    I love amaryllis especially the red variety. Huge red blooms really brighten up a dreary long winter.

    I replant my amaryllis in a very large, deep pot at least 30 inches deep. I plant 5 to 7 per pot and water and fertilize through the growing season. I find letting the roots go deep really helps them and I find that the bulbs actually get bigger every year. Then if I need to, I will replant these large bulbs in smaller pots for Christmas decoration. If well cared for, my bulbs can put on a regal show every year.

    This is not David, but his Lady Linda, a first time amaryllis grower. got some as a gift and am lovin' them. gonna try to let them grow and be dormant, then pot them and bloom next Christmas. The Bob B videos are very informative and encouraging. Think I will purchase some bulbs as soon as I can find some. Looking forward to next winters results!!! Thank you Bob B

      PlantzNThings Even better! They are 365 days a year EVERGREEN!
      Their leaves look nice, like humongous darg green grass leaves.

    Hello,
    I was just introduced to Amaryllis. Thank you for your fine videos on this beautiful plant. I now realized I planted them way to deep. I planted them like onions with just the tips showing. I'm in VA and they are in FL. I need to call down there and have them elevated.
    Cheers!
    Louise

    I've been seeing these everywhere but haven't picked one up yet. I'll have to get one! My mom brought back some small bulbs from Pennsylvania Dutch area on her last trip. I've kept them in the fridge and plan on forcing early inside this spring:) Good to see you Bill

    Hi PlantzNThings, instead of paper towels I use a piece of a broken clay pot to cover the hole. That stops the soil from coming and and prevents the hole getting clogged up, thus allowing for sufficient drainage.

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pearly403 I used to do this as well... but broken pots are hard to find in my home. sometimes I use gravel in the bottom of the pots as well.

    Amaryllis are wonderful and so EASY. I purchased my first one as a kit at a grocery store. I purchased it December 2000.
    In my area, New England the plants are put outside after the last possible frost. Sometimes they have leaves sometimes they don't it all depends....I let mother nature take care of them. Fertilize with a good 15-15-15 ratio once a month.
    Best way to think of the 15-15-15 ratio is Leaves-Roots-Fruits and Flowers
    if you can do a 15-15-20 that's even better.
    I bring them inside the first night that we have a threat of frost. I trim off all the leaves and let it go dormant...I water them barely letting them go dormant, perhaps just watering twice a month from November to the first signs of new growth...usually extremely late December to early January. Once they start showing signs of growth I start to water them more, allow them to dry out...do NOT over water for they bulbs will rot.....they will typically bloom from December to March depending on the plant..
    These plants are from PERU and Andes Mountains where they don't bloom at Christmas but like other bulbs in March, April and May...although I have had blooms as late as August and September.
    I transplant the bulbs into new soil every 3rd year trimming off 2/3rds of the roots, I do this in April after all possible blooms.
    After the blooms die off...clip off all expiring blooms, the blooms themselves should last 1 week minimum, although I have had flowers last as long as 2 weeks. once they start to wither CUT just the flower from the top of the spikes, DO NOT cut the spike. The spike contains a lot of fluid, its best to allow the spike to die back on its own...once its yellow and flopping over than cut it, I try to wait till its brown.
    My Amaryllis blooms sometimes twice a year for two years in a row and than once a year for 3 years and every 3-5 years I get double flower spikes.
    After the Amaryllis is done blooming your bulb is going to shrink in size, this is normal....don't fret, water it, fertilize it and keep it OUT DOORS during the spring, summer and fall months. Than repeat...they should bloom again.
    My Amaryllis ages are 14 years and blooms every year...its produces flowers that are 8-10" across and are deep red. My Pink Amaryllis is 12 years old and blooms every year and produces blooms that are 10-11" across, and my third amaryllis is just 4 years old and produces a beautiful stunning white flower that is consistently 12" across.
    They compliment my bonsai trees very well on the deck!

    HEY BUD, I WAS GIVEN AN AMARYLLIS TWO CHRISTMASES AGO. IT GREW FOR A FEW MONTHS MEANING IT SPROUTED ABOUT 4-5 LEAVES AND THAT WAS IT, NO FLOWER. FAST FORWARD UNTIL A MONTH AGO WHEN I FOUND IT STILL IN ITS POT. I STARTED WATERING IT AND IN A FEW WEEKS IT STARTED SPROUTING SOME LEAVES. MY QUESTIONS IS HOW CAN I "NOT" REPEAT WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME; LEAVES BUT NO FLOWER. THANKS, MIKE

    I learned how to harvest seeds from one of my Amaryllis, it is very exciting. I have planted 8 of the seeds, a shame to throw away all the rest. Three of them have sprouted a blade or leaf. Only about half an inch tall. How big should it be, before I plant it in a larger pot or can I leave it there until it shows a bulb? This is for experimental growing. My friend told me how to fertilize the blossom and it was exciting to see the pods grow.

