Great setup!! I have been putting my kit together and I included a Hobest brand Solar charger, CAT brand Tourniquet, 15" Sven brand Saw, a couple glow sticks. In my first aid kit I added mini bottle of super glue, some alcohol wipes, several pairs of Nitrile rubber gloves.
I think this is one of the best videos on youtube for a lighter kit.
I bought this same exact bag based off of this video. I has rode on 4 wheelers across pastures and side by sides. It goes where ever I go and it has not let me down yet. Good bag for the money!!
Great video. Suggestions on head lamps. A single AAA lamp is great for ultralight hiking, but a 300 lumen Rayovac from Menards or 225 lumen Ozark Trail from Walmart with three AAA batteries gives you a more practical headlamp. And you can still use the low power setting for a much longer lasting light. If you want to save weight, ditch the regular LED flashlight or replace with a second head lamp and just carry the headlamp in your hand like a flashlight with a lanyard when you need it. Hands free for night hiking, setting up a tent with two hands, or emergency car repair. If you are going to occupy your hand with a flashlight, it should be 1,200 lumens or better. Even when I'm not in a survival situation, the hands free ability of a head lamp (mine fits my hat great) keeps it accessible and I get a light but I can still cook, build a fire, gather armloads of wood. It also is always pointed right where I am looking.
Great job David! I like that you included documents and cash. It's what we recommend in the Red Cross yet few people include in their kits. I need to get one of those snug packs!

Thank you so much for doing all of this, I am new to learning what to do and would never have thought about 90% of all that you have shown, a city person never had any need. We all sense that something is up and one would be foolish not to educate themselves. I started a bug out bag a little while back, have to get a few of those bivvy bags! I didn't know they existed!
Great video, and excellent choice of items. I especially like the mix of a .22 and the slingshot. A lot of folks don't think about the fact that even a .22 is not all that quiet. But with a little practice a slingshot can keep you in rabbit and squirrel for days!!!!

I've tried sling bags and shoulder bags but I've come to the conclusion that for me at least, they hold the weight poorly and kill your shoulder. A backpack with 2 straps minimum is ok, a contoured and padded suspension system is just so much more comfortable and will help your morale in a bad situation. Its not hard to find low profile packs these days with integrated harnesses, removable/tuck-away waist belts, aluminum stays, HDPE frame sheets and so on while maintaining a level of discreetness, versatility, and everyday comfort. If the bag I'm using has molle, I don't stick a whole bunch of pouches on the outside because I want to keep as many things close to my center of gravity and hugging my back.
I think that the whole fat slingpack craze would die off when people actually have to carry their packs. Just going from the home to the car on a daily basis with a slingpack is no big deal. Traveling around all day with one on foot, 5 pounds including the pack, is fine but at the upper limit. Its not so much the weight, but how the weight is carried. Yes, people tend to pack these slingbacks so tight and there isn't much room for water. On a hot day of high activity, you'll go through so much water and sweat.
The Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack has a waist strap, so actually most of the weight goes on your waist not your shoulder making it more bearable over a long time. But yes a good back pack would still be more comfortable over a long period of time (walking all day in a survival situation).
as long as you are in shape, working out and that includes working out with your bag like I do, you'll be fine. if all you do is make a bug out bag and the only time you use it is when it's time to use it you'll be fucked
I have come to the same conclusion. I've wasted money on different sling packs and they aren't good for carrying much of anything. They look cool. Tactical dad sort of thing. But in a real emergency I want a plain civilian backpack
Looks like a cool set up, a change I would consider making though is adding a small first aid kit. Anywhere you use guns, knives, and fire, there is potential for injuries.
Also, I suggest breaking your MRE down and just pack the food items out of it you want. A lot of an MRE is just air, plastic, and wasted space. For long matches in the field with the army where we carried 2-3 days worth of MREs with us, you could fit 3 meals in the place of one by doing that.
I really like this kit, brother. I really respect how you draw that hard line between ''wilderness living/bushcraft'' and ''I gotta GTF out of here!'' I see more and more people blur the whole thing into blanket statement ''survival' now.
You kind of snap things back to reality instead of indulging the survival fantasy we are all guilty of sometimes. In truth, if my jeep goes off the road and I'm stuck there with my wife alone at home waiting, I'd rather get a map and boogie on out than sit there rolling pemmican, haha!

