And that's not all: I go to my city's public high school; he goes to the much smaller and less popular charter school that accommodates certain students. I know him because he's my friend's cousin, and it didn't take long to know his character. He is slow; he always needs clarification and accommodations to the instructions you give him. I felt for sure I could beat him in the debate competition, but he actually had--and this really does pain me to say this--greater points to counter mine. They were so deep and logical. After losing to a guy who often "doesn't get it" and will be a seventeen-year-old sophomore in a tiny charter school, I realized I didn't have what it takes for debate team after all. I always thought I was so smart, but it looks like I'm stupid, huh?

@@positivefraud3012 No, his school isn't more advantageous. I meant it's much smaller (at least 10 people graduating and approximately 15-20 students per grade) while my school has way more graders and graduates. And I hear his school is an easier learning environment. As far as I know, they make classes and assignments simpler. Smarter people don't need that school, when they can rise to an academic challenge and be in my town's public high school (that's one reason I can't believe I lost to this guy). I'm surprised his school even has a debate team; that and cross country running is it. My school has way more teams. As for this particular student, I don't know his backstory or methods to gain debate skills. But that's not the point; the point is, he just doesn't grasp information and instructions as quickly as anyone could. He is SLOW. I can totally see him scratching the top of his head with a finger while saying, "I don't get it." I'll admit I don't know what his grades are, but he once told me he had to switch out of his chemistry class to take his own simpler assignments to Special Ed. Yeah, that sounds about right. And that's why I'm horrified I lost to THIS guy in a debate. Debate teams are intellectual challenges for deep thinkers who got the brains to counter different brains. I CAN'T lose to a guy who's in a tiny charter school, slow at grasping in general, switched to Special Ed for chemistry (a class that is so easy, by the way), and is graduating at age TWENTY. That's just...ridiculous! So I gotta ask, does my losing to him in particular make me stupid?
I beg to differ, you lost fair and square it doesn’t mean your less smart , it only shows there is still room for you to grow and the thing about debate is, much like the law who has better points goes a long way than who is right or wrong, you just self examine yourself in the most fair way possible, only smart people can be smart enough to admit when they didn’t cut it. I can not convince you enough of your own brain power. It would be nice for you to go up against him again
Preparation prior to the debate levels the playing field. A person who isn't "smart" (i.e. quick witted, thinking "on his feet") can outperform a smart debater simply by preparing more in advance. If you are losing debates, you may not be carding enough evidence, writing enough briefs and especially writing and rehearsing blocks. You should be pre-preparing cross-ex trees. Pre-formulating and practicing arguments, counter-arguments and counter-counter-arguments (blocks) until they flow off your tongue with ease. "Smart" = realizing the amount of time for prep is "infinite" prior to the debate compared to the time allotted during the debate. Better prep prior to the debate reduces the mental overhead required during the debate, thus freeing your mind to focus on immediate tactics and overall debate strategy for the round. Hence, the better prepared you are, the "smarter" you will appear during the debate! Great debaters are always thinking about how to improve their debate performance outside the debate. Whether they are working out at the gym, playing a video game, running a cross-country race or reading a 19th century literary poem, they are focused on using that experience to be a better debater. They eat, sleep and drink debate. It permeates everything they do. They understand that there is always someone out there right now working harder at debate than they are and they do everything in their power to offset that disadvantage. They are never focused on "winning" in and of itself, rather they are concerned with demolishing each and every argument they encounter. They hunger and thirst for another argument to dismantle and crave learning and understanding in order to do just that. They understand the weaknesses in every argument they make better than their opponents. They understand that quitting is losing.
