Oda's pacience is really impresive because you know he's had some of the most epic and cool scenes toughtout for a long time yet he doesn't rush to them, he properly builds them up so that when we get there those scenes hit the hardest
@@Andrea-mm8df In spite of the sheer length, the story arc of Wano is very rushed. There's a lot of plot threads that got left hanging and didn't get properly tied up. The first was Big Mom's rivalry with Luffy. There's also the Big Mom crew that was trying to climb up the waterfall. What happened to them? The Third Act of Wano is also somehow still continuing even though Kaido is already defeated. Normally in samurai stories, you defeat the big bad in Act 4. Zoro was not given enough focus in terms of his connection to the Shimotsuki Clan, the Shimotsuki Village, and Wano in general. There is no rhyme or reason for why arguably the strongest of the nine scabbards, Ashura Doji, would die of a small explosion. The fight against the Numbers could benefit if they were given more time to shine, particularly the fight between Jinbei and Who's Who.

Beautifully done. This also supports the idea of One Piece having a ‘living world’, where seemingly unimportant characters have their own moving storylines.
During Baratie arc Gin also followed the wrong man, namely Don Grieg. I think that was the first time Oda explored the concept, but it was expanded upon with Bellamy.
ye, I always wanted to see Gin again actually. I wonder if he's still loyal to Don Krieg. Should we assume they're both held in an EastBlue Navy Base somewhere? Maybe together with Arlong? Or were the Arlong pirates all directly sent to the Tenryuubito? I could see that too.

beautiful. As I have always said Oda is not writing a simple story. Years from now, like 50-100 years from today. People will look back and see Oda as one of the greatest writers of all time. Very few people in history can say they have written epics to the scale Oda has. Alexandre Dumas comes to mind when I think of Oda. Dumas was the writer of The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo. Legendary titles nowadays but when they were first being released they came out in parts, serialized, almost like Manga are today. Alexandre Dumas is now considered one of the greatest writers in the world. I imagine in about 50 years someone will have collected all of One Piece into one big volume and then there will be abridged versions that kids in middle school have to read and do projects on. It all sounds so far fetched but I recognize the epic scale of this story and it matches the epic scale of all the other greats. Oda will go down in history.
I am surprised you mentioned Dumas but not Tolkien. Lotr is considered by many as the benchmark of fantasy epic and Middle earth has the scale and scope that rivals the world of One piece. Oda is my all time favourite writer and Tolkien is a very close second.

It's hard to believe theres people out there that actually think Oda is a shit writer. Just goes to show they don't actually know anything about writing.
they don't understand what makes good writing good. They just want flashy scenes and crazy reveals not understanding you have to have a lot of set up for that.
One of the dumbest shit I have ever heard on internet I don't want to quote him to you guys I'm worried you may lose brain cells only noticing such a dumb... ... Opinion i guess
No kidding he runs circles around even some of the self proclaimed legends of hollywood. Some of these directors half the time don’t even seem to have the basics of writing a story down. Like say Zack Snyder or James Cameron.
Another arc which is brilliant in foreshadowing and themes but underrated is fishman island arc. I mean not only Arlong, jimbei and Hachi were well established in east blue saga but even Fishman tiger was mentioned in a minor throwaway line by Boa hancock. Also Oda doesn't just reveal to us the suffering of fishmen but instead let us experience it first hand through the eyes of Camie and hachi in Shabody arc.
Great video. You make it seem so obvious, however it really isn't. This is a really complex level writing and detail that either required a lot of planning ahead or required Oda to make use of small characters and plot lines that most writers would have forgotten along the way.
To me Oda always read as the kind of writer who comes up with characters and writes the story around them, rather than having an idea and creating a character with Oda it always seemed like the character came first. Oda has always seemed like someone who jots a billion characters down and comes up with intricate stories for all of them and his eyes are bigger than his appetite. This however in no way negates how well he integrates all these characters but to me Oda adding characters to the story works similar as to how Luffy looks for crew members “Oooh it would be so cool to have a skeleton that plays music!” “And a cool cyborg guy!”
I can see where you are comming from especially since that is supposedly the "best" way to write but as the video shows and many other examples at least for non strawhats it seem to be the other way around. The latest and best example would be Oden whose hair catchfrace and name where made for that moment where he holds the scabards over the boiling oil.