Wow, what a kit! 14lbs though...did you know that ultralight hikers who do the PCT and AT etc, carry about half that as a base weight? And that includes spare clothes, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, washkit. And they're out walking for months.
Best lightweight bugout/72 hr kit I've seen.
FYI you can use a double wall bottle to boil water if you punch a hole in it to release all the pressure. i like to get it nice and secure if nothing to grip it like a vise or between stuff bury it leaving just an inch of the bottom above ground then get a sharp rock or fixed blade knife or other sharp strong object and whack the other end with a hammer, or stick to puncture.
worked great when i went on an impromptu hiking/camping trip and did not have my gear with me so i got what i could cheap from dollar store on the way and they only had cheap double wall bottles lol. ;)

That is a darn nice kit! I like that you give tips on, "Increase warmth, do this...reduce weight, do this". I'd spend the money and get a Suunto Clipper compass rather than that buttn compass. Also ditch that folding knife for a real SAK. You can get USGI wire saws; they are more bulky but come with extra blade and you can buy extras. I'd forget the wire saw all together if you carry a Silky/Laplander.

Well done. Well thought out kit. Usually, guys just stuff what ever bits and bobs they can grab from their mother's kitchen. Some times, you can tell they've never actually used the item in question or it's too small or light to be of real use in the field. My challenge for videos like this: Go out in the woods for 72 hours and use what you have. Field test your kit and come back and let us know how you did and what was truly useful.

At least you showed a shelter system , i a emergency i think haveing shelter is important and the bivvy as well as the tent and sleeping bag . I use a ultralight tent this gives me a great advantage a dry wind free and bug free place to decide what to do in the situation i can sit up in it sleep and cook all out of rain bugs and wind wind can be a killer all by itself my tent 2 lbs freestanding has saved me many times from being miserable 45 mph constant wind for days on end thunderstorm snow you name it it's saved me. I use i think they don't make it now but one lighter now is a Terra nova solar competition 1p tent .
Thank you for this well thought out bag system. Sunglasses are also great to protect your eyes from tree wig damage as you move through the bush. Change out the cheap chinese knife for a real Victorinox pocket knife and keep it in your POCKET on a lanyard with you Whistle, Main Compass, Fire Steel, Flashlight and Bandana (On-Body kit). Great Sliky saw and Mora knife. Your layered sleep system is great logic, the Shemagh can be used as an additional torso wrap. The breathable SOL Escape Bivvy (the best available) is far better for over night because over night non-breathable Mylar bag condensation means you wake up wet. Survival tin is great as an additional filter water collection container. Food is reasonable, I have added Glucose tablets as an energy boost I shake loose freeze dried rice into my survival tin to fill every little void and this becomes meal extender Thank you, Greg

Might also want to consider 1 or 2 XXL garbage bags, i.e., Xmas tree disposal bags. They are HUGE!! Another item I have is a very small plastic pencil sharpener. Makes perfect tinder from small twigs.
Nice pack. More like a haversack, system. But, the amount of gear is phenomenal. You could last on a weekend trip, with all of that. I would have thrown in a pair of underwear and socks, maybe a long sleeve tee shirt and a travel toothbrush and toothpaste, just the small size. But, it's a great idea. Thank you.
This may be a year old reply, but another video that I like. I have a Maxpedition sling bag that I have fairly close to being packed like yours. It also has molle on it for attaching more stuff to it. One big difference that I have than just about everyone is my Brunton Pocket Transit. I absolutely don't like the button compasses because in my experience, they are just to unreliable (affected by too many natural things). Nice bag, and I'll probably update mine. The wire saw that I don't use as a saw can be made into a snare if you need. I have a .357 mag in mine with hollow points and bird shot. That kinda' covers both sides of needing little and needing big.
Nice little bag, for all you neigh sayers think running off the road and hiking out in the mountains or vehicle disabled in the swamp or in my area tornado ice storm etc. NIce to grab a bag and know your id money etc is there and available. Like the fact I can take it a improvised shelter culvert small cave or bathroom for tornado emergency. Remember you are not always at a preferred shelter when a storm gets bad or you just need to get to your secure site.
Great kit. I recently made a kit just like this for a friend who goes trekking in Mongolia. I would add a lightweight tarp, mylar blanket and a clear plastic tarp for cheap/easy shelter building as an alternative to the 3 x 55gal trash bags. Perhaps you can just carry one trashbag along with the items I mentioned. Great kit. I learned something from this video thanks.
Re: Head Lamps; I just picked up a pack of head lamps from my local Costco store, if you have one near you. They are a little bigger than the one you showed but it has both red light and white lights on it, both LED to keep the size and weight down. Each light had 3 power settings to extend batt. life if needed. I will get back to you on the name of them but I love them.

