Snowdonia's Scramble That Time Forgot
Buy the scrambling book: amzn.to/4fsqZic Hywel Ridge, aka Southwest Ridge, is a rarely ascended route that can be anything from a grade 2 to a severe climb, depending on the line you take. It's also far away from the crowds and the well-trodden routes in the north of the national park.
This ridge was once considered a gem until the masses focused on the climbing and scrambling routes in north Snowdonia. This route is still here and is becoming popular again since its inclusion in recent guidebooks, but is it any good?
Watch me tackle this underused scramble and let me explain the approach, the terrain and the different lines.

Do The Welsh Really Hate The English?

Read the Daily Mail article here: thebaldscrambler.co.uk/redirect1/ I've heard many rumours about Welsh speakers in North Wales treating English visitors poorly. Salewa Wildfire 2 Scrambling Shoes Review

This is what I think of the Salewa Wildfire 2 scrambling/approach shoes - sold on Amazon: amzn.to/3WalIoc Let me show you how they perform on wet and dry rock and on various graded scrambles. I don't hold back as I give you my honest, unfiltered opinion. The Cannon on Tryfan at Sunset (Short Clip)
Love the wilderness feel of the Rhinogs.
Fantastic filming and storytelling man! Brilliant film
Great to see you bag this one mate. I had a sneaky suspicion you’d enjoy it. Aside from a loose scree type push to the top of the penmaenbach summit, the arête itself is quality and always quiet too. Add to this the location, the fact the scramble starts at ground level, the short approach and it being right above the sea, it’s an absolute gem in my opinion. Great drone footage too, really captures the surroundings perfectly 👍🏻
beautiful grade 2 route - thanks for the heads up
Brilliant! Yet another beauty i need to visit. Looks like you could spend all day there finding different lines and challenging sections. Thanks dude!
Thanks! And you won't need to join a queue of climbers on this one ;-).
@thebaldscrambler Perfect. I always try and avoid other people when I'm out! Haha
Awesome vid 👍🏼 did this route last year. Very tasty in parts. There’s another grade 2- on Rhinog fawr south face. We tried to do this but we couldn’t find the start. Any plans to do this one?
Didn't have enough time on this visit due to the lack of sunlight hours; it takes ages to film a route, especially with all the different camera angles etc. I'll do that one on Rhinog Fawr next time I'm this way. I've heard it's a bit scrappy, but I'll do it anyway ;-).
@@thebaldscrambler nice 1. Keep up the good work 👍🏼
Wonderful
Nice one again Daniel.Great effort.🏴
Thanks, glad you liked it. :-).
That car park was 50p last time I was there. The ridge looks superb in your video.
Thank you. I saw a few old forum posts from ten years ago and it was £2 back then, but inflation and all that.
Love them drone shots of you climbing, really shows the terrain 👍👍
Thanks! I found this one easier to film because there were grassy flat ledges after each bit of scrambling so I could reposition the drone several times to get nice shots from different angles.
Great route. I love that you can be up and down in 2 hours and that it’s often dry and fine when the Ogwen Valley is grey and wet.
Awesome video! What do you think about taking this route in snowy conditions?
Thank you. It's quite easy around the lakes but it can be treacherous where it rises to the Pyg Track and also near the zigzags further up. Crampons and ice axe (ideally some experience with them too) will be needed + start early due to shorter days in the winter.
I’ve done this a couple of times. The second time I did it was in the snow. Was a bit sketchy over to the right of the scramble. But was easily able to avoid those bits by just moving over to the left.
It's not Cadair Idris, it's Cader Idris.
hard routes getting past allt he english people
Thanks! 🙋♂️ really helpful 👊💜👊
It looks like a mini north tryfan
Oh heck yeah. This one looks super fun
Oh yes! Well worth the 10min walk in ;-).
As a proud real Breton being Welsh in which I can trace my family back to the 17th century, you can’t blame English people for their past fore - fathers.
Nice video. Did the double ascent of this myself a few years back.
Thank you! I'm from the south so I didn't know about this scramble until recently.
Cracking little route with awesome views 👍🏼
It's a goodun, well worth the short walk in.
Superb film making Daniel. So many different camera and drone angles edited together.
Thank you, I spent ages getting all those angles and editing it all together. Good fun though ;-).
Try the bolted route Daniel, on the far right side of the ridge it's a 3s/ v diff topping out on the ridge.
I saw @clogsonthemountain did that route: th-cam.com/video/2pmh2JFnGU0/w-d-xo.html looks quite steep!
Hi, thanks for a great video! I used to live in the village below the scramble, and one day I climbed it. I must say that I found it quite intimidating in places, probably because I was alone, and I was quite glad to reach the top!
It is steep up there, lots of exposure on that left side!
Drove past the Arete this afternoom. Only ever seen a party of 2 persons enjoying the ridge in over 20 years as you dive by. Should it be descended?
I think ascending it would be more fun than descending it. I think this is one of those routes that's becoming more popular as more ppl become aware of it. I'm from the south so I rarely drive along the A55.
Great video Daniel. Super accessible route this one.
