Zoro has also changed a lot after not seeing the others in terms of seriousness. Post Timeskip, he only laughed once which was with Pica's voice. Pre Timeskip, he laughed a lot and was just not as serious. He said himself he only sleeps when he feels safe. That's why Zoro slept when Sanji held him, showing he takes Sanji seriously as someone who makes him feel safe to be around.

Brook always gave me an interesting feel as far as his relationship to the crew (and he is one of my favorite members). He didn't even get to make it through a single full arc as a member before being separated, and I think that really shows in how he trys to protect the crew from Kuma, stating "even if it costs me my life". I think pre timeskip Brook was so happy to finally have a crew again, he was mostly focused on doing his best to play his part in the crew, partly as thanks for letting him join but also to make sure he didn't feel like a burden. Post timeskip he is still the perverted gentleman, but I think he is much more confident about his place, and realizes that since the crew is his family, and you shouldn't need to earn your right to be a member of your family, he is free to just be himself (which of course leads to him still doing his best to protect the crew, all while cracking BONE jokes and being a pervert).

I remember the quick throwaway line of Chopper(I think) asking if Brook would even come back to them since he was a big popstar now. And considering he had only been with them for weeks before the separation it actually seemed plausible.
I've always wanted to see the alternate universe where that happened

    • @waluigi3515

This fits with his development as a pop star. Before he was a meek musician, and used softer instruments (piano and violin). But post time skip he uses loud pop star music and an electric guitar, almost as if showing his more content placement in the crew.

For people who think Zoro wants to be WSS because of Kuina, you're terribly wrong. He already wanted to be one before she even died, the motivation for that is probably going to be explored in Wano arc. His background isn't entirely revealed yet. As for the backstory with Kuina, I think that's to buildup the main theme that has been describing Zoro, which is "promise". You have to remember how he was first introduced, he 'promised' Helmeppo he would starve for a month in order to be released. When Luffy wanted to help him, he refused. He only decided to escape later because he found out that Helmeppo has broken the promise. That, is how seriously he takes his promises with people. As of now, he has made two major promises, one with Kuina and one with Luffy, both of which he has kept the whole time.
As for his flaws, it's obvious I think. For a swordsman, the most important thing is to respect his opponents regardless of their appearance etc. He has failed this countless times if you think about it. He has avoided fighting women seriously, like Tashigi and Monet, he also laughed at Kaku and Pica although he got angry at himself for laughing afterwards. In this arc, Zoro needs to overcome this flaw of his.
Zoro is also very insecure imo. If you reread OP and focus on him, there are times when he say stuff like "if only i could cut wax/iron" "if only i could be stronger" etc. That's because he acknowledges that he is not strong yet. His standards are super high and he keeps training everyday because of the burden of promises that he has to keep. He probably thinks of himself as 'still weak' which is understandable because his backstory is about his losses. As for why I'm calling it a burden, is because his original swordstyle is Nitoryuu, the only reason he changed it to three swords is because he has to carry Kuina's will. For him it's not a preference, it's an obligation, a burden.. a promise. Also, the fact that such a small child chooses to carry two heavy swords in the first place shows that there's a reason why he decided to place that burden on himself in order to be stronger. I hope Wano will give us the answer

I don't think Robin is a solved character yet, because we actually don't fully know how her motivations and ideals changed through the TS with the Revolutionary Army unlike the Other Strawhats. Mabey except her inherting someone else's will (which is completely executed perfectly through her character), she also found another goal of her own.
I can also back this up with a bit more. Her own goal not influenced by others since the TS was to care/love and be cares/loved by someone, completed in EL. She doesn't have another personal goal she herself created.

I'm not saying that is perfect, but i do think we need to keep in mind that one piece is a story that is told very very slowly, and a lot of times we feel like oda isn't doing something, but that's because he has plans for that in the future, the best example is Sanji, we had a sanji drought for a while, but then we had an arc dedicated to him and his past, and now his fighting a yonko commander.
Because we don't see things right now in the story, it doesn't mean that we won't ever again. I personally think that after this arc, the story will focus a lot more on the SH again. Oda wanted to have a section in the story where Luffy was on his own, then 2 sections in which the SH were separated in two groups, now we're on a huge saga focused on hundreds of characters, but as we've seen before, it doesn't mean this is one piece from now on.
I fully expect the story to not be a huge super saga with thousands of characters in every arc when we get to places like Elbaf and laugh tale.