There's a lot of improvement that could go into the bag like breaking down the MRE'S and getting rid of the junk items and just keeping the food. This will allow you to carry more food or other items.

Well presented and it is applicable for most scenarios well done my friend.
David I also have/use the UTG Messenger bag for my Get home bag. I've had it about 2 years now and it's held up great so far. I did have a nylon carry strap sewn to the bag for more of a "quick grab and go" handle, similar to the handle found on the Maxpedition Fatboy. For my needs I do not need all the items you have in your bag here but every person and situation is different. These are ALL solid choices although I will say I've had no luck whatsoever with the "finger ring saw" as many I've seen break even when being used for extremely light weight cutting. I'd ditch it and just go with the foldable saw you showed a bit later. Great stuff man!

If you're still looking for a better headlamp, look into the Kinetics Vizion.
- It's water PROOF. (not water resistant) You can find videos of people testing it out underwater.
- The design is very simple. It's just a barrel with an LED inside.
- Large On/Off switch is easy to find with gloves on, or with cold fingers.
- The inner barrel can be removed, turning it into a lamp that shines light in all directions. This actually allows me to leave my LED lantern out of my bag altogether, further lightening my load.
- For the red light there's a red lens that flips up and down. Having a red light is important to me because you can still see at night in situations where you don't want to be seen by others. The only options are either a) don't use a light, or b) carry expensive and bulky night vision.
For survival, camping, hiking, bushcrafting, it's the best headlamp I've found. Simple, durable, waterproof, versatile. For ultralite hikers (through hikers) I recommend the Petzl E02 P2 e+LITE (lightweight, but much shorter battery life; and because it's so lightweight it's also a good backup); but for survival I recommend the Kinetics Vizion.

Food, water, firearm, ammo, and the 5 Cs all under 14 lbs?...impressive! Gotta work on mine, I'm trying to keep my kit under 25 lbs.
It's pretty cool that it can hold so much stuff, it could probably hold more stuff then my backpack
when using packs like this one, or any backpack in general, it's better to tighten the straps untill the pack is snug against your body, this will give you the proper support and won't hurt your back as much. when you wear a loose strapped backpack it can create spinal issues and can also increase your risk of snagging on objects that you wouldn't want to get caught on. also if you are afraid of not being about to remove you pack quick enough in a situation that requires you to do so, there are many bags out there that offer quick detachable straps, which allow you to wear your pack snuggly and also get it off quickly
Love the kit! However, I find using a sling pack isn’t as well as a backpack. Usually it wears down one one shoulder and when going through the environment it gets caught up on things. Also, I have found myself quickly moving quickly and one hand controls the bag while the other controls the limbs from the trees or a flashlight. I have the 5:11 Havoc 30. Most don’t know what’s inside. I upgraded to a headlamp with a red lens for preserving night vision.
Good video. I have the same bag with a similar setup for my wife's trunk get home bag kit. I added a first aid kit to hers and some other subtle differences. I always enjoy your videos. Well explained.

Nice 72 hour kit. I'd upgrade the lights just in case it turns out to be an extended camp situation. Zebra, Fenix, Foursevens, Thrunite, etc. Some models can run for 800 hours [a month!] on one battery. We all have different priorities, so your mileage may vary. Most people don't want to spend over $100 on a flashlight.
John Campbell for a bug out bag always go a full size 2d or 3d led maglite. tough as nails. reliable. bright. excellent 360metre beam throw made in the usa unlike fenix, led lenser, thru night etc. maglites make a great weapon
smallenginedude71 I have an OLD 4 cell police Maglite that has been bouncing around in my trucks for nearly 30 years. I upgraded to the LED bulb module a few years ago and that bad boy just keeps going. It's bent, beaten, most of the paint is missing... but it goes with me everywhere. And yeah... it has been used in self defense a time or two.

Just watched your video and also recently subscribed to your channel. What I found interesting is there was nothing that you packed that you did not need.
So many times people pack everything but the kitchen sink and they need to Remember " Ounces equal pounds and pounds equal pain ".
I also have a Maxpedition bag very similar to what you have and I bought it basically as a " Gray Man Bag ".
You and I made very similar choices.
Only 2 that I found different was Firearm selection as I went with a Ruger Mark IV 22/45 and I have a small solar , Crank and battery powered SW/ AM/ FM/ WB radio and it is very small.
Firearms are personal preference and I like having the radio so I can get weather updates if my wife and I are trapped in the mountains during a snow storm, Or God forbid if it is some sort of terrorist or invasion or Govt power grab then the SW may come in handy.