    Hi Bill, since I recently receive as a gift Amaryllis flowers, I watched a few of your videos about thins plant. I didn't decide yet if I should grow them since I'm not as good with indoor growing other bulb plants as tulips and hyacinth , do they have somehow the same cycle? do you have a video about them? so far I see the crocuses that i got in the same time are doing fine, they are growing already.
    I know you are busy but thank you in advance for your answer.

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      they do have a cycle... these will be different than a crocus or a tulip because amaryllis are tropical. their dormancy is a easy one to provide.. just put them in a dark corner or closet for a few months with no water. after to pull them out they should be ready to bloom again. I hope this helped you :)

    Hi! I just was checking my bulbs and one had bugs and it seemed to be rotting I pulled it out of the soil and got rid of the soil and pulled off the rotting parts. Is that all I do? I hope I don't loose my new bulb.

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      you seem to be on the right track… make sure to let your bulb dry out before replanting.. if you have any of that anti fungal powder i would dust the bulb with that. also i've heard that cinnamon works as an anti fungal as well… I have not tried cinnamon for that purpose but it's worth a shot :) and it smells nice :)

    I have been growing a bulb of tulip, in vase, one different type not those usual ones, its has grown root like 15 cm, for how long do i have to keep it like that?.

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Has it already flowered? the leaves should naturally die off when it's ready to go dormant. around here the leaves of tulips last for 3 - 4 months.

    • @PalestinianByHeart
      @PalestinianByHeart 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      nono,, its still like bulb its growing roots in dark place for 3 weeks,, for 2 or 3 days im taking it out so it can start growing leaves, and meaby have a flower,, but how long do i have to keep in vase,, i want to keep it for the next year, what should i do,, do you have any suggestion ??

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once the flowers are finished I would transplant it into a pot with soil. will you eventually plant it outside? or will you always grow it indoors?

    • @PalestinianByHeart

      ,,i have only one flower i like it to be indoor, :D

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      remember that after the leaves die you'll need to give the bulbs a rest. they will need to be stored in the fridge for 2 or 3 months to set the buds for forcing indoors again

    Hello. I lived in a tropical country, I just recently bought an Amaryllis, but I don't know if its minerva. Due to the intense heat we have, I guess the petals had burned. Should I need to put it indoor? Also, once the flowers are finished, will they bloom again? Or should I do the what so called "resting / dormancy" even we don't have a winter season? Thank you!

    Hi Bill,
    I watched your amaryllis videos which were posted in 2013/ 2014. do you have any videos of these plant in recent past?
    Coming to me i grew with these plants, but didn't know their name, yes i didn't :) by seeing your videos i came to know about the name amaryllis. big job for me:)
    I have amaryllis beladona and Knight Star with me. Struggled a lot with crinum bulbs too. Didn't know their name except they are called crinum, both of white type , one delicate and other sturdy.
    Hope you find some time to post new videos :)

      Stop watering mid August... let it die back and go dormant... in November sometime give it some water to help it wake up... it takes 6-8 weeks usually to push q spike up and bloom...

    • @PlantzNThings

      I either use Miracle grow all purpose... or miracle grow Ultra bloom. I like to use the fertilizer @ 1/4 strength and feed each time I water... or every second watering.

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Donna Meade you can plant them indoors any time of year for sure... and to your no flowers point... there are many factors for no blooms. not sufficient dormancy. the plant might not have stored up enough energy the previous season.

  • @gailvaldemar6403

    I planted my bulb around 3 weeks ago and the leaves are tall and healthy looking but no flower buds.. how can I make it sprout flower buds?

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looks like it hadn't set a bud before it started to grow. It happens... it might still produce one... but if it doesn't... you will need to wait until next season. Treat it like a houseplant... lots of light... feed it regularly... and they require a 3-4 dormancy to help it set a bud.

      also when should i start to water

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      orchids plz water when the leaves start to grow... you want to make sure the roots are active before you water fully. you want to have the plant grow leaves for 7 or 8 months before you make the plant go dormant.. the leaves should naturally die when you stop watering. the dry period will start the dormacy and set the bud.

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just let it grow... feed it and treat it like a beautiful houseplant.... either the dormancy was too short or the bulb didn't create enough energy last season to support a flower.

      It never grew. I got one with a really nice root system on it, and it took off that week, other one I got had a root system kinda like the ones you plant in this video and it just... nothing. it got green at the top, leaves came up a little bit and then nothing. It's been getting the same care that the other one got as it started out.... the other one shot a big spike out and now I have 4 massive and lovely blooms on it. (what do I do when the flower spike stops flowering?)

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      when the flower spike id done flowering i just cut it off and leave the leaves to grow. as for the bulb that isn't growing... I've had this problem before. just make sure the soil stays just damp. barely moist.. the one i had this problem with took about 3 months before it started :( i hope yours is faster. I think it gave me 3 spikes if that maks a difference..lol