I do think that there is a difference. Even after TS, Brook briefly (due to how crazy Sabaody arc was) showed mistrust on himself being able to be part of the crew.
Even after he was accepted by every SH, the fact that he spend too much time alone in the past made him not able to believe that he could be part of somethng.
During the TS, Brook lost his new found friends just a couple of days after meeting them (and after spending 50 years alone). Yet, despite of Brook having all the reasons in the world to be depressed again, he now realises that he is part of a crew, and now he has the mental strengh to understand it, and getting stronger for it.
Yes, all Straw Hats focused on getting stroger for Luffy and for the rest of the Crew, but the confidence of being part of crew was a thing that all of them besides Brook already had prior TS, and that was the character progression for our pevert musician.

I think Oda has made Nami more motherly and even more impactful to the plot post ts. She made the decision to save the children in Punk Hazard. She played a motherly role to Momo. (This is really apparent on Zou when Momo was trying to appeal to Luffy for help) She made the critical decision to split the crew in Dressrosa and later helped of the Minks when they desperately needed help, a decision which in my opinion validated the Mink - Straw Hat alliance. And now she's bonding with Tama in a very special way.
Edit: In WCI Nami had a very interesting yet overlooked role. She not only helped Luffy escape the territory of a Yonko, she took control on Big Mom's minions in the seducing woods, used her own special homie (Zeus) against her, then later permanently stole a part of her soul. People might now like it, but Nami is the key for Luffy to be able to control the seas as a king. Arlong understood that.

Brook's biggest change was in his confidence as a musician. It is the most subtle of the crew, but i can really only describe it as "he carries himself differently". Pre-timeskip, he was a humble musician who found joy simply from playing. Post-timeskip, he has a rockstar attitude which has almost completely changed his fighting aura. Gentleman swordsman to star of the battlefield who rocks every second of his stage time. Compare his pre-timeskip serious battle moments to his post-timeskip serious battle moments.
I think the best way i can describe the practicality of the change is with his actions on whole cake island involving the ponegliph. Pre-timeskip, he would need direct orders from his captain to be motivated enough to take the "extremes" that he did. Post-timeskip, brook has the agency and confidence to act on his own to complete his objective. It really is hard to quantify in general.

A few remarks to add to what you said:
    - while Luffy is much more open about his goal, he is also much, much more aware of his powers and of its limits. A good example being that of Wano, where he knows that his usual haki will not be enough to get at Kaido, and he works in order to achieve that.
    - Zoro is much more relaxed because he is immensely more powerful than before, yes, but he is also much more aware of his surroundings. Sure, he sleeps through freaking battles, but that is because he 100% trusts his crew until he's good enough to fight, meaning that he did learn to rely on their strengths as well. And also, he does keep an ear open to danger. Example: him sleeping during the banquet at the end of the Fishman Island arc, and yet immediately being awake 0.2 seconds after being called in a severe tone by Luffy.
    - Robin's outfit is an important change as well. Before the timeskip, she was generally dressed in black and in a very classy fashion. After the timeskip, she is wearing whatever she really likes wearing and whatever is comfortable for her. Example: her outfit in Zou.
As the whole crew, they have all come back trusting each other even more than before, because they trust that everyone has trained hard and will hold their part of the battle. This ends up with all of them losing attention sometimes, because others pay attention, falling asleep when they shouldn't, and generally taking their part of the cake and organically replacing crewmembers who might be overwhelmed, without even needing to discuss it. It's a great shift that, while it was already in motion before the timeskip, clearly has finished happening during the timeskip.
Finally, they are all much more open about their positive feelings towards one another. One good example being Zoro who sees Luffy in Wano and has the BIGGEST smile in the series upon seeing him, or Nami jumping into Luffy's arms in Zou.
As a whole, they clearly have all emotionally matured and have been so anxious to see one another again that they just don't care at this point if they look like children: they know what they're capable of, and they know how much they love one another.

