    After watching old videos of survival documentaries, my first choice would have been the axe. There was a show about a reporter who wanted to learn about surviving in the wilderness and he had an native Canadian Indian teach him that you can survive just with an axe. If needed be I can break the frozen ground looking for roots, build shelters, process games, make traps/spears, and keep warm just by using it because of the weight. The old timers were tough as nail.

      I remember watching that. They took everything they had and soaked their matches even. They ended up making a canoe and paddling out of there. Amazing the ingenuity of some people.

    Fowler correctly assessed that the show is a homestead scenario....to be more specific, it's starting a frontier homestead scenario. This means we need tools and methods to establish it. The good news is that there are no 2-legged threats. Survival tools first: Ferro Rod & Striker, Gransfors Bruks Scandinavian Forest Axe, Arctic Sleeping Bag, 2 Qt Billy Pot. Homestead tools: Silky Bigboy 2000 Folding Saw, Modified SF Shovel, Modified Multi-Tool, Trapping Wire, Fishing Line and Hooks, Take-Down Bow & Arrows.

    A lte answer, I know but I wanted to say that on the rules of 3, there is one thing that a lot of people forget: 3 seconds of inattention! When on outdoor, when working with an axe, with a knife or simply walking on rocks, a lack of attention can become a nightmare. Remember Aaron Ralston.

  • @9999plato

    I would take the glock shovel rather than a saw since it has a small saw with it. Double duty. If I took a bow it would have 2 fu fu arrows and bird heads, 2 field tips and 2 broadheads as part of the kit.

  • @Dan-wo4bx

    • @alaskankare
      @alaskankare 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah, if they were junk, then the military wouldn't have given them to troops to dig trenches. Speaking of which a shovel would be good to go below grade a bit, too. You could dig a dakota pit. Of course, that is all dependent on hard the ground is.

      fowler used it pretty cleaver. he used it to trim off the branches off of the wood he needed. he also used it to skin and cut things and fish. I'm betting money on fowler.

    you want a 2 person, 750 paracord hammock, so you can make 1200 sq ft of 3" mesh netting out of the 9 inner strands. You want one of Chief Aj's slingbows, with 4 of the 6 arrows having 4 tined fishing heads. You want the 5 qt skillet, 2 rations, one of pemmican, one of gorp. you want the 8 treblehooks, the sleeping bag (2, combined into one, for real warmth, bulk and weight dont' matter for this challenge). You want a modified Crunch multitool, with a Silky saw blade to be held in the visegrip of the Crunch. You want the big roll of duct tape, and the modified E tool (Condor) You have to juice the kelp for your carb source. You have to net the fish, and use their heads and guts to bait a bear within 10m of your tree blind, and arrow it. If you do these things, you'll win. If you dont, you'll just starve, like everyone else has, for 4 seasons now.

    I'm not sucking up but I like your choices best.
    The ground bad is a very good choice.
    A good night's sleep is very important.
    Seeing how the contestants use their gear would be great (and the part I like) but based on previous seasons, sadly, the producers don't include much of that film.
    It would really be awesome if THC would post that kind of stuff on TH-cam for us.

    • @UltimateSurvivalTips
      @UltimateSurvivalTips  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good list. Hammock will make your back really cold (in the winter) without something to insulate... Sleeping bag will compress and not keep your back warm. I don't think you can take playing cards... so... if you really want a Hammock, take the EXPED Sleeping Mat I showed in the video. I have used this for winter sleeping in my Hammock and it works FANTASTIC! Otherwise solid list!

      Ultimate Survival Tips Thanks! I tried to cover the most important things. The playing cards came down to my own sanity really. When you're alone, keeping your mind occupied is important. And playing cards would definitely do that for me, as I know many 1 player games that can be done. I'll definitely check out that sleeping mat, I live in MN where we get some serious cold in the winter, so anything that keeps in the heat is always welcomed!

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      EP living without human companionship is a lot harder when you’re starving. I think lack of food and overall discomfort is much more likely to get someone to tap. I won season 4 and lasted 75 days but was only totally by myself for 8 as season 4 was pairs who had to find each other. I’ve done a 36 day Arctic winter solo trek and a tough 19 day solo canoe expedition so, I do have an idea on what it’s like to be totally by yourself.

  • @cadens8530
    @cadens8530 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I guessed it-fowler won. I liked his choices of items except for the multitool I would have probably taken the TOPS Tahoma field knife or the Schrade schf42 with a kydex sheath. I also would have taken a bow instead of his interesting choice of a slingshot. It was Interesting to see that fowler had the most interesting and unique options and he won.

    • @masterofthepinkside
      @masterofthepinkside 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      He made a video explaining why the (significantly modified) multitool and slingshot, For him, and given his other gear and the lack of larger game in the area, both were probably good choices. The key was probably really his superhuman level positivity.

