Visiting Japan is the best way to learn about Japan. I lived there for 12 months and like you, was very ignorant of the country. I failed to effectively learn the language - my main language teacher taught me a lot about the culture. Therefore, My failure in learning the language was way more offset by appreciating the culture. I could easily live there again (I am an Australian). If you asked me to summarise political and cultural life in Japan inn one sentence, I would say: That it is a capitalist country that lives with socialist values - strange but seems to work....
Most likely fake or lack of arbitrary explanation. In particular, the facts of Japanese history after 1900 are not at least accurately explained. If you refer to this video, you will have a wrong view of Japanese history.
