Sometimes he doesn’t flip it back at all. He has two drumstick bags. One on is left, the other on his right. The bag on his left, he always has the sticks pointing face down for, like you said, power. And the other bag are always facing up. And his sticks always have, clear tips. For that clear crisp sound on the rides and Max Stacks ( 3 different size splashes stacked on top of each other)
Fans have been rejoicing at the recent reunion of Portnoy and John Petrucci. After many years apart, Portnoy has recorded drums for Petrucci's latest solo album. There is something reassuring and comfortable in hearing those two together for people who grew up with them in Dream Theater. Great pocket player in the context of prog metal.
Its actually two drumsets put together with 3 bassdrums.... So the middle One is the left kick of the right set... And the right kick of the left set.... The left Side is for technical songs and the right is for the heavy songs. ...
Not sure if you've heard it, but 'Dance of Eternity' is a technical monstrosity. Worth watching him play it just for the meter and tempo changes. Cheers Andrew!
9:30 If you listen, you can hear how much the snare sound changes when he flips the stick front to back. It’s such a massive change in the sound, and him playing with the stick back to front is a major reason why his snare sound has always been INSANELY good.
I'm sure he flipped the stick because he has nylon tips on his sticks, so the part on the ride cymbal which followed 3 seconds later sounds more crisp :)
You MUST check out more of dream theater. I only started listening to them last year and I’m pissed I went this long without their music. Definitely one of my favourite bands of all time
@@GeorgeeeW Damn, you had fine taste from the very first album haha As it stands, Train Of Thought is my favourite album by them. One of the last I listened to as well 😂 Apparently, that album only took them a couple weeks to make or some madness like that.
The reason he flips the stick around at 9:20 is so that when he's riding the ride cymbal, the hits are more evenly toned. From documentaries that I've seen, Mike plays most of the time with his left stick inverted because he likes the sound he gets from the snare with it that way... but if he was riding that ride with one stick inverted, the left stick would sound a bit louder than the right stick.
Neil Peart of Rush played with the butt end of the stick throughout his career. This is probably the reason Mike does it, because he's a super fan of Neil... And I'm a fan of both of them!!😎
@@AndrewRooneyDrums If you choose to listen to Train of Thought (the album this comes from). If I may suggest, Images and Words would be a good logical next step. He does play with the left stick reversed. I have one of them I caught at a Winery Dogs show. The perks of being 6'4 in a crowd of people. The grip tape is on the tip side. One of my favorite drummers ever!
The video of him playing "The Great Debate" is so much more reaction-worthy. A truly great display of his dynamics, arrangement, and sense of melody behind the kit. Not to say this is a bad song or performance... Mike is dope and a super nice guy!
I really started listening to and fell in love with the dream theatre sound after Portnoy left the band! I’ve seen them with Mike Mangini live 2 times and I have to say he is amazing! One of my favorite drummers!
I always liked and respected Portnoy, but I fell in love with Mangini on James LaBrie's solo album Mullmuzzler. I had always wanted to hear Mangini with them, AND IT HAPPENED! I tend to gravitate to the Mangini era material, myself as well. He's absolutely incredible.
“You don’t just do that!” That’s the exact moment I became a huge fan. My friend said I should check out dream theater because I was into complicated bass arrangements. I went to a and b sound and bought train of thought on a whim and as I am is the first track. The solo followed by that drum fill section out of it.... I didn’t even realize music could be like that until then.
What makes portnoy so incredible is his ability to play technically, but still pocket super hard. A lot of technical drummers are super dead on grid.. but he keeps it just loose enough to pocket

Dream Theater is one of my all time favorite bands. I was introduced to them in the summer before my freshman year in college, and haven't been able to stop listening to them ever since (15 years later).

A classic subversive drumming moment on MTV!
A small thing i noticed. The flick of the stick after the first hit of the snare at the solo section, is probably by the fact that the main rythm guitar is absent. The guitar solo is backed my the keyboards, bass and drums only. He uses the stick from the bottom part to bring the snare bottom end forward and fill the mix. If you pay close attention and listed carefully after the first hit the snare drum sounds more fatter
I’ve got 12 Dream Theater concerts under my belt; hopefully 13 soon… I love Portnoy’s sense of time and rhythm. It’s almost like he plays ahead of the beat, pulling the rest of the band along. Definitely my single biggest drumming inspiration.
Great observation with the left stick. He switched it around because he likes using the tips for cymbal work and the part just after the switch had a lot of that.