Thanks for the video. I'm a short women with a bad back, so this pack is going to be brilliant for me as a base. As I'm in the UK I'm going to have to add more clothing (ie rain gear), but other then that it's a grand set up. The only two things I can see missing are tech (ie emergency radio) and something for pets if you have them. You might want to add photos of loved ones and pets, as they improve the survival psychology rates no end.
I didn't go through all the comments but I'm sure this has been mentioned but you refer to the extra ammo storage as clips but in fact they are not clips they are magazines other than that great video keep posting more i really like your videos

Did my duty in the 80s... believe it or not, back then we used the words "Clip" and Magazine interchangeable. I was not alone in this. So I have a bad habit from time to time of saying "Clip." Now I know there are those who have made this an issue because of comments in the past by some political leaders who would like more gun control. But that is not me. I'm just an old Marine - who yes, used to from time to time use clips to load .223 rounds in his magazines. I will do my best in the future to call magazines, magazines. Thanks bro. ;)

For the last thirty years or so, I've had a 'hobby' of making go-bags. Called them Survival Kits back in the day.
I like your redundancy in the fire 🔥 and water 💦 areas.
I also include some type of dedicated spear or harpoon blade in my bags as a redundant cutting/ hunting tool. Just food for thought.
I love your bug out bag and the gear you have in it. You showed that one knife and I know it can't be your primary knife as it don't look that reliable in the forest or in an urban environment. I use to carry my Buck long blade knife with me when I was living in San Bernardino, California and I still have that knife and treasure it so much, even though I have a Schrade long blade full tang knife which I have with my utility belt now.
FYI - Kleen Kanteen does NOT recommend boiling in their containers...Cloth pronounced "she -maw", good tip on taping the lighter I have had one break on me. Good information, I like the redundancies, especially the Contractor grade garbage bags, thanks

pretty awesome beg I think a dark green school backpack will do pretty good so people do not think you are soldier regular camping stuff is also good thing for survival get your own stuff to it and then you got the ultimate kit
Well, it may do well for a few long months to a few short years and theyre designed to carry heavy stuff. But they are suseptible to signficant damage out in the wilderness.

You're probably not a smoker which is a good thing but from my dirty cigarette smoking habit, I need to work on. I would recommend a Bic lighter the wheels don't ever fall off also they will float on water which I believe the one you have will to but they last longer.

Don’t just use amazon links go to local stores or get items that are pretty much the same but are cheaper
For a head lamp look at the streamlight sidewinder 2 it is pricy but it takes multiple battery sizes and can be used different ways

Interesting items in your kit. Food for thought for sure. May have been mentioned below in the comments, but you mention when unpacking the metal tin that the lid could be used as a cooking surface, but the silicone gasket would likely melt and or contaminate anything you cooked on it.
Not to mention they sound very plasticity when he taps them. I would use a rock boil method if I had nothing else, but since you already have a KleenKanteen and a metal cup it seems pointless to damage a water tight container.
Personally, I have most of what is in it, and really did not intend to put one in my my kit to save any weight I could.

Hello David, that is a great kit you put together. The wire saw, I would change that for a Gibble saw, its same principle but it one that Army medics use. A really good bug out bag book is "Realistic Bug Out Bag" by Gunner Morgan. It is available on Amazon. Lists a lot of really good information that I found pretty relevant to BOB's. Having read a lot of books on bug out bags this is one of the better ones. Good luck.

Great stuff! I watched your video on the 25 lb bag and it got me thinking about weight management in my gear bags, this just upped the anti! Two days ago I got the UST messenger bag to use as an EDC/work bag. I've been trying different items in it to see what I can fit. More great ideas from you...thanks.

Great video mate. Here is a question for you... get home bags are by and large kept in a vehicle and left there. Would you keep the food bars and your weapon in your get home bag as it sits in your vehicle 24/7? Food melts and guns warm under extreme heat... and then there is the risk of theft of course.
I have a similar set up using a maxpedition jumbo versipak, along with a large mil surplus fanny pack, for an urban get home bag.
The 1 thing that caught my attention was the 22... everyone forgets about the 22. IMHO is a necessary survival tool. Easy to carry, extra ammo does not weigh a ton and good for small game... unless you plan on setting up a base camp and processing big game, small critters is going to be your main protein source. A 5.56 or 7.62 is, no pun intended, overkill for small critters. Everyone wants a automatic rifle, completely forgetting extra ammo of any amount weighs a LOT and is not practical by any means.
Break down the (several) MRE, having dealt with them for a number of years in the Army, most of that bag is crap... You can use several and double or triple your food supply in the same space. Get rid of the bulk of the extra packaging and also save some weight.
