- My La Sportiva TX4 boots have done really well over the last 2.5 years but now I want to test a new pair of scrambling/approach shoes or boots.
I tried Salewa Wildfire 2s but they're a bit narrow for me.
If you have any suggestions let me know in the comments.
I'm looking for:
~Dedicated scrambling/approach footwear
~Goretex or non-Goretex
~Sticky on rock, inc in the wet
~Not too rigid
~Suitable for grade 1-3 scrambles in the UK
If you're new to scrambling, I recommend La Sportiva TX4 for your first pair of footwear, they're really sticky, flexible and long-lasting.

Need to give the Sportiva TX4 GTX a whirl, can’t say I’ve ever read a negative review, and there’s some good deals out there for them too.
I've worn loads of shoes/boots over the years and they're by far the grippiest I've experienced.
Love my Salewa Men's Alp Trainer 2 Mid GORE-TEX boots
I've got narrow feet and have found the tx guides to work much better for me than the Tx4's. They're slightly stiffer so better for small edges and the lower profile/pointer toe means they feel a lot more precise. Closer to a climbing shoe imo and they feel great on more technical stuff.
TX4 GTX, hands down the best approach shoe I’ve had. When these wear out I will get another pair, and another, and another unless they change how they make them and the quality drops.
If I’m sticking to simple grade 1 routes I might take my Inov 8 trail shoes instead for lightness, but when I need a rigid sole to get a toe in the TX4s are unmatched in my opinion.
Salewa Wildfire,Salewa Crow (light alpine boots ,bit stiff )La Sportiva Tx4
La Sportiva - Trango Tech for winter (or just when I want a boot) and TX Guide in summer/shoe mood
I love my Trango Techs, very versatile and comfy.
Very good
INOV-8 Roclite G 345, amazing grip on dry rock, I rarely scramble in the wet so cant comment on performance on wet rock.
Boulder x is really good. Quite narrow though and not waterproof
Comfy for a wider foot!
I've seen a few people recommend these. Thanks!
Tx4 mid grtx. Nothing better
I swear by my Scarpa Mescalito boots. I previously wore Mammut Redburn Pro shoes but found them uncomfortable on longer walk ins.
I have the Mescalito TRK boots; quite firm underfoot compared to what I'm used to, good for walking in mud/wet conditions. I've never tried the regular Mescalito.
I found Salewa quite heavy and not so grippy in the wet. I'm currently using La Sportiva TX Guide which are REALLY grippy, especially so in the wet with Vibram MegaGrip
I'm not a huge fan of the Salewa Wildfire 2s, gonna publish review of them soon.
There's jack all bar the TX4 boots
TX Guides seem to have good reviews but maybe too narrow for my flippers.
Have you tried the new Arcteryx vertex alpine which has vibram climbing rubber rather than vibram megagrip?
Vibram XS Flash is a funny choice, it's not a performance climbing rubber (intended for rental shoes) and not optimised for the outside I don't think. However, Arcteryx must know what they're doing, it should be good in the dry, not sure about the wet..
Never tried those, thanks for the suggestion.
Why dont you get these ones resoled if you like them ?
Hopefully I'll have a video coming soon about resoling.
