  • Mary Jo explains in detail the best way to plant and showcase Amaryllis! This is a very informative step by step video. Starting with what size the bulb should start at, to soaking, planting, and giving them a stunning presentation. She even tell you what you can do with them after the bloom is gone and most people throw them out, but not so fast... Mary Jo will tell you how to use them for next year!

    One of the best videos I've seen ever! So many tricks you never read about in the instructions! I love the idea of planting them in a big tray and transplanting them to their final pot later! So much easier! You guys are a great team and so enjoyable to watch! I too would love to see more garden tips from this team! What a hoot to watch! Thanks!

    hey Paloma, if you want to try to delay the blooms for a year, it's quite hard i don't know if its possible but for me it is. the thing is i live in a place where we do not have winters (tropical) and the trick that i am using is not to cut the leaves and store them. that's what they do to make it bloom like, taking off the leaves and leaving them for as long as they can hold and i just not cut the leaves and on the second year i dig them and store for a week or a month and replant it bye :)

    I've been growing amaryllis for almost 20 years - I now have 20 pots - after their winter rest they are dried out and have no leaves, just like the ones shown here - I have never needed to use any heat on them - mine have always begun to send up flower stalks in time to flower at Easter without heating. If you really do need to apply heat then you are probably storing them too cold. Place them in a cellar or basement of a heated building for the winter.

      @dasUberputer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Dave Laisure she said she's not there all week - if they are in an unheated house that may be the reason they need a heating pad.

  • @dasUberputer

    the single most important thing to know about amaryllis is when to put them to rest for the winter - August is too soon but if you don't put them to bed soon enough they may not flower at all the next year - this detail is very important if you want them to flower. If you shake off the roots when you put them to rest they will need to be replanted when they are trying to flower - then you may need to use support sticks. Also you would then have bulbs trying to grow roots when you want them to grow flowers. If you shake the dirt off when you put them to rest the roots and the bulb will dry out even more. They are better preserved if you put the pots in a dark place without disturbing them. I re-pot after the flowers have gone.

    I just bought a kit that came with a bulb, some sort of soil pellet, and a pot.. It says to just put the bulb in the soil but I think I'll do what you said and soak my bulb for a few hours before.. Thanks for the video :)

    You should never let the water get into the top of the bulb! You could soak the roots if you want but keep the tops dry.

    Great ! Have also the `evergreen` cultivar, it isn't big blooming like the others. But i like the color and the amount of bloom it makes. Blooms longer and more than the big blooming cultivars. Tobad i can't plant them outside here. But i have got some other family of flowers that looks like these for in the garden. (Strange type of lilly)

    You put 3 32/34 cm bulbs in one pot. What was the size of that pot ? How much room should be between each ? How deep should the container be ? What soil mix do you use ? Cactus , Orchid ?

    Hi Paloma
    I had just started planting my Amaryllis a few weeks ago. The leaves are out and long but there is still no sign of the flower stalk. Is that common and do i have to wait for few more weeks for the flower stalks to appear?

    OK - she said she's planting at thanksgiving - that's the wrong time of year - no wonder they need heat pads - they are forcing them to flower out of season!!! Mine have always started to put out their flower stalks in early SPRING, in time to flower at Easter.
