That switch keeps the vacuum from turning on when the dust bin is not attached. Safety feature. I was about to toss mine out when I saw this video. I noted that there was a lot of debris around the little nib on the dust bin. Cleaned all the gunk off and it works like new. Thank you for the video!
Thanks! Ours died and I was going to try and send it in for service, but looked on you tube and found this. I turned mine over and you can see that silver switch through a crack in the case. I pushed in on the silver safety switch or whatever with a small screw driver and pushed the power button and it worked. Why is that switch even there is beyond me?, it doesn't make anything safer. What a good idea you took yours apart. Now a lot of people can fix their hand vacs. Way to go!
Thanks for posting this for the hand vacuum. I just posted a video for fixing the stick vacuum. Man, I love Ryobi's variety of tools, but I hate having to replace a whole vacuum head when I could just fix it!
I still cant get mine open.. i have the wet/dry hand vac with the weird little hex screws. Saw another video about this and was meaning to try it… thanks in advance
Great video. Saved my P714 from the trash can! Quick question, I'm having a slight challenge splitting the case in half. Is there is something I'm missing? Thanks again William
It works everyday, except all the suddenly it won't start . I will open my and check it out and look for the problem to see if it's related to your video.
Interesting, so something inside the on off switch is broken. I would take it apart and look at the on off switch, it must be stuck in the on position. 👍

Mine was even more simple, the enclosure was not fully engaged. Thanks you saved me time and $$$$$$.

Problems with stick vacuum. Took all screws out. It will not come apart. Going to see if it's under warranty
Mine won’t stop…. When I put in the battery it just keeps going I have to unplug it to get it to work

Wow, maybe the circuit is stuck in the connect position and you have to jar it loose.