Chopper came to terms with his identity and is ready to participate.
Luffy is more settled in a leader role in terms of both taking inputs from the different members but also finding tasks that needs to be done and assigning them to members
Zoro is more self composed and focused, before timeskip anyone could trigger him. After timeskip, only Sanji can ever trigger him and even that is rare
Usopp is slightly more brave but seem more about to accept his own role as a sniper and diplomat taking upon himself talking and negotiating with unknown sides creatiny alliances for the strawhats on his own initiative.
Nami is indeed more standing on her own legs in difficult situations, but more so. She has also become less egocentric and value more the need of the crew over her own need although she still has that side to her
Sanji had a horrible era after timeskip until they got finished with fishman island. But ever since, although he still has his weakness for females. He did mature and actual grow into a more successful womanizer and reminds me more of a phantom figure in both dressrosa actually winning over a devil fruit user with the ability to see the true intent of people and used to guys falling for her, and again in whole cake island with another woman who has lived a life believing she is a freak but here is a guy accepting her for who she is and changing her heart again over this interaction. Pre timeskip Sanji would never actually succeed with his approaches with girls but post time skip has a pretty good record before wano.
Brook pre time skip was unsure if he deserved a spot in the crew and rather hesitent with his own involvement never acting on his own and only when inspired by the actions of other crew members while post time skip. Brook is not only contributing with all he got, but taking his own initiative finding tasks that needs to be performed. At whole cake island he saw everyone else having their hands full so he did what nobody else even remembered about chasing the dream of Robin securing a copy of the poneglyph in BM possession so even if the mission would end without Sanji return, at least it wouldnt be for nothing.
Franky character transofmartion seem to me to have happened more through the new era and during the time skip, i only see his upgrade. He did however seem to have become a bit more intelligent compared to pre timeskip and philosophic.
Robin is hard to pinpoint how her character developed. If I were to say anything, I feel she is even less talkative than she was but not because she became more self centered. She seems to trust everyone in the crew more than she used to and she did get stronger yet. It feels like she has her own story that she never shared with them and it makes me curious at what actually happened in the 2 years they were apart. I am hoping this means we will get an arc where the revolutionary army is more involved.
All of the crew members did get ready to contribute and pull their own weight more post timeskip where many was relying on how strong Luffy and partly Zoro+Sanji was pre timeskip. Now they are all pushing forward together and I was happy to see that being how they all matured into taking part. Although I wrote the least about Chopper I believe he went through the biggest transformation.

I actually miss the more funny and casual side of the crew pre time skip.
Something I really noticed is that pretime skip, Luffy and Ussop intentionally made jokes about different stuff and about each other very often, while post time skip it's like the find themselves in "funny situations" I don't know if that makes sense but that's how I see it.
They even used to joke about how serious Zoro is and try to tease him a little bit, which is something rare to see now.
Maybe life was simpler back then, who knows

One thing that could’ve made the timeskip better is from Dressrosa to now Wano is for the tension to be real. Like I don’t see the reason on how bad the New World is. Obviously Kidd losing his arm to Shanks, Crocodile leaving to go back to the Grand Line from his lost to Whitebeard etc. At the same time it looks like Luffy has been doing great in the New World without consequences. Even in the war arc that Wano is supposed to be, I don’t feel a Marineford or a Sabaody Archipelago type vibe from facing two Yonkos.

    • @KatsuImagitian
      @KatsuImagitian 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

The whole point of the timeskip was to be sufficiently ready for the challenges ahead so that another Sabody could never happen again. Sabody was the biggest failure for the SH crew save a character death.
It's your opinion, but the story has not lacked tension in its own right personally the stakes have only gotten higher but the crew can manage them where they would be all but destroyed beforehand. Also, FI was all about showcasing how strong they got it was intentionally trivial for them, why struggle there and invalidate the training?

    • @salvadorsalgado5212
      @salvadorsalgado5212 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I see you're point, and there is definitely a problem there, but that doesn't mean that it is clear cut. The times skip was to make sure our characters would be close enough to the level of a yonko crew, because they were eventually going to fight them, and if after 2 years of training, the strawhats almost died in their first arc facing opponents way stronger than them, it would have been a huge disappointment.
Oda had to pick between 2 things, the strawhats being close to the yonkos, but still weaker so they have to go beyond their limits, or, have them at the level of hody and Caesar, after two years of intense training, conceptually it wouldn't have worked. You can't have them loose in sabaody and marineford, and then having them train that hard, and not make them demolish their first few opponents.

