I went up against Xavier at 2018 nats in LD and I’ve never lost a round so badly, he’s an incredible debater

He absolutely is. He demolished Rebecca in this round, and that never happens in finals, not even in regular tournaments.

At the end, he should’ve just said, “I quit. Despite my preparation, despite my desire to be victorious, despite the amount of dopamine levels in my brain FORCING me to continue....I quit. I choose Free Will to the best of my understanding and today I stand before you....and I quit.”
Walk off. Mic drop. Crowd stunned. Legend.
    (But he won anyway...)😁

Both debaters did great but I think it’s pretty obvious Xavier won. This really proves how incredible he is at debating especially because this is the final two in the entire nation. Great job to both of them!

He wrecked her on all points and rounds

Tyler Christensen Except for the fact that none of the points he made actually refute free will.

Kudos to both of these debaters but the aff made a huge mistake in CX. She asked if shes allowed to answer the question and then when the judges said she has to she responded by saying she didn’t understand that. In a judges head that says that the person can’t defend against that question. But again kudos to both of these debaters and I hope they have successful futures.

The problem with determinism is that you can never actually prove it because that means that my coming across it is a determined actions. This violates Godel’s trancendancy principle.

...That's nonsense, and completely misunderstands Gödel

Fatalism is the only thing you can propose to actually negate free will unlike materialistic determinism which contradicts itself

I am not extremely familiar with speech/debate competitions but shouldn't the girl be looking up a little more? At times she basically just reads off her paper for 1+ min at a time.

Biscuitknife In debate, it's completely OK to look at your paper, it doesn't matter how you say it, it's what you say.

Biscuitknife nah she could, it big questios , now for something like oral interpretation no she could not.....🤘🏽

While it is acceptable to look at your script, most judges frown upon it if you do it way too much like she is

depends on the type of debate

    • @bensonfang1868

in debate, every speech is read from your paper, whether prewritten speeches or outlines from your notes, of "flows".

I hate the "speed talk" style. When I used to judge decades ago, only lazy judges fell for the speed talk.

    • @panball6702
      @panball6702 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

the "speed talk" style is called spreading. being that you judged DECADES ago, you should realize that things change. in big questions, spreading shouldn't be used. however, neither of these debaters ended up spreading so i don't see your problem. they speak at about 150-200 wpm, which is a normal debate speaking speed. they're definitely not spreading. also, if you think that's the most important part of the debate over content, maybe you shouldn't be or have been judging.
