He was considered co-favorites with Caruana going into the 2018 Candidates where Fabi won and Levon had a miserable tournament. I watched this last game live with Polish streamer (GM Zbigniew Pakleza) and it was just a rollercoaster, he watches it without a computer and at this moment when Duda took 9 mins to make a move he gave like 5 the best moves in the future, but after pawn g3 (blunder that turned +4 into -2) he was just devastaded. But he still belived that Duda will show his great defense in endgame and he did.

I admittedly haven't been following chess for that long but I don't think I ever saw a comeback game like Duda vs Gukesh. That was absolutely amazing. That endgame was a masterclass in piece coordination. I can't manage to promote three pawns up and this guy escorts his King, two Pawns and the Knight and Queen all the way to the opponent's backrank down a Rook for a Knight. Man that was good!

When Radjabov draws most games and qualifies then people question his fighting spirit here firouzja had 6 wins (with higher rated players) others had 3 and he didn't qualify.. So the rules of the tournament are designed for the passive player to qualify . Undoubtedly Alireza provided us exciting games

    • @psychohist

That's because Alireza loses a lot, because he doesn't draw much. The guy needs to learn how to play for a draw when he's not winning.

As others pointed out, he needs to learn to push his loses towards draws. That said, Levy pointing out that Firouza was more dominant with the 2nd tie break assessment is a bit misleading since it somewhat implies that the tie break system was a culprit. Most (save 1) of his wins came against opponents that did poorly in the tournament, people who were arguably playing at a weaker level. He finished with 2 points against the top 9 where everyone higher than him scored higher than that. This is kinda seen in the TB3 scores (which I am guessing was the Sonneborn-Berger score or something similar).
Sure if you scoring wins as more than twice worth draws then he would have faired better.. but in any 1:2 scoring for D:W, he performed slightly weaker than the 8 that qualified.
