it. Once you hear it, you'll hear it forever. A subtle touch but an integral part of the song's mesmerizing quality.
Rick, nice catch. It's tough to get past the mastery and beauty of Buck's guitar playing here, but you are so correct on Joe's bass work. It is clear, precise and driving all the way through. His backing vocals are superb on this as well. BOC
I love the way Buck takes already "awesome" songs to even higher levels with his seamless live extended solos - here, on Veteran of the Psychic Wars, Astronomy (Some Enchanted Evening version), and Last Days of May... just to name a few. Nothing wrong with too much Rush tho
Yes although very different I think a lot of people can appreciate Rush & Blue Oyster Cult .. inventive/imaginative songwriters & great musicians all ........
Alex Marr fuck ya listen to them daily
I wish it were 1977, I am in HS, at this concert and stoned out of my mind! But.. that was a long time ago!
I bet it feels like last month..
Why, why as we age do the years go by like minutes?
Holy shit this is fricken tight man!! awesome vocal chorus, sky high guitars, in your face drums, spanking bass wow.
This is a masterpiece!!!! Love it!! miss those times!!!
I was at this show! I was 19. One of my best concerts ever. This live version is the best, in my opinion. Stellar guitar solo from Buck (my all-time guitar hero).
Wow! That guitar work. I fear the reaper less listening to that.
