I’m just finishing up my figure, it’s really cool to see how much similar and different our approaches were to painting him, those greenish/ yellowish browns really make a huge impact with gold. I like the way you did his face, i started with a sickly flesh tone then did a very dilute contrast purple then dry brushed with the flesh tone again then i used that same contrast to pick up the scars on his head.
He certainly appears ready for the slaughter as is! One small detail I could pick up in the 360 was some areas might pop even further with a bit of oil wash panel lining--namely where the pauldrons meet the trim and some of the many, many rivets. Only on the front of course, the underglow on the back is PERFECT 🤌
Great job, he looks suitably evil. I've got this model sitting in a drawer awaiting me feeling courageous enough to try painting him. Only thing I would try is black lining (or dark red lining) around the trim on his shoulder pads to provide a bit of separation there.
Thank you, Matthew! 'Black lining' are the magic words! Got fairly far by building from near-black everywhere and staying careful with building up the mids and highs, but 100% you're right -- need some delicious definition!
I haven't thought to use a different light source for a whole chunk of a mini. This has inspired me to paint a ragged squad of guardsmen and guardswomen looking up at an undescribable evil; which if disney has taught me anything, will be glowing lime green :D
Love your videos, mate! Especially the way you approach lighting, filtering and so on. I'm an veteran minipainter, and already knew about the stuff you're talking in your videos but... and here's the kicker: I feel like your videos rearranged my knowledge about colour in a way that minipainting will never be the same from now on. I only stumbled upon your channel yesterday and I've been pretty much binge watching. Since you're off patreon, I send you a little gratitude thru super like. Your next Coffee or pint with your mate or SO is on me! Thanks mate, 'preciate your content!
I think your advice on nmm about looking at the whole rather than the parts is possibly the most useful thing I've heard on the subject, I've only tried a couple of times, but ended up hyper focussing on each element. Though, having said that, one of my favourite reference images for space marine trim is pictures of gold and silver rings.

Danke!
Thank you so much, @rainerhorbach8903!!

Thank you, Ben! A little more of the old definition is certainly in order!
Incredible vid. That nmm is wizardry
Thanks so much!

Yes! Get out and get those guards in some despicable Disney dayglo green! :D

Thank you, Phil!

And thank you here too! Yes, even watching videos about stuff you already know can open up new ideas. Really really appreciate the support!
He's an oil painting! A hideous, hideous oil painting! Awesome stuff 😎
Thank youuuuuu 😁😁😁

Really glad it was helpful! It's super easy to get sucked into detail too soon, I think. Sketch, refine, sketch, refine!
One does not simply fly into Mordor.
🧙🦅
very close rendition but i think the original picture of him shows darker metals, yours are more yellow, otherwise its super close to that pic
Cheers! Yeah, I was aware he was a bit yellower than the Gibbons piece as I was painting him, but I'm OK with that, I think... :D