    • @UltimateSurvivalTips
      @UltimateSurvivalTips  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      911LexVegas Indeed. We all have a built in survival backpack of food. It's called your butt! Some of us have a secondary backpack called our belly. Being somewhat fit will help a lot... but if you were carrying maybe 25 lbs (in your built in backpacks) that you could lose - but doesn't effect your ability to stay fit now - I think you are onto something. Good thoughts! -David

      @harper4898 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I thought of that, but to be fair you would be burning more than fat, and risk permanent organ damage..so maybe plan b then...

    • @UltimateSurvivalTips
      @UltimateSurvivalTips  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think a lot depends on the individual person. As I understand it, your body will metabolize the fat first. Muscle will follow. For most of us, not eating for 1-3 weeks will not kill us. About 10 years ago, I was fairly stupid (actually really stupid) and "fasted" for over 40 days, skinny I was, but I was able to continue to generally function... when my body "had it" it let me know. The main issue was not having the energy to exercise... and then when I did exert myself... there was no protein to replace muscle breakdown. It's a web you don't want to get in... But honestly about 4 or 5 days without food... you actually start to feel really good, until you hit various walls... Anyway... its a big topic... please do NOT do what I did. As I often say, don't rough it till you have to... eat 3 healthy meals a day, rest as much as you can and exercise..... LOL

    • @harper4898
      @harper4898 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you did 40 days without food I'm guess you did little activaty, and drank plenty of water, you are lucky you didn't get long term complications, your body will draw on fat first, then fat and proteins (aka muscle) your body also accumulates toxins that are dangerous,
      You don't need three meals a day, in fact until the 20th century most people didn't eat every day,
      Snacking (small meals) through the day is better for you metabolically,
      Fasting can be good for you, in moderation

Mostly the really virtuous guys like smarter every day, and Denzel washington!! Something clicked when i realized why denzel's movies were all so next level good movies. Made me rewatch all his movies hehe. Just sad how jesus has become taboo with the increasing decadence in society. I would like to mentioned that this "laws of 3" are maximum in most people. For example 3 days without water can be if at the end you have a water supply to recover, you can outlive that situation. Problem is that without that water for even 24 hours your body began to fail and you will began to make bad decision that can lead to a premature failing way before than the 3 days

    I agree on ditching the axe. If you have a saw you can get firewood. The axe is heavy. I would rather have the sling shot with 30 ammo (plus any rocks I find) than six arrows. I'm thinking small game is more prevalent and easier to transport back to my camp.

    id studied primitive and basic survival along with escape and evade, ambush, hunting tracking, funneling, combat over 16 years and would love to go on one of these survival shows. i live in mt whitney (eastern sierras in ca) and it is untouched by ppl, is very challenging but youre unable to do certain things like making fires so its almost impossible to train especially in the winter so i stick with the high desert which is also i believe more challenging. being colored blind makes it hard to tell edible and medicinal from toxic not to mention many food allergies lol.

    What's up with paracord anyway? I get that you can process it down into its internal strands for thinner cordage, but compared to the straight up more durable hootchie cord, that seems like a waste of resources. Hootchie cord is about three times stronger than its equivalent thickness paracord, and you can braid it into a much thicker line if you need to. Besides, hootchie cord's thinness means you can simple bring a whole lot more of it along than you could with equivalent break-point paracord.
    Standard hootchie cord is rated the same as para 550 after all

    In my opinion, survival is about having the skills and tools to survive an unexpected time in the wilderness long enough to be rescued.
    It's not about camping, in my opinion, because you have total control of your resources in that case.

    If you have an axe choosing a multi-tool over a 'survival' knife actually makes a lot of sense. Personally you'll never catch me out there without my belt knife, but you'll never see me on a show like "Alone" either. As for Patagonia rather than Vancouver Island, at least they won't have to worry about getting eaten all the time! There are mountain lions, but, unlike on Vancouver Island, they're rare, and bears & wolves won't be a threat at all.

      the net size allowed was just 6 x 25 ft, and it had to be 2" mesh. for season 4, it was reduced to half that size, 5 x 15 ft, 1.5" mesh, nearly useless. FAR better to take a 2 person hammock, made out of 750 paracord, access the 9 inner strands and make 1200 sq ft of 3" mesh netting. If you want 1.5" netting, just fold the net back on itself and tie every other mesh. But best try first for the bigger fish. Having 8x as much netting is a wonderful thing. It only takes a week of half a day each to make the 1200 sq ft of such netting, and you can hang each day's production as a gill net, catching more fish each day.

    No axe? Mors Kochanski would laugh at you. Throughout history, axe has proven to be the most superior in wilderness living. If the competition is to see who can outlast the rest, then you will be severely handicap once winter conditions comes. That's why the Native Americans regards the axe their most important tool.

      Ax is good on perfectly healthy guy(s) on the short term, but in survival situation, ax is not a good choice because (depends on the person too) using this require a bit more strength, stamina and focus to swing it, which is bad one to have in the long run.