Glad you liked it, thanks!
We drive past this regularly on our way back from Ogwen ends I allway stare at this dreaming of the scree surfing back down Thankyou very much Daniel we will probably be stopping here in the future on our way home for a quick blast
Have fun!
Confidence !
Great sunset spot, not too difficult
Agreed! Nice quick route, did it twice in one morning, including filming/flying drone.
@thebaldscrambler yes saw. You can come down the scree but is sketchy
Im doing pyg tomorrow 5am
That's an early start, How did you get on?
Nice Vlog, ive walked up Yr Wyddfa 3 times and 4 or 5 times on Train. Now 61 im Happy just to Watch Vlogs etc
I’ve experienced all of this racism, I lived and work in Barry and Rhoose for 7 years before moving to Spain and get less racism living in a tiny Spanish village than I did in Rhoose. Engineering company I worked at was worse, but I gave as good as I got
wow
Just watched for the second time. 👍
Racism, pure and simple!
Wales Never been never will
If my wife and I visit Ireland, we speak to each other in Danish in public even though we are both English (who happen to speak Danish). Locals rarely know what language that is, but just assume we're foreign visitors - not English - and that instantly neutralises any anti-English unpleasantness.
My ignitor didn't work on my x1 but I figured out a way to get around that issue other than that I enjoy cooking with my x1 nice review Daniel
A very different challenge on a wet day versus a dry one.
Oh yes!
Great video. Thanks
Some of the Welsh speakers are very rude to non Welsh speakers. I've had countless incidents where the shopkeeper looks at you like a piece of excrement when you speak English, they either blank you or just point and mumble. You don't need to speak a second language to feel the hatred. Fortunately they are a minority in Wales. This is coming from someone who is an English speaking Welsh person, born and raised in North Wales. My aunt worked in a University Kitchen , where everyone spoke Welsh all day long around her , they totally ignored her like she didn't exist. Even at lunch time, she sat on her own and the Welsh speakers say together. Then after about three days one of them approached my auntie, and asked where she was from. My auntie replied that she is from Conwy. The woman said to her " then why don't you speak Welsh?" My auntie replied that her family never taught it to her , and in her area the first language is English. The Welsh speaking woman said " well if you're from here , you should be speaking Welsh not English"...... My auntie quit the job. Keep in mind this is at a university. Sometimes I feel like it's apartheid in Wales. Fortunately these ignorant people are massively in the minority.
The path down from the lake through all the industrial workings was used for the filming of the Inn of the Sixth Happiness. Based on the life of Gladys Aylward. It's a lovely walk 🙂
Yep total bollocks my wife and I are Welsh but born in England (No not inbred there happens to be a lot of us in Oxford 😀) but we can speak a fair bit of Welsh and understand a lot more and have never had a problem in North Wales even though we sound English until we said are families are from South Wales😀😀
Great video, bad enough going out in that weather never mind camping in it, what kind of sleeping bag do you reccommend
I went through a stage of trying to wild camp and go scrambling and film for my TH-cam channel all at the same time but I ended up with so much heavy gear in my bag (inc drones, GoPro, batteries, sticks etc) it was more hard work than fun! The Rab Ascent 900 was warm in the winter but I struggled with the mummy shape a bit. The Berghaus Transition was fine for summer camps but too heavy and bulky for wild camping. I haven't tried any others recently as I'm leaning towards campsites rather than wild camping atm. Best.
@ nice one. Cheers
Thx for taking time. Scramble vids & website very helpful.
Hey, thanks - that's very generous of you :-). I noticed there weren't many websites dedicated to scrambling and those that were often lacked detail about the routes so it's been fun creating the site and sharing stuff I enjoy. Best.
Thanks
Thank you. Much appreciated!
Always great content even if you didn't enjoy it all. Your Welsh pronunciation is very good. Awesome drone work and editing.
Thank you, I was out yesterday and today with the drone on some scrambles and have some great footage for videos that will be released in the next few weeks. And they were much better scrambles too.
Hi Baldy, we did this earlier in the year but starting from Bedgellert anti clockwise. There's an interesting mine portal on the river section. I usually carry some head torches, so we explored it. It's a long cross cut, probably trying to find a vein but it dead ends so they didn't find anything . We also did the underground mine tour in Signum which is very informative.
I was going to do a video about 10 things to do in Snowdonia on a rainy day and the mine tour was on the list but I ran out of time in the end so that idea has been shelved until next year.
They all simultaneously switched to speaking Welsh -as if there was some kind of telepathic hive mind in action ha ha!
I know, I don't normally post TH-cam videos about stuff like this but I was having a hard time believing some of these claims but maybe they just had some bad luck with the wrong people and perceptions got a bit distorted. I wonder how she would get on in France if she only spoke English ;-).
