Specifically, its about Hamlet from his point of view. At the very end, singing under the music is the Hamlet line "Oh that this too, too solid flesh would melt”, and then it ends aburptly, just like Hamlet's life.

When asked about the abrupt ending while at a drum clinic in Atlanta in 1999, Mike Portnoy explained "We had all this tension, and it just kept building and building, and we had no idea where to take it, you know? So we decided to just pull the plug on it, like The Beatles did with 'She's So Heavy'."

I grew up loving this song and taking it for granted. My husband didn't appreciate it or them until about 2019 when we saw them in concert and now he's like " I get it now!!" They still bring it live as of 2019!!

AWESOME!! You Finally found one of my
top 5 songs, of all time!
This song has so many layers...
    Musically, lyrically...if it's too loud, you're
    too old!
Dream Theater are such great storytellers and
their catalog is full of great stories.
Their greatest gift is playing outside of
traditional 4/4...gives them the ability to
weave in and out of varied lyrical phrases.
    "Masterpiece" is right!!

Dream Theater were huge Rush fans when they formed the band as Majesty in 1985 in college... their debut album as Dream Theater in 1989 "When dream & day unite" was very much in the vein of early Rush... They weren't given a chance to tour w/ that record. It wasn't until 1992 that they began touring & 'Pull me under' gave the band an unexpected hit on radio... then MTV, their first record w/ singer James LaBrie...and by 1993, they had a gold-selling album and a global fanbase.

Next time you check out dream theater, check out the finale of this album called "Learning to Live"... I promise youll love this one. the story behind it is deeply moving.

I was soooo excited to see this pop up today! Dream Theater is like no other band. This is the first song I ever heard from them, when it came out. I think it was their first single. I was BLOWN AWAY. And that was the radio edit, so the shorter version! This entire album (and the next one, Awake) are masterpieces. And yes, this is a band that has songs leading into each other on albums. That is how it ends on the album. I would love to see you do more from this album or the next! Thanks for brightening my day!

This band is GREAT in concert, I have seen them in concert several times and I have also met them (secondary lineup - post Mike Portnoy). Mike Portnoy is the original founder member and drummer. If you roll back on some TH-cam videos and where they get top drummers from around the world to interview & perform with them, eventually picking out their current drummer. One of my favorite bands of all time!! Incredible and humble human beings!

Hello Jemel. Just watched this video. Due to your appreciation of Pink Floyd, and especially of Rush, I just knew it was only a matter of time before you found Dream Theater. Specifically this album, this song. It's so great you like/appreciate this. That said, if no one has yet suggested to you, I implore you to check out the debut album from Zebra. In particular the epic song "Who's behind the door". Believe me, you will love it. 🤘

I will never forget when i was 15, my friend Pete, who was one of my guitar instructors, took me to a live show of Dream Theater in Long Island . Little did i know he was close personal friends with John. After the show we went back stage and he introduced me to the whole band. I think my jaw dragged on the floor that whole night. What a show they put on live. They were so down to earth, especially John Myung. I was one happy kid that night. Please go check out Yngwie Malmsteen’s Liar, one of my favorite songs of his. He is another god behind that guitar.

Dream Theater is arguably the most talented group of Musicians ever assembled. Much like Rush, guitar and bass player were childhood friends, added drummer while at Berkelee school of music. The three of them left school to form a band that would eventually become Dream Theater. My favorite tracks are Metropolis pt 1 and 2, the Count of Tuscany ( last song with original drummer) and Under a Glass Moon.
Great reaction, you will really like a Dream Theater. Rush is their biggest influence

VERY good call not pausing that one, Jam. There are layers upon layers of tracks in there to pick out and enjoy and one leads right into the next.
Images and Words was the ultimate rock-prog CD when it came out. I remember seeing this video on MTV late night and it blew my mind - especially seeing a 6-string bass for the first time alongside Petrucci shredding his ass off. (WHEW!)

Dream Theatre- what happens when college professors get together💜

    • @GuitarTotality
      @GuitarTotality 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I respect your intent of compliment - however, none of the members of Dream Theater from this time period even have a college degree. John Myung and John Petrucci attended Berklee and met drummer Mike Portnoy there. They all dropped out their first year to become a professional band. They've devoted their time to that reality ever since and continue to create awe-inspiring music to this day.
So, this is what happens when Professionals get together and create music. This devotion of time is what allows for the proper atmosphere to create progressive music. Fortunately, they got mainstream success, so that creativity can flourish... And we all can enjoy their creations!

This was their first album with James la Brie on vocals and also with their new label. This song does end abruptly and the album flows from track to track also giving the feel of it being one track. It’s also an album in my opinion that you can play over and over without any skipped tracks and you can get lost in it too..... it’s awesome and the next track you should do is Metropolis (track 5 of 8 on the album .... a total behemoth and live is just stunning and is about 11-13 minutes in its live version ...) love it and the bass solo is a killer but so satisfying when you master it !

That was the original ending to the song. Great song, great album. The first album with lead singer James LaBrie, to get appreciation of the range of his listen to "Another Day", it's a ballad off the same album. Dream Theater is an amazingly inspirational progressive rock band that's been getting a legion of fans via word of mouth since 1985, when they were known as Majesty.
Thirty six years later & they're still doing what they do best, making phenomenal music. Their latest album is due out in the autumn of this year, it will be their fourteenth studio album & I for one can't wait. I have all thirteen previous albums, as well as eight live albums, a greatest hit +21 other pretty cool songs, & their magnificent EP; " A Change of Seasons." The title track clocking in @ mere 23:08, telling a intriguing story.