    "By design, we're not made to go long periods of time without companionship" that holds specially true for David in a place like the Bogota airport.
    Now, I really don't know what type of terrain they were dropped onto, but in the images I see some plantlife. Patagonia for the most part is a semi-arid steppe, with the landscape dominated by the Andes as you go west. The southwesternmost part though and some valleys scattered along the mountains are green and lush though, similar to what we saw in the first two seasons, however brush is way more common than huge conifer forests. So the ellection of wood processing tools will be dictated to where they're dropped. I wouldn't take an axe as well, though, a saw and a good stout knife can take care of almost anything they'd be put against (IMHO). But again keep in mind that talking about "Patagonia" is like talking about "Alaska" as it's a very extense region that has different enviroments that would require different survival skills to thrive in.
    I realy don't see how the wildlife is going to pose any threats, since cougars (the biggest predator in most of non-jungle South America) aren't really common, foxes are shy and small and there are no such things as wolves or bears in that region (nor anywhere in Argentina, for that matter), maybe some wild boars or wild cows? But again, those are also rare. Actually the animals that always scared me the most and still to this day make me carry a big knife everytime I head into a rural area here are the guard dogs that the local ranchers keep. Vicious beasts I tell ye.
    Now the real enemy down in Patagonia? For me it was always the wind. Good Lord, the wind. When cold enough it'll suck the very life out of you. I'm a really hot blooded individual and I can still remember how cold I felt the last time I stood in the patagonian wind at night......in the summertime. Maybe in the forested areas it's a little bit more endurable, but up in the mountain ranges, or in the actual steppe, it's just maddening, think of the desert wind all loaded up on sand but cold. Also storms can be really sudden and when it pours it's cold and unforgiving.
    So that's my 2 cents on this preview, I'd love to get the actual location and go check it out myself (specially since this would be much more cost effective than Vancouver Island for me ^_^).
    Keep up the good work, Dave.

      The axe use would depend on the experience of the user,
      I'd rather go saw and knife and baton, (but I think the shovel guy has plans on using it as an axe...)
      Do you want to survive for months, then a saw,
      Wanna survive for year then an axe,
      Btw, what would stop you making your own bow and arrows etc
      I think I could do the show with less than ten item,

  • @B22RAW
    @B22RAW 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would bring a 1.Water Filter 2. Fishing Kit 3. Medical Kit 4. Fire Kit 5. Axe 6. Multitool with sharpening stone 7. Tent 8. Mess kit 9. Wool Blanket 7ftx7ft 10. 30-100ft of Paracord Rope. Now I can Survive anything and go anywhere in the World and be safe All Year Long and never go Hungry, Cold or Feel threatened by Big Game or Humans. After making a Camp, Gathering Food, I would make a Bow and Arrow and then continue to make Larger Food Rations available for Trekking across Great distances. XD That is how Civilizations were made. :p

    Here's the thing about taking a bow. The deer there are protected so you only have wild boar available, which aren't as stupid, fragile, or numerous as deer. You have to film everything you do, and you cannot leave your territory. Hunting is a prestige activity in hunter/gatherer societies, not a subsistence activity.

    DAVID'S BACK!! WOO!!

  • @user-ci2mn1oy3w
    @user-ci2mn1oy3w 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I would never take, the axe, saw, paracord, cookpot, gillnet, belt knife, ferrorod, fishing kit,sleeping bag, bow.
    I'd take the slingbow, the saw-edged shovel, the modified Crunch mutitool, the reflective 12x12 tarp, the reflective tyvek bivy, the two person cotton rope hammock, the snarewire, the big roll of duct tape, the block of salt the 2 lbs of pemmican. the hammock makes camp cordage, assembles the pontoon outrigger raft, and makes oveer 1000 sq ft of 2" mesh netting.
    The duct tape and half of the tarp make the shelter. The tape , the coveralls and the backpack make the pontoons for the outrigger raft. The tape and parts of the tarp make 2 pairs of pants and some food storage bags. A chunk of the tarp and a basket make a 5 gallon water storage container. The bivy gets used to line a stone boiling pit for the water purification effort, twice per week, until I can make the pottery.
    The shovel gets a full length handle, as well as a handle to make it a 2 handed axe, a paddle, and an adze, pick, hoe/rake, and without the handle it's a big knife, trowel, prybar, and SKILLET. The 2 file blades in the Crunch let me sharpen the saw teeth, shovel and knife blade of the Crunch, as well as drill the holes in the replacement shovel handles.
    The multitool cuts the spring wires off of the Judohead blunt arrow tips and converts them into treblehook trotlines. Pieces of tarp and tape make bait bags for the chumline, which brings fish to my seine area from all over the lake. The salt helps preserve fish and bear meat if I get the later. It helps me stay properly hydrated and helps me choke-down enough cambium and fish to keep going
    All I need as a shelter is a winterized tent, made of tarp, tape, poles and debris.. In the last weeks, it's heated with hot rocks, not a fire.
