  • One of the best high school LD debate rounds! These two dynamic LDers went head to head at the quarter final round at 2016 NITOC national championship tournament (high school).
    The resolution:
    Resolved: Developing countries ought to prioritize economic growth over environmental protection.
    The decision was a controversial 3-2 vote for Aff with the judges in the majority voting on speaking skills, passion and the big picture - personal belief that the "economy must come first", while the judges in the minority voted on substance, evidence, and line by line refutation.
    (Comments from Coach Griffith Vertican, esq. - has Coached both students)
    "I've had the privilege to coach both Austin and Thomas. I can tell you while they have very unique styles they both shared the common disciplines of working hard, preparing well, thinking strategically, and being teachable.
    Austin - is one of most likable and gifted communicators I have worked with. He has excellent technical skills and was extremely efficient. He was the only debater to go undefeated during the preliminary rounds at nationals and was one of the few top debaters to advance running negative on Rez 2 (same-topic as this video).
    Thomas - is probably the most passionate communicator I've ever coached. He is incredible intelligent and way beyond his years in understanding of philosophy, world view, and strategy. He placed fourth at nationals in his first full year of competition, so he has incredible potential!
    I'm excited to see where both end up next. They no doubt will make a major contribution and impact in whatever field and career they set their minds to."

    when the bio says that aff won due to speaking skills and that neg had the better case but lost, this is what happens when you throw lay judges into such important rounds smh

      My coach has seen someone with really bad cases but good argumentation beat other opponents and people like me who are bad debaters but make good cases win all the time. I assume AFF just had better argumentation, I didn't watch the whole thing

      The judges didn't vote on arguments, or only let it play very little into their decision. Also, aff got the last word so yeah parent judges. The judges also seemed to have a preconceived notion that economic growth is better. In my opinion, neg very clearly won on the flow (not to take away from aff skill)

    Texas UIL here so maybe things are different at NIETOC but what??? No criterion? Arguing in CX from Neg? This is a Quarters round? Also barely any cited sources in AC? Is this normal for Nats?

  • @randomthoughtstoday

    Isnt this considered too slow of speech ( the AC,) for the Aff?

      @@Moonmerism As a non-lay judge I would say the pace of speech was almost perfect. The argument was discernible, and there was emphasis placed on the points. Spreading, although not illegal in competition, is highly frowned upon by many judges across the country.

      oceanofhorses Because respectable speakers and debates are easy to follow, have strong points that are the crux of that debate rather than spreading and having a plethora of cards. This is lincoln Douglas, not policy.

    • @thomaskeane7490
      @thomaskeane7490 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because Lincoln Douglas Debate is supposed to be about value and not certain policies. Traditional judges (which is most of them) take off speaker points for spreading. This isn’t policy debate where you try to jam as many arguments into eight minutes as possible. This is simply about morals and values.

    • @celinenunez8229
      @celinenunez8229 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally I go faster but you have to get the feeling off of the judge but for prestigious judges like this they prefer eye contact and strong voices you can make up an entire case but if you always speak confidently and look at the judge and never your opponent they'll give you the win

      @@ethangoolsby3583 IMHO spreading is a crutch used by those who are not able to draft concise arguments, and instead just spam direct quotations.

      @@danestanley7108 ehhh... if you look at some top debaters now like Karan or Justin, they spread AND make arguments that are sound. If you can spam a lot of arguments and win on most layers on the flow, you basically win every time, which is why you see these people getting 6 or more bids.
