    This is what we need, proper reviews of these cheap Chinese power banks. I bought a 12000mAh solar and it's true capacity was around 3000mAh, nothing unexpected but people are giving them positive reviews all over TH-cam without having tested them properly.

      @ciarfah 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Strider9655 I got a solar power bank for around €25 that claimed to be 5000 mAh but it tested at 2050 mAh. Granted that 5000mAh was meant to be at 3.7v so I suppose they didn't lie THAT badly haha. The lithium Ion cell itself is mislabeled at 5000mAh though...

      most people don't even know how to test them or even know what the capacity rating means, that said ebay need to stomp those 50,000 rated $20 banks for clearly false advertising

    This panel can put out close to 100 watts th-cam.com/users/postUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle.The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts.If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

      Oliver Bagley Yeah I was wondering what happened there D:

    • @vgamesx1
      @vgamesx1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Azurren I know this is a tad old but I figure I'd answer it anyway... basically what happened was, you can see at 6:54 he got a little ruff and the cutters scratched off some of that protective heat shrink, the reason for it being around the battery is because the entire battery is negative, thus when he went to cut the tab off it connected from the side that ripped to the tab which is positive, causing the short.

      +Zak M-O the side snips scratched the plastic around the battery, the reason there is plastic there in the first place is because you can easily creat a short because the whole battery casing is ( - negative)

    The charging current depends on the different implementation of proprietary charging standards (D+ and D- signal levels) used by SMARTPHONE manufacturers, so it is not really possible to achieve full charging current on all smartphones unless the charging circuit is able to communicate and acquire the proper the proper signal levels for the smartphone to accept full 2.1A. It gets *really* messy and it's the reason why different brand chargers charge other brand phones slowly. Blame the smartphone companies for not standardizing their shit

    Wow, what a great review!! This is the first that I've seen of your videos and it so in depth. Most people may look at this and say, "this is just way over the top for a review what with the amperage measurements, video editing, and text animations and so on," and they would be right. Which is why it's that much more impressive. I'm glad to see someone taking their time to put great content on the web. Well done my man!! Keep it coming. GREAT SCOTT!

    Very nice test, thanks! I've got the EC tech powerbank in an older incarnation (has only two USB ports but anything else is just the same) for some years now and it is still very good. What I like most is - beside the capacity - the low self discharging current, you can use the device months after the last charging. I use the device for camping and sailing, it normally recharges my Nexus 7 more than three times.

    Nice test implementation. But I felt necessary to supplemental information relating to solar recharging. Several tests here at YT shows charging batteries using solar panel, but no one thinks of an important point. Never charge batteries with glass window in between batteries and solar panel. Not strange that calculating the 60 day required charging time, between the window glass. Perform the same test on the other side of your glass window, in direct sun light. You will be amazed! Good luck with further battery power bank tests.

    Excellent information. I've owned one of these cheap solar batteries, and suspected that the solar panel would never actually charge the thing. It's nice to see numbers that show that!
    The charge time of 60 days would actually be much shorter, given that the capacity of the bank was nowhere near what it claimed.

    I really like using power banks. I've gotten some experience with them, and heck, I figured, why not give my input to some of y'all.
    I hope this helps some folks.
    I've generally seen that there are two types of power banks:
    1. Single-LED power banks. These will have only one light, which flashes multiple times during use / charging to indicate how much power is left. Some older models will not even show this; meaning, you don't know how much power is left, but otherwise they function the same as the ones that do flash.
    2. Multiple-LED power banks. Obviously, they have multiple LED's (three or four) and the remaining power is shown by how many are lit when you press the button (if a button is present). Some include flashlights.
    I've never seen a flashlight on a SLED before. Not all MLEDs have flashlights either.
    I've charged a Kindle Fire, a Samsung Galaxy S2, mp3 players, and a set of USB-powered speakers (not charged by USB, only powered by USB) with my power banks.
    I had many different types of power banks:
    1. MLED Blue, 2200mah. Flashlight. It could charge the mp3 players and the phone, but when I plugged in the Kindle Fire or the USB speakers, it would turn repeatedly on / off every few seconds when the LED's shut off, not effectively powering / charging the devices.
    2. SLED Black, 2000mah. No flashlight. Charged everything perfectly without difficulty, but could get hot when charging the Kindle Fire too long. It did flash to show remaining power.
    3. Bigger version of 2, it is silver and has 2600mah. Functioned the same in every way.
    4. Onn Brand SLED. It was an old type with 1800mah and no flashlight. The LED did not show remaining power under any circumstances; it was solid blue during charging, and turned orange when charging was complete. Otherwise, it was exactly the same as 2 and 3.
    5. CJE brand? Hard to read logo. 5200 Capacity, had a flashlight, MLED type. It charged everything (Kindle Fire included) but the speakers still malfunctioned; it would power them for about 30 seconds, then shut off. I had to keep pressing the power button on the bank to "refresh" the 30 second interval.
    6. iDaye MLED. 18500 capacity. No flashlight. Otherwise, same function as 5. However, it has two ports, so if I plug in a device like my phone or mp3 player, then the speakers will work perfectly because the iDaye already is working fully to perfectly charge the other thing. In fact, with a little fiddling around, I can usually get the speakers to work with it regardless (but they turn off if there is no sound for several seconds).
    My advice? If you can use a small capacity, do so. You'll be more certain that it'll charge the device. For some MLEDs, you have to press the power button to begin charging (only if there is a button to press). For all SLEDs, you just plug in, and charging starts right away. They are very reliable and have never failed to charge anything for me.
    If there was a high-capacity SLED, I'd be all over it, but all I've seen so far are lower capacity versions. The 2600 I have is the highest SLED I've ever seen. I think MLEDs are more popular these days. If only they could make MLEDs function as well as SLEDs!!!

    I just uploaded a related video last night! I opened up an 18 AH battery bank to see what the value of the cells inside are, and realized that the ratings the manufacturers state are of the cells inside, which is at 3.7v, not the 5v at the output, meaning the TRUE output is 74% of what is advertised. ( capacity * 3.7 / 5 ) I also drained it after a full charge on my constant current dc load to compare against my math. Interesting stuff!
    Keep up the awesome videos, I enjoy watching them!

  • @ElectronPower

    Not only the capacity data is incorrect, but these power banks also have boost converter, which means that the voltage of the battery pack itself will be lower than desired output voltage (in this case 5V), which consequently means that even at 100% efficiency you'll never be able to get all of those amp-hours into your phone's battery. Capacity data should be given at nominal voltage of 5V (or in Wh)... Great video, BTW. Great Scott! I almost thought this would be one of those videos, when people think they know what they're talking about, when they don't (was expecting you to confirm that huge capacities and bullsh*t about those small solar cells charging them up) :D
    Best regards, Electron