@@salvadorsalgado5212 I agree, I understand Fishman Island it’s their test to show they belong. My problem is Whole Cake and Wano. Having direct contact with the Yonkos they are still being able to escape situations that other people would die from. I know they are the main characters and won’t die, I just would like for the Strawhats to actual seem like they care about the situation. It’s hard to explain what I mean. Whole Cake and Wano are the two arcs with little tension in my opinion. I understand the first two arcs.

      @salvadorsalgado5212 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@nicholasalexander9866 yeah i get you, that's why I said that I agree on a problem being there. I personally did feel the tension in whole cake, but i haven't that much in Wano, i still really like it, specially because it's my first time reading an arc weakly from the very beginning, but i still feel it lacks something there.
Unless the big mom pirates reach the mainland and join the enemy forces, i just don't believe the odds are against them, i don't see the SH loosing their one v ones, and i haven't really felt the "deaths" of the scabbards. The one threat that i do feel is kaido, that guy is just terrifying to me 😂.

Yasuie also died just to make sure that the alliance has at least a chance to fight. But I see what you mean, like how the straw hat crew feels invincible compared to other characters (allies, rivals or even enemies).

I've expressed this sentiment before on another video comment section, but there is also how they changed as a whole. Pre-TS the Strawhats were really just another contender in the ladder of the Pirate's world, so just a scrappy pirate group with a lot of heart barely making it through the Grand Line's various challenges. Post-TS they feel more like heroes.

one of the best signifiers of Chopper's growth as a character is the changes he made to his Heavy Point, before it was basically a large, furry man, but now it's unmistakably a humanoid creature. As Chopper himself says he gave up trying to blend in with humans to become a monster for his captain, fully embracing the family he has

To me, the Big difference was Oda amplifying the personalities of the Strawhats, He didn't change what their characters were but amplify them. Biggest example is Sanji, people expected 'Oh Sanji is older so he would be "Mature"(quotes) but No he got amplified his personality. Zoro Use to act cool but before timeskip knew He has to grow, but after Timeskip he also amped up his own Pride to max and acted more cooler. So because of that people opinions on the SHs also got amplified

Best I seen yet is luffy and the entire way they managed to depict how underwhelmingly weak he was by the time he reached marinfold. Not only that he Just simply is weak, but the way they got us to see and know exactly where he stands at this very moment and we knew afterwards that there is No chance in hell that he'll manage to progress any further as things standa right now.
Luffy could basically beat anyone below the captain rank in the marines, anyone else would be a challenge. He even lost 1v1 to smoker, there isn't a single warlord he could have beaten 1v1 either. Maybe moria with extreme luck, but I really doubt it. (Yes he beat him once, but that was with 100 shadows and the entire crew at his side) He even got hit a few times by the elite soldiers. Then as soon as someone else decided to attack him, a warlord, captain, admiral or such. Well, he got totally fucked. Only to be backed up by someone else. Fucken jinbe and ivankov save him more than anyone has ever saved anyone in the entire anime during that ark. You'll even see the huge difference in power when they are capable to step in and fight with people on equal footing while luffy is ragdolled across the battlefield. And I dare say among the strongest characters present at that battle, jinbe and ivankov was among the weakest, along with moria. Luffy did as he always had, relied on his willpower and determination and hoped for the best. Which gives us, the viewer a false belief that eventually he'll get some sick power up during his rage or some other anime bullshit powerup. Especially after the second energy infuse from ivankov. But it never happens, he keeps being picked up and saved by others, ragdolled around by characters like mihawk, kizaru and smoker. Just to mention a few, only to.. again get picked up by jinbe, ivankov or even the whitebeard pirates. I 100% believe that oda did this having in mind that he was trying to showcase how weak luffy was and had him getting picked up and assisted by others to try and emphasis this. It clearly makes us see and understand that, something has to happen.

I think we are desensitized to when the straws hats needed to tackle islands together meaning they did everything as a group but now in wano, when luffy arrives all the strawhats are doing things on their own across the country. Even when luffy and the others arrived they all split up and did things on their own. I dont think many people apprciate this enough

I guess I like how the straw hats have grown after the time skip aside for Robin and Franky: I understand that their "taming down" make sense, due to their gaining more confidence and growing trusty and fond of the crew, but I really liked having a contrast in the crew, having characters that weren’t "happy go lucky" and instead brough a little bit of darkness in the mix
Now both Franky and Robin seems to me much more one dimensional and uninteresting than before, but I have hopes for Robin in Wano thou
