If you want to see the group dynamic when they are arranging I suggest listening to the video of the recording of Evergreen which was their Christmas album. It’s an amazing look at how they work together to get the best sound possible for a song.
John Newton was an owner/captain of a slave ship who in 1742 became a new man in Christ. Eventually giving up on slave trade and returning to England. He wrote AG in 1742. Using the pentatonic scale on which many negro spirituals were created. So, it's very poetic that Pentatonix recorded this beautiful, soaring rendition.
This particular version of the 18th century "Amazing Grace" hymn with the "My Chains Are Gone" refrain was written by a very popular US Christian singer /songwriter, Chris Tomlin. It was written for a British-American historical movie, "Amazing Grace" about the effort to abolish the British slave trade. Tomlin was asked to write a countermelody to combine with the "Amazing Grace" hymn. The soundtrack and the song became really popular in the US Christian music market. I wouldn't be surprised if Kevin brought the song to Pentatonix; he is the most religious of the group and very involved with music ministry. And that's probably why Kevin is featured at the end. Pentatonix commonly features group members who are invested in a particular song; the person who suggests a song (or wrote it in the case of their original songs) often gets featured.
Thanks for a great reaction. I always appreciate a musician’s perspective and I agree 💯! Aside from the obvious vocal talent, arrangements are always 🔥 You might enjoy the behind the scenes video called Recording of Evergreen. It highlights their process while arranging and recording. I found it very interesting Also wanted to mention I really enjoy your intros playing your guitar.
Hello Joker, Perfect song for today. Thanks for you reaction. Your smiles are at just where we expected them to be! The vocals, the solos, the drone of bagpipes at the beginning (I think from Kirstie and Matt), Matt starting so deep and warm. Scott with all that soul. Mitch so smooth in his lower register with those perfect runs and vibratos. Miss Kirstie belting to the sky, Kevin so pure and sweet at the end. The beat boxing, percussion and cymbals clashing from Kevin. The harmonies, the echoes, the crescendo, the PTX wall of sound. All of them singing with such conviction. The setting, The beautiful church. Just wonderful. PTX excels again!! Have you reacted to The Prayer yet? That should be next.
Love your guitar playing intro. Also your little half smiles! For pure harmony bliss please try Run To You (an Avi/Kevin original) that you feel in your soul, no beatboxing. I think you would enjoy their cover of Imagine, with the wall of sound and the bonus of Kevin singing
Most of AG verses were added much later. I believe there are 12 now. Chris Tomlins "My Chains Are Gone...." was added about 15 years ago. Beautiful, excellent.🎵
I recommend "Joyful, Joyful" by them. They sang this cover on their Evergreen Christmas tour last year. I heard them in person. EPIC! If you put "Joyful Pentatonix Evergreen live" in the search bar you will find it. I love to see you smile as you react, even if it is a slight smile. Thank you!
You should react to their over of Imagine. It is beautiful and exactly what the world needs right now. Please check it out. Also, we are used to not seeing much if the video due to Copyright. The fun of these is seeing someone else hear their amazing voices for the first time. Love it!
Well Im back, hope out of hospital for a while...Hope ur felling better and having a great Easter...Beautiful song, beautifully done, Thank you, Blessings
LG
I haven't heard the soundtrack version of this, but Tomlin recorded a version with just his voice and piano and it has the choppy phrasing that they use here, particularly on Kirstie's verse. As a choral singer it was a bit jarring to me at first because the goal for most choral singing is to smooth out the phrases on songs like this, but I've grown accustomed with multiple hearings, and as you say the dynamics are extremely effective.
Spent almost 2 years mostly lying, bc of my back. So didn't actively make music for years. I recorded one Cover song on this channel (that's where this snippet is from). It's in my Thx for 250 subs video. Can find it in my Vlog-Playlist. The song starts around 5 Minutes into the video or so. Hope, I can do some more again and upload something here and there. But really need to practise again😅
So glad your doing more PTX! Here for the journey! Request their upgrade of “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons. ❤️🔥🙏🏼🤘🏼 Sincerely, Pentaholic from Louisiana 🇺🇸
Several live versions of this out there too that are just as impressive. Here’s one from their latest concert tour late last year. th-cam.com/video/X-M0I2a4AHA/w-d-xo.html
Please react to Sound of Music!!! Also if you haven't seen Angelina Jordan please do!! she is amazing. her rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody on AGT is awesome
I'm sorry Iade a typo it should have said Sound of silence!! I'll look for the reactions, I'm a new subscriber so I'm just getting through some of your reactions!!
They could sing the telephone book and it would be OK for me. So this one is OK, but not better. They have far better A Capella songs. I love it when they get more rough and soulful, this one here ist still really good but for my taste its too "sweat and soft" - similar to their christmas album which is also "OK" but definitively produced for the tastes of the masses.

"My Chains Are Gone" is but one of many different versions, evidently. They chose a good one, I'd say.
Thanks for the great reaction.

Amazing Grace ❤️🙌🙌
Grace: Defined as unearned, unmerited favor from God.🎼

If dynamics and arrangements are your thing, check out The Prayer! It is absolutely mind blowing and the background vocals are otherworldly!

Love this group and song. John Farnham with his back up singers do a amazing job of this song
Another great reaction. Thank you! It's always nice to hear a musician's take on these. I'm not sure whose side smile is cuter- Kirstie's or yours 😊
Lol. Guess, I wouldn't pick mine but thanks 😁
Have you ever heard of Mike Dawes? Amazing guitarist. If you haven’t, you HAVE to check him out. He’s out of this world!
I love your reaction videos. I love their harmonies.
Well Im back, hope out of hospital for a while...Hope ur felling better and having a great Easter...Beautiful song, beautifully done, Thank you, Blessings

Hi, stay save! Good, that you are back!
I believe the slave ship owner had his about face when surviving a bad storm.
So moving❤
Recommend their Rather Be, Come Along, and Amazing Grace.
For a real treat to hear Kevin sing… and more. He has his own channel, listen to the cover of Marian Hill’s “Down.”
