A Rarely Scrambled Grade 2 Route Hidden in Plain Sight
Enjoyed watching me on Tapia Llwydion? Buy me a coffee: buymeacoffee.com/thebaldscrambler . This scramble starts so well over good quality rock with decent holds, a nice crack climb and some exposure too - it deserves a respectable 2-star fun rating but only up to a point. Join me as I explore this rare scramble that's a stone's throw from the most popular path up Cadair Idris.
Tapia Llwydion is a grade 2 scramble that few talk about, even though thousands walk past it every year. This is the most direct route to the summit of Cadair Idris, so let's see what it's all about.

Did this route today , exactly as you described steep start boggy low and a nice scramble over slippery rocks , sadly low cloud made for no views from the top and the shelter was welcome to have lunch out of the wind. I’d recommend poles for the descent to take the weight off of your knees. Great video 👍🏾

Same grade 2S but we scaled a couple of steep walls which were definitely grade3, the left rib is longer and more sustained scrambling than the right rib, there are a many lines to choose next time you do Bryant’s gully please take the left rib if visibility is decent you will not be disappointed

I have the wildfire gtx first Gen and I wore them out outdoors in the good sense. Took me probably 10 years to wear them out, lots of scrambling, 100s of miles of hiking. Never got 1 blister. The old ones had vibram soles and I never had an issue with slipping. I just got the new version with the Pomoca soles so I hope they don't cause too much of an issue. (I don't like change lol) They do look narrower in the toe (I have wide feet) so I'm probably gonna put my shoe stretchers in for a bit to widen up the toe box. Hopefully that helps Good review mate, that looks like a good scramble that I wish I was near.

Also, in terms of great beginner scrambles - the top of Watkin Path? That's a nice easy one - again, best with clear conditions (sadly, we had clag both times). Also good, easy scrambles on Great Gable, Helvellyn (i.e. the summit scramble, obviously Striding Edge doesn't necessarily qualify as a beginner scramble) and, for real beginners or kids, the Mickledore mini-scramble on the way up Scafell Pike is lots of fun without any real risk. And another vote for Hall's Fell Ridge too - but stay on the ridge, don't try to go round the left or right sides as there are sheer drops and the rock gets slippy in the wet. I motored up nicely in the dry, back when I barely had any scrambling experience, but a few years ago very nearly slid off, when trying to edge around the left side for some stupid reason!

  • @LeonieClaire-s6q
    @LeonieClaire-s6q 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

Went here recently for the first time. Agree that in fairly clear conditions it would be a great intro to scrambling, but when we were there it was very low cloud for the first few hours - did the whole scramble through thick mist and although most of it was highly enjoyable, towards the summit we strayed into some harder stuff - which was doable but very slippy and required gi-normous steps up in a couple of places which we struggled with and ended up having to sort of squirm up on our stomachs! - later, looking down, we realised there were easier options. So, I would suggest beginner scramblers save it for a day with good visibility so they can pick a good line - or go with someone who knows the route options. Loved the mountain though, especially the views from the summit once the weather cleared. But as always, mate, great video! 👍

I've been to N. Wales loads of times and have never experienced anything like it. What I suspect is that there are quite a few English words that don't have an Welsh equivalent and what people hear is a mixture of English and Welsh and assume that the speaker is changing to Welsh. Most of it is probably confirmation bias.

The biggest risk to people going up Tryfan is their fitness…preparation and planning prevents piss poor performance, don’t underestimate this mountain, just because you have been up Snowdon does not qualify you for the rest of the peaks. The weather can change in a heartbeat in Snowdonia and when, as it does, you’re caught on Tryfan the whole dynamic changes. Get some knowledge and get some experience. If you haven’t even done Crib Goch in a variety of weather then you’re not ready for Tryfan

    • @thebaldscrambler

Personally I think Moel Siabod's ridge is a good introduction to scrambling, followed by Y Gribin (Glyders) and then the south ridge of Tryfan. Alot fo ppl jump straight onto the North Ridge but it's quite an undertaking, esp if the cloud rolls in.

It was very enjoyable. I think the slipepry path near the river was probably the most dangerous part :-).

I think Bulder X Mid would be better choice

Got a pair of those on order. Will do a review once I've done some mileage on 'em.

Hi, a suggestion, it would have been easier to follow you on those long shots if you had worn brighter clothing.

Thanks for the tip. I've been trying to reposition the drone more often recently so I can mix close and long shots from various angles etc, as well as clips from my new 360 camera.

I agree, its an easy scramble. I've done it many times, but to make life a little more interesting, I've climbed directly up the cliff face to the top, too. Lot of exposure, but real fun. This mountain looks foreboding from the A5 travelling west. Particularly that cliff face. Descending down the ridge ( due east) is tougher than the normal route up.

Me too, it was so quiet on this one. Makes a nice change from the routes in the north.

Great to see you bag this one mate. I had a sneaky suspicion you’d enjoy it. Aside from a loose scree type push to the top of the penmaenbach summit, the arête itself is quality and always quiet too. Add to this the location, the fact the scramble starts at ground level, the short approach and it being right above the sea, it’s an absolute gem in my opinion. Great drone footage too, really captures the surroundings perfectly 👍🏻

Thanks, I enjoyed filming this one too - there were lots of little ledges for me to stop on while I moved the drone around to get different angles etc. :-).

@ yeah it’s steep at first, but some quality spots to sit before the crux section. Kinda crazy to turn around and see the sea just behind you. Dramatic. Perfect place for your sort of videos. Glad you enjoyed it, Dan 😎
