Ryobi 18v Stick Vacuum Has No Suction (Gasket Parts Fix) PBLSV717 Troubleshooting

  • I've recently replaced our old Ryobi stick vacuum with the newer PBLSV717 18v Cordless Stick Vacuum with dual roller. The vacuum seems to have a more powerful Brushless motor with more suction, it stands up by itself ( a HUGE improvement), and is easier to access the rollers in the head. It also comes with a smaller upholstery head, crevice tool, and a much brighter headlight.

This is a great vacuum, but we accidentally lost the gasket for the dust canister (it can fall out when you're dumping the debris into a garbage bin), so it was having trouble pulling a vacuum and picking up debris--the whole reason for owning a vacuum! Honestly, I've tried both Dyson and Shark, and I find these 18v Ryobi cordless to be competitive and MUCH MORE affordable. I already have numerous batteries, so I never run out of power, even with a 2 story house.
In this video, I'll show a relatively cheap repair to replace the gasket parts on the canister and get your vacuum back up and running! It cost me about $13 for the backer rod and a little hot glue. The replacement dust bin gasket from Ryobi cost me about $20 on Amazon. I will also give a brief review on how well the pblsv717 works.

OMG, that gasket used to be there, I bang this out on the garbage can to clean it out, it must have slipped out one time recently and I didn't notice, it's long gone now! I've been trying to figure out why no suction for a couple weeks now, cleared the tube, cleaned the filter, etc, nothing helped. THANK YOU!

I had the exact same problem with my Ryobi vacuum and couldn't figure out what was wrong. Thanks to your video the problem was solved.

I used some Window seal grey foam tape - worked well as you didn't need to glue anything being one side has the tape(stickie). Thank you for the idea. Ryobi should sell those seals as I'm sure a ton of them have already came off and people don't know why their vacuum becomes POS.

Thanks for this video! I lost my gasket in the trash, but when I put it back in, it was backwards. I flipped it, and my vacuum works again! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you!! Mine stopped working late last summer. I took it apart, cleaned everything, but had shitty suction. I tried contacting Ryobi with no luck. I asked Home Depot if I could exchange it but they said I had to go through Ryobi. I called a repair place near me listed on the Ryobi site & left a voice mail but never got a return call. I had looked on youtube last fall but couldn't find anything helpful. I was ready to shop for a replacement but didn't really want tp spend the money. So i looked on youtube ONE more time & found your video. You are my IDOL. I don't have any backer rods but i have some screen spline but it didn't work, not thick enough I guess. I just ordered the gasket on Etsy for 10.99, thanks also to the person in the comments who mentioned it. Thanks again!!

I felt so smart after watching this video and trying out the idea. My ryobi was doing literally the same exact thing. Once I watched your video I noticed my piece was missing too on the canister. I had some black weather foam stripping laying around and used it and it worked perfect. Thank you so much!!

  • @justinlever1763

I used a pool noodle I just snipped a small strip off with scissors and hot glued around the edge, worked perfectly 👌

Thank you for your video, this was exactly my problem too. I used a rubber from dollar store container and it worked perfectly. No need to buy anything.

Mine stopped working and the gasket is there. I added pressure to the bottoms to close it tighter and the suction improved more so than before. It actually whirled the trash inside the canister. So even with the gasket, it needs more pressure or a thicker gasket. My vacuum is about a year old😊

Thank you so much for this video. After watching it, I went to the garbage can outside and after some digging I found the gasket! I had no idea that it would pop off like that. If I lose it again, I have the solution thanks to you!

  • @paulstradley9157

Thank you for a great methodical diagnostic video. Our Ryobi was doing the exact same thing. I was able to find a gasket but will remember your homemade fix. Thanks again.

WOW good thing I watched your video. I had to go digging in a garbage bag in my garage and I found the gasket just sitting in there under a bunch of vacuum dirt. Good thing I saw this before garbage day. I might glue this thing back in to secure it better.

  • @sirxorge7611

Very helpful I couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working thanks for sharing !

  • @1tracyschuelke

    Thank you! This is exactly

  • @peterwarner4771

thanks! fixed it, the rubber gasket had fallen in the garbage when we emptied the cannister.

  • @Sherberus

Thank you for this video! Someone on etsy makes replacent gaskets for these, ended up ordering from them.

  • @asukianani1

Thanks! I love my vacuum and was confused why the head had suction but not the stick. I didn’t have any foam or back rod available in my little town but I used Glad press and seal and it worked!

  • @MarcWilliams-gj9dv

Thanks. By the way I used masking tape on the outside of the cannister to seal the air flow. You'll just have to empty the cannister from the filter top side.👍

Thanks for the video. At least the Ryobi manual acknowledges this gasket. LOL...I still have that gasket, but the small rubber piece that goes where the dust bowl connects to the main unit is missing, and NOT acknowledged in the manual. But it certainly affects the suction. By chance have a home remedy for that item missing?
