  • THIS IS MONDAY.
    Today was a long one. Struggling with getting lambs to drink on an engorged mom, delivering lambs, tagging and recording lambs, bottle feeding EVERYWHERE, fighting and prepping for more cold weather, and of course, chores.

    thank you so much for this! I had such a garbage weekend being too busy, too stressed, making stupid mistakes then having to fix them and hope I'd not done irreparable damage. My spirits were at an all time low, and not how I wanted to end my first round of lambing this year. At the end of the day everything turned out OK and my mistake was no harm done but I was grumpy and beating myself up big time. But this cheered me up so much, well actually you and your enduring spirit and even when things are hard you keep smiling. I love it and I feel good about going out there today, checking my next lot of girls and getting ready to start round 2 of lambing soon. I just wanted you to know what huge value your hard work in not only doing what you do has, but the effort you make to share it. Much love and thanks

    Great job, fun to watch. A couple comments. 1) When walking with the lambs to the jug, try carrying the lambs by their front legs and hold them at your side with the lambs rear legs slightly touching the ground. Then walk away from the ewe with the ewe following you and her lambs. I find this works very well because the lamb's rear end and legs are at a "natural" level and she can readily smell their tail and rear. I find they follow much easier and it is easier on your back from stopping, bending, and crouching. 2) Give any ewe that requires any lambing assistance including pulling, big teats, low milk, lambs on opposite ends of the barn a "demerit" in your records. Take these demerits into consideration when choosing replacement ewe lambs. You will eventually find yourself doing much less work at lambing. Have a good day and keep the videos coming, they are fun to watch.

    Hi Sandi
    i have been following your utube channel with great interest. it is lots of fun watching someone else dealing with problems so well that I have had! I am an older producer (almost 70) living in northern Ontario. A few ideas for dealing with ewes with very large teats - sometimes I bottle feed and after the lamb is sucking well on the bottle, place the bottle under the ewe at the right height and then the lamb is able to transfer onto the ewe. Sometimes I place the lamb on it front knees under the ewe. if I happen to be there at the correct time, I have placed the lamb on the teat before the lamb is standing so that it is low enough. maybe these ideas might help. Good luck with the rest of your lambing!
    Anne

    • @SandiBrock
      @SandiBrock  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did treat mine... I'm not entirely sure if thats what I'm dealing with here or not... I wonder if they were tight on feeder space before they were shorn, and they get pawed by the other ewes trying to get a spot. Or, it could be lice...

    Question: what do u do to the tails while processing the lambs. I’ve always wondered?

    • @Storm-bp3fm
      @Storm-bp3fm 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Liz Hackler they dock them which means they put a very tight rubber band that cuts the circulations off and the tails come off. Is much more better for the lambs than leaving the tail on or cutting it off. The rubber bands allow them to get rid of the tail without an open wound that you would get if you cutting it off.

    • @SandiBrock
      @SandiBrock  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should keep better records of the assisted ones, but by the time I process them, I can't really keep them straight. I really just focus on bad udders.

    • @jamieshields9521
      @jamieshields9521 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sandi Brock I know when I work at piggery we kept records on mother sows with fallowing details any had problems we look from start to finish n determined to keep breed or move them on. It was important to strip sow teats to see if she could handle average of 10 pigglets. Some couldn’t other could but lack of producing milk so those go on different diet to build up condition. This help piglets gain weight for weaning. Interesting in animal rearing.👍

    • @SandiBrock
      @SandiBrock  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmmmmmm....
      With a group this size, most definitely like natural better. The lambing part has been fairly spaced out so I can keep up with processing lambs and moving pens, and all the other chores through the day. Its just the fact that I'd typically be done lambing by now. Gets overwhelming as I get tired...
      For smaller groups when we start back on the land, I like the CIDRs to tighten the group up and know the event is short lived.
