Your recent tournament made me fall in love with chess again. I’m still pretty bad at the game but I’m gonna keep trying to improve because I want to be closer to your level (even though that’s probably out of reach 😭). Thanks man, I wish you all the best
Hey, fellow bad player here. Keep at it dude! I have to keep reminding myself how long these people have been playing, and look at it in those terms! 😊
Levy. I'm a long time watcher but first-time poster. I’m probably an outlier in terms of your average viewer. I’m 46, been playing chess on and off for 30+ years, my highest rating is just around 1900 in rapid, but realistically in the 1600 range. I don't generally comment or look at comments on videos, as these things tend to degenerate into “waste of time territory” pretty quickly, but your last few videos made me want to reach out. Hopefully you get to read this and maybe it makes a difference. First of all; regarding your chosen career versus the road to GM. You stated that what makes you happy is the online videos, coverages, low-elo, computer chess, and other silly things. I agree. Your last video covering Tata Steel one can definitely see the difference from the previous few. You just look more alive - like a weight was taken off. You also stated that you really want the GM title - but I think you’re less sure about that one. I don’t mean in the “do I think I can get it” or “is this what people expect from me” or even “do I think I deserve it” way, but purely in the “is this really what I want given what I have to give up to get it” way. Putting yourself in a position where you have a very long road of going through something that does not fulfill you, and with no actual guarantee of success, may not be the best. And I think that’s exactly what you and all of us should be honestly asking ourselves - what do I want to be doing with my life, or what’s remaining of it? If you want to play chess competitively, if that makes you happy, then do it, and if you just concentrate on that then the work you need to put in to get to the next level won’t be “work” and the GM will eventually come anyway. Secondly; regarding your anxiety struggles . I have been there. At one point in my career I worked myself into a literal breakdown (actually, it was probably right around your age). The best thing you can do, and what finally worked for me, is to seek help from a professional. In my case, the years of ongoing stress, unhealthy ways of coping with it , and just general abuse of my physical and mental health (working 48-hour shifts, weekends/nights, eating/drinking whatever was around, always rushing into yet another emergency, etc.) just caught up with me and the body just went “nope”. I had to take an extended medical leave (not like I had a choice since the panic attacks wouldn’t let me work even if I wanted to), attended therapy, got medications. It took at least 2 years for me to get back to the state where I no longer needed to have my anti-anxiety meds near me all the time and probably another year to get to the point where I no longer thought about it at all. What I’m seeing from you is that you’re on your way there, but you still have time to change direction. It’s not worth it. Once you hit that wall, the recovery is unnecessarily long and painful. Take the time to pause, assess, and recover now, because if you don’t your mind/body will literally do it for you. Finally; regarding your chess rating/performance. I am not close to being good enough at chess to give you pointers on actual play. What I can say is there are certain pointers from Hikaru’s coverages that come up repeatedly that you should look into. The main one being “putting your opponent in a situation where they have no choice but to play the best move”. Which is kind of counterintuitive, after all we’re taught to look for checks/forcing-moves first. But I think at your level it’s not that simple. And what comes up repeatedly (Hikaru has pointed it out a lot) is you putting the game into a state where you are down on time, you have a better position, but also you have many possible moves/plans while your opponent is just reacting. I think in those situations you are much better off just making a small improving move and letting your opponent have all the options to go through. One thing I am in expert on, however, is “performance under stress”. I still work in the same crazy-paced, always another-emergency career that caused my crash. I’ve been doing it for 30+ years. I needed the crash to really learn how to compartmentalize and deal with it properly, but I don’t think everyone else needs to crash to learn it for themselves. I think Hans’ comment re 2400+ being “purely mental” is interesting (of course it’s not that simple, but there’s a point to be made there) and if you think he may be genuine then you should go for it and see what he’s about. Or explore that same idea with someone other than Hans. One thing you definitely need to stop doing is worrying what other people might think. Easy, right? I’m kidding, of course. It’s the hardest thing in the world to put yourself out there doing something you are passionate about in front of everyone. You can’t really be great at it without being vulnerable, too. I don’t think that whether you have a camera or not actually matters - I mean, it may matter to you now but in reality it doesn't matter at all. Hikaru or whoever will cover your games, wins and losses, whether they’re live or not. And even if you decide not to look at it or respond to it, you can still drive yourself crazy thinking about what they may have said. Your experience with the name-hiding plugin is a great example of that. You used a tool to discover a fundamental problem that’s much more impacting to you than your chess skills. That is, you struggle when you put yourself under pressure. Whether it’s because you know people are watching , or you know your opponent is high-rated, or you know someone will make a recap if you lose. It doesn’t matter - it’s the same issue. Notice I said you put yourself under pressure. Doesn’t mean it’s intentional. The pressure is there anyway, but the way you process it is not in-line with having good outcomes. If you overcome that and you won’t need the tool anymore. The reality of playing competitively in some ongoing anonymous-yet-high-rated chess tournaments (as you mentioned) is next to zero. But dealing/correcting this is just a skill that can be learned/improved. We go through so many chess exercises. What about exercises to put yourself in a good mental state, to get out of negative self-thought, to even make yourself realize that you’re caught in a negative self-though loop and need to get yourself out. They’re probably very similar to the various exercises I was taught in therapy for my anxiety issues. I’m not going to suggest any, I just think working with a professional is a good idea. I don’t mean just for road to GM purposes - I mean literally for just bouncing ideas off of and learning skills that are going to help you. Hopefully this helps in some way. Sorry for the length.
