  • Diving back into Dream Theater - this time with some actual singing!
The community voted and we'll be looking at "Pull Me Under" and the vocals of James LaBrie. For such a structured song (comparing it to Dance of Eternity which blew my mind) there is some tasty musicianship awaiting us!

For alot of us this was the introduction to Dream Theater.

It's a shame you reacted to the chopped up version of the song. Pretty sure this is missing around 2 and half minutes or so.

This song was my introduction to Dream Theater. I love this album from start to finish.

For LaBrie, it wasn't reflux: he had severe food poisoning which let to profuse vomiting.

Julia, did you pick this or did someone send you the link? This is a terrible version. It may have been the radio version back in '93, but even now, when it's played, stations play the full 8 minute version. HIGHLY, reccomend you check it out on your own.

If you want a song that really shows off James' vocal range I would suggest "Learning to Live" from the same album. His vocal ranges from B2 on the low end to F#5 on the high end. It also has a really nice instrumental interlude in the middle of the song that you'll really like as well. However I would recommend the album version rather than the live version specifically for the vocal injury you mentioned at the end of the video.

I think if this was released in 1985 they would have been absolute superstars for life.

I love this song, tho this version is missing a lot of itself, I guess its the radio edit version. I go back and for between this album (Images and Words) and the follow up "Awake" - I think Awake has the most impressive vocal performances of their entire discography. Check out the song "Innocence Faded" he has a really lovely vocal resonance in several parts, where its hard to tell which note he's actually singing because it sounds like it could be multiple. Great reaction :)

if you want a challenge with this band, count the timing changes in their song under a glass moon, then get the sheet music for it and see how many changes you missed……

John Petrucci (guitarist) will do those layers as backup vocals live. And when Mike Portnoy was drumming for the band, he would also do some backup vocals live, just an FYI 😁

This is the short version of this song (I guess to make it more "palatable" for MTV.)

My first ever Dream Theater was "Metropolis Pt. 2". Blew my mind. Fan since then.

Their greatest hits compilation is called 'Greatest Hit and 21 Other Pretty Good songs'... This was their one big hit, most of their other songs are not as accessable as this one, your analysis was spot on. Their musical range is amazing, from easy listening type songs to aggressive metal and tons of progressive in between. It's quite a rabbit hole to explore.

A couple decades ago one of my brothers and myself went to a show with Queensryche and Dream Theater co headlining. At the end of the show both bands came out together for the encore. Towards the end of the song they were playing Tate and Labrie simultaneously executed a very high belt. As their pitches went up Tate topped out, and Labrie kept going higher... it was incredible. It was clear to see Tate was visibly irritated at being out done 😆

LaBrie sounds pretty great on Live Scenes from New York. Video is in classic 2000s DVD quality, but not too bad.

If I can make a recommendation Julia. The Great Debate has so much going on musically, sonically, vocally, and more it should be explored in the future.

So awesome you picked the video that got me into them. Used to watch MTV in the early 90’s quite a bit, this video came on and blew me away, I picked up this album immediately afterwards. For almost two decades DT were my hands down favorite band.

Images & Words is such a great album, start to finish... as others have mentioned, many found DT through this album, myself included... thanks as always Julia! Will enjoy your DT journey continuing!
