Hey a heads up for catching and great fish, petricanths or any fish with the mini game, you can keep mashing circle or B until the direction shows up, I always catch great fish without even moving my analog stick
Thanks for this guide, mate. Knew all the locations, but wasn't entirely sure on the size differences. Zooming in with the scope helps tremendously. Just one question; do you have to travel to another area, to have a great variant spawn, or can it spawn after the section has been fished out of that species, with out traveling to a different map?
I believe they can spawn while you're in the area but I would always fast travel to another map to look for it there instead of waiting for the respawn, like for the Tuna, I knew where he'd spawn on each map except Coral Highlands so I'd jump between maps quickly looking to see if the Great Tuna had spawned with it
I can now confirm they can respond without leaving the map as Great variants. Got a gut feeling to revisit the Goldenfry in the Vale, and there he was. :D

is size the only way to tell if there's a great version? I was farming for the ancient fish and saw 3 goldenfish instead of 2, I got suspicious and caught my first great fish. couldn't I just do that with the others?

Got all except the living fossil and the Marlins have been loading into the map and fast travelling to different camps I'd like to estimate around 40 times and still am yet to see them 😔
It took me about 7 hours of nonstop fishing to get every fish, I'd almost forgotten how to play the rest of the game because I was so used to fishing controls

I have 8 great kings and only 1 regular marlin. I think the rarity goes through other way around

You can also find Petricanths by the Platinumfish, i picked one up earlier when getting the Gecko that spawns by the brightmoss.
I only ever found it there once and I was going to and from there constantly, found Rotten Vale to be more consistent
yeah i grinded my first in the vale too just thought it was worth mentioning its also available there.

That's how a great variant spawns, they spawn next to the normal versions and yes they should be considerably bigger than normal