Highly recommended for your own personal experience to watch the entire Live Scenes From New York production. If I recall correctly, Mike had to be placed on a drip after the monster (3hr?) show.
One of my favorite DT songs, I use it as a reference for mixing metal. Probably one of Mike P simplest songs, I love Metropolis as one of the opus Dt drum showcases. Great review.
The last note in "As I Am" is also the first note in the next song on the album. That's why there isn't a final drum note wrapping up the song....The song goes on. And the intro to the next song is awesome. Check it out when you get a chance.
Dream Theater is defined as Yes meets Metallica, whereas Rush was defined as Yes meets Led Zeppelin. Neil Peart of Rush is Mike Portnoy's favorite drummer and biggest influence
Hands down, one of my favorite DT tracks. Mikey was Dream Theater’s soul. Here’s why he fits so well in the track, doing a lot, but never too much. You should listen to John Petrucci’s last solo album, they’re a perfect duo. It’s a shame that they split, because the entire vision DT had was Mike’s brainchild. Think about the “Twelve Step Suite”. Five songs, five albums, one concept. And the five songs stuck perfectly in every album concept. That’s crazy.
Love the way that, for Mike, the song is fairly...subdued in terms of what he's capable of. Until 11:01 that is where you can see him starting to flex just a bit. Love it.
He flipped the stick since he uses nylon heads and he was about to play patterns on the ride so the nylon tips brings out more of the sound and is more precise

Mr Portnoy is, most certainly a power drummer, unbelievably animated, love the guy.
Drummers to check out:
Gene Hoglan: Dethklok, Mechanism, Strapping Young Lad
Blake Richardson: Between the Buried and Me
Lyle Cooper: former drummer of The Faceless
Matt Halpern: Periphery
Brann Dailor: Mastodon
Cameron Losch: Born of Osiris
Yo Thank You!!!
He's already done gene hoglen
@@andrewschulz9586 didn't see it. Besides, Gene has been in so many bands (can't believe I forgot to mention Testament) that there's more than enough to check out
@@AndrewRooneyDrums thank you for the like!
That's a nice list...but where's Thomas Haake from Meshuggah and Mario Duplantier from Gojira?
Awesome, my favorite band of all time
Highly recommended for your own personal experience to watch the entire Live Scenes From New York production. If I recall correctly, Mike had to be placed on a drip after the monster (3hr?) show.
Holy....
That sounds crazy Paul
One of my fav songs from my 2nd fav DT album. Love it....definitely more "straight up" rock album, but totally underrated!
I reeeally enjoyed this!
One of my favorite DT songs, I use it as a reference for mixing metal. Probably one of Mike P simplest songs, I love Metropolis as one of the opus Dt drum showcases. Great review.
AWESOME Kelvin!
Want to be floored? Grab 2 cups of coffee and hear "Honor Thy Father." Love what ya do, Mr. Rooney.
The last note in "As I Am" is also the first note in the next song on the album. That's why there isn't a final drum note wrapping up the song....The song goes on. And the intro to the next song is awesome. Check it out when you get a chance.
Nice info Bret!
Dream Theater is defined as Yes meets Metallica, whereas Rush was defined as Yes meets Led Zeppelin. Neil Peart of Rush is Mike Portnoy's favorite drummer and biggest influence
Nice Jason!
Can we just talk about John Myung headbanging in the Background while playing the Song
mike's posture is so cool. perfect.
Love the way that, for Mike, the song is fairly...subdued in terms of what he's capable of. Until 11:01 that is where you can see him starting to flex just a bit. Love it.
He flipped the left stick, to use it on the ride, in that ride/hi-hat groove at 9:41'
He flipped the stick since he uses nylon heads and he was about to play patterns on the ride so the nylon tips brings out more of the sound and is more precise
My favorite cymbal work of all time. DT's Home from Scenes from a Memory.
