- I made this for my Senior Legacy project in my debate class & decided to upload it! Tijienene and Joe were super awesome to act in this for me. Tijienene's main debate event is LD, but we've also done PF together. Joe does Congress.

I am a novice debater and a senior I have my first tournament in two weeks I am so nervous

I'm in LD. Debate changed so- clarification. Value debates are stupid. You should always value morality. Your value criterion should be an action not "justice" so you could say "protecting autonomy" instead. Everything is allowed in LD if you have an impartial judge, not someone who intervenes and decides what can be run and can't. I love theory! There are actually only 2 rules set in stone:
1. Don't go over your speech time
2. Don't stab your oppenent. All other performance responses are fine.
This literally helped me so much. I will be doing ld for the first time this upcoming weekend and feel very good about it now. Thank you!!!!!!

Ld rules allow theory shell counter plan pretty much anything is allowed argument wise
If you are a novice do yourself a favor do not use utilitarianism as your criterion it is one of the most common criterion and many people will have cards against it trust me
Don't use categorical imparitive either

I love this! Idk why, but it was so funny to me! Still very informative. I mainly do PF, but I'm doing LD for the 2nd time in January, and I really think this helped.

I'm a novice and I'm horrible at writing cases. I have the intuition, but does that mean I'll get any better at LD? Has anyone else been hopeless while they were a novice then turned out great at debating?
You just described myself. My first novice tournament I lost every single round, and I lost 60% of my rounds that year. In my sophomore year (in experienced LD) I got second place at my first tournament and went 4-1. Don't give up, as long as you enjoy it you'll improve.

I'm a freshman, I went into LD a novice, my first tournament this year I didn't even break. (It should also be noted that I did not do middle school debate.) I was running things too progressive for Novice Judges. However I switched schools and I just took third in Varsity Regionals and went to State today and got ninth place.
Debate gives me anxiety. :( But this video is helpful. Thanks again Lizzie!

check the rules for you local circuit
@@kristenarnold465 That's in progressive LD, much resembling policy. In traditional LD where it's about creative arguments instead of reading cards as fast as possible, running plans/counterplans is heavily frowned upon.
It changes every 2 months in the public school league! Right now, the nationals topic is Resolved: The United States has a moral obligation to intervene in the political processes of sovereign nations.

I don't have a pc, so I can't make a tutorial for how to edit w/ pc programs, but you already have an editing program called Windows Movie Maker or Windows Live Movie Maker installed into your laptop & I guarantee there are hundreds of tutorials on TH-cam, explaining how to use it!
That's tough. But I would do what you want your friend to do if you were in the same situation. Would you want to know if your significant other was cheating on you? I would! I mean, I'd rather here it from my boyfriend than from a third party, but still, I'd want to know. So, do what you feel is right. Personally, I value truth, even if it hurts.

Okay so, I realize that this was posted about 3 years ago. And I'd just like to point out that I have gone against several Kritiks, counter-plans, topicality arguments and several other commonly known policy arguments. I'm assuming there is no longer a rule against this in LD?
+Ally Pigmon It's a value debate, so there's no need for a plan. If there is no plan, a counterplan makes no sense, because there is no plan to counter. However, that isn't to say that an Affirmative team might not propose a plan as a way of illustrating benefits to the value. In that case, a counterplan becomes an appropriate (though not necessary response).
no there isn't but they aren't common on a local circuit or in lay debate, but are much more common on the circuit.

Counterplans, or plan inclusives are permitted, same with theory, disads and many other stuff you come up with
I talked about it in my "ASK LIZZIE #1" video & I actually JUST commented to someone who was...not excited about my opinion on that. SO, go check that out & maybe I will. I feel like it might illicit too much hate, tho, and come off as confrontational and judgmental.
on the contrary counter plans, kritiks, disads, etc are popularly encouraged in most large debate leagues and even though they are discouraged by more traditional leagues under no circumstances are you not aloud to run them.

Although I hate to contradict OP, you may, in my experience, run any argument or debate device you wish in LD, so long as you have a judge that will buy it. Policy makers and flow judges generally will.
The value should always correspond to what the resolution is questioning. For example any resolution that uses ought, means you value morality because it is asking what is right and wrong. The value criterion should always be a verb, as to have a weighing mechanism.

Counter plans are definitely allowed in LD.
If someone starts bringing up plan's and counterplans all you have to do is bring up that this is ld not policy. Any competent judge will then dismiss those arguments

Personally I believe the Aff has the right to define the round a if needed put limits on the RES
that's not always true as almost every resolution uses ought and there are plenty of other things you can value that correspond with the resolution

counter plans are allowed though, especially in prog LD
A lot of this is invalid, only a few criterion are usable such as util, structural violence, and prag. Also counter plans are perfectly legal. Additionally, winning by theory is definitely possible with a lay-judge. Spreading is discouraged however will not automatically make you lose the round.

During my first few (+) cross ex rounds, I asked for their whole case just to kill time (I kinda figured debate out on my own, I was 1/3 LDer's). If I didn't, the judge would be like, "Why did you forfit 2 mintues of your time? Don't do that." And I'd say nothing. So to summarize my points, DON'T DO THAT!!