Hey Levy! Big fan of your content man. Just wanted to mention that it was really cool to hear you mention Leon Mendonca. My last name is also Mendonca and had never heard of Leon. Good job on the pronunciation! I'm also Portuguese so it was cool to hear you reference that the name originates from Portugal. Also really cool to know there's a grandmaster with the same last name. Anyway, really enjoy watching you my friend, keep it up! 👍
in the other videos where you're talking about tata steel, what i heard was "Todd of steel tournament" and i was like "who is this todd guy and why does he love chess so much that he hosts a big tournament?"
Bro, watching your previous tournament and then watching this, i can really see you being an even more important commentator in the future, your passion for the game is evident! 👍😎
Fantastic games Vaishali win was off the hook . Excellent game from Fedoseev flawless . Props to Nordibek and Pragg both playing very sharp . Thanks for covering Levy enjoyed thanks have a great day take care
for a journalist who covers india's startup ecosystem, it is fascinating to see how you''ve leaned into the entrepreneur role with chessly, coming from a content creator's background. from the hoodie in the videos, to the product itself. you're inspirational, GothamChess
REEECAAAAPS! My favorite! No one does it more fun and more educational than you Rozman! Keep them fun, and keep them coming! BTW, good luck with your road to GM, lots and lots are rooting for you, young and old (like me), I know you’ll get it, and you can do it without messing yourself up too! 33:31 thank you for the Ruy Lopez and King’s Indian but GRAND PRIX ATTACK TOO PLEASEEEE!
Some small layout issues in this video: There's a couple pixels of profile picture above the a8 square. Also, Prags flag is cut off, because his name is too long
We love chess. How dare you make us prove it by watching your content and supporting you..... 😉 from a humble small business owner, I am impressed with the company you have built and how naturally you market your products, which are all fantastic. Keep grinding. Have you ever considered doing an episode on business management and what you have learned. I can't imagine your decision to step away from road to gm to work on chessly was easy. Pausing a dream is difficult. Even for another dream (chessly)
4:35 just for comparision , Mikhail tal also sacrificed his bishop , not in the same way but at the same position in exchange for 2 pawns .... in an OTB tournament. Gukesh might become a legend in the future
I would like to see some new chess format. Maybe format where people have option to see chess evaluation 2 times during game and they can choose when they will see it
Thanks for starting with the first round. I think this is a very interesting tournament, it always is but now we have Gukesh playing as the fresh world champion. 5! Guys from India in the A group. A very young field in a very classical setup. An 11 year old IM in the B group. I'm really enjoying this. Rooting for Prag and Abdusatorov
Crazy how Anish could miss a kind of obvious move like Ng4 as Levy showed if the knight were taken Anish could’ve checkmated with Bishop and Queen on g2 I guess having little time a certain panic and feeling like having to rush a decision creating a situation where the queens could be traded I was like oh no being a Gukesh fan I was happy . The collapse was as epic as the game where Wesley So blew a big advantage in a blitz game or rapid vs Magnus .
Levy: No Magnus, no Hikaru
Gukesh: fine, I'll do it myself