@@kingmaul3038 death note's story is not even close to how complex/smart one piece's story is, death note is literally just a bunch of hype and suspence glued together.
Oda's way of story-writing reminds 2(3) people: Hirohiko Araki, and Matt Stone/Trey Parker. Matt and Trey talk about their "But and Therefore" rule, and I feel like Oda crank this thing up to near perfection. You can feel the connection to everything that happened. That one event is connected to another through a logical explanation based on what is happening in the world of One piece. Meanwhile, Araki talked about the fundamentals of manga writing in his book where he said that the cores are "Themes, Character, Story, and Setting" with Art holding it together, but with the highest priority given to character to the point that Araki made a character sheet for every character in his story. Oda has that feeling too that each character in One Piece feels like there's their own world just like reality, each having their own story. Oda's story takes a lot of time to pick up steam, but once it does, you feel rewarded for actually following and focusing on the stories as "no stones are left unturned".
It’s a great connection that the arcs Luffy was without his friends he failed, but did have a small success because of Bon Clay who did see himself as Luffy’s friend. Great analysis
The way you theorize how the author came up with his ideas by thinking of a touching ending and then working backward is actually a really good technique and, though I'm not nearly the writer Oda is, I use it all the time for my own stuff. It works surprisingly well to help get through stuck points.
Oceaniz had Araki in his Top 10 mangaka but not Oda He seems to have selective bias, ignoring when Araki forgets about things in Jojo whilst calling Oda a worse writer (even though Oda never forgets)
@@michaelkrasniq8832 I don't think Araki forgets I believe that he likes to change things and shift gears in the story. However I don't think it is a bad thing Oceaniz in a tweet said that he gave One Piece four tries and stopped at Syrup Village so I can see why he says One Piece isn't all that.
ashlinmario sequeira What’s the point of a spectacular start if the quality will eventually decline, as is the case with Naruto and Bleach? At least with One Piece, it starts from being average-quality to getting better and *better*
i have never seen Bellamy and Gear 4 being connected before. I have never thought about it and never someone else mentioning it. We don't know for sure if this connection is on purpose by Oda, but it's crazy how many things you can miss, even if you spend hours on end with One Piece besides watching or reading it. (like watching videos on youtube about it)
I want to be a writer one day. And I have learnt so much from what you share and say. Thank you for this and so much more, and I look forward to even more videos like this!
I think one important thing in writing an “epic” is really emphasize on certain “themes” you want to portray in your story. One Piece and Oda has his own vision on life that only he can expressed since it’s his story, I think it would important that you keep strong themes within your story and have those themes challenged in someway.
The most brilliant point about this whole cyclical nature of which oda writes is the fact that it could go all the way back and it will go all the way back to chapter one when the endgame the end goal was set when Gol D Roger spoke of the one piece. If that's not oda starting at the end and then working backwards incorporating all these themes characters world building and elements into one gigantic cohesive story I don't know what is other than pure genius
These videos are awesome. You helped me realize One Piece is way more dense then it appears to be. The fact that you go in detail with every aspect is insane. It's not just "theorys" or overthinking it's the most legitimate analysis of anime I've seen tbh.

Holy shit that analysis of Mr 2 and the theme of friendship !! My mind is actually blown once again. Seriously your analysis video lately are better than ever, between this video, the Blackbeard one and the themes of Wano one, that's pure greatness.
I've spent the last 2 days watching the "analysis" playlist and just as I finish the last video you've added a 20 min essay on my favorite non strawhat. What a treat. Thank you.
Mr. 2, in particular, feels like he was either a longtime intention or specifically a means of tieing together story beats. When you compare Mr. 1 and Mr. 3's involvement in Impel Down and the summit war to Mr. 2, their returns are much more single-note, and the other noteworthy's in the organisation (Mr. 4 & 5, Miss Doublefinger, Valentine, Golden-Week & Merry-Christmas) simply have a manga tie-up chapter before being forgotten about. I think Mr. 2 being where he be is a trend of Oda's where he puts an ensemble cast together for the arc, and picks out and accordingly deepens the character of a couple of them for involvement in future arcs as well. Hatchi and Arlong are good examples, as are Laboon and Crocus, Dorry and Broggy, Moriah, Perona and Ryuma, and even Sakazuki during the Ohara flashback.
The most outstanding thing about Oda imo isn't his overarching stories length, depth, planning, vast amount of characters. To me the most insane thing is he maintains ALL OF THAT QUALITY in all those aspects while at the same time he draws professional quality chapters weekly. Most other manga's stories simply do not have such depth behind their stories and the directions are much more simplified which makes sense for how much work it already is to draw. But that man Oda is crazy one, it's like he plans, researches, and writes like novelist on top of drawing constantly, pretty crazy.
I mean... I love all your videos, but this is one of my favourites. I was two minutes in and I already knew this was going to be an epic ride. Thank you for these videos explaining themes and other things that seem to fly over my head, they help me have a more profound grasp of the series as a whole. Keep your excellent work!
How does oda keep bringing back characters and still make them interesting. Crocodile story was over but in impel down he still seems to have room to be fleshed out. Was this panned or is there some technique to prepare for a situation like this?
Its one of the perks of not killing your characters off when youre done with them. In real life, people have more than one story to tell. A properly written character reflects this by having more than 1 ambition in their life.
I do want to say that the anime, especially post time skip, doesn’t do Odas writing justice sometimes. Toei completely screwed up the pacing of a lot of moments. I can’t forgive that episode of Luffy yelling Ball-de-boo!! Looking for holdem. And if Tama says Aniki one more time I’m going to scream. Ugh.

As an amateur artist and writer who looks up to Oda more than perhaps any other writer I must say, this analysis is nothing short of brilliant. Up until now, whenever I heard people say, “themes! Gotta have good themes for your story to work!” I didn’t really have a clue what they meant, but with the way you broke down the Alabasta Arc, I think I finally understand. Nobody I’ve come across can read between the lines of this series like you can, and I really learned something from this analysis. I Thank you very much, and I hope to see more content like this.

How to be a better writer than Oda .Step 1 have your power system almost entirely thought out before starting . Step 2. Don’t have a villain get defeated then say oops sorry I had him appear too early he’s actually supposed to be much stronger . Step 3. Don’t forget about every member of your main cast minus the main character . Step 4. Freaking- I- Ok wait! You can literally reuse this logic on any character! Like- Sabo was reintroduced during the arc that thematically is focused on forgetting and familial connection. His primary purpose was to retrieve something that connects himself and his younger brother to the past they both remembered in order to, later on, fight with that brother in retrieving other people's memories. Who better to fight a corrupt monarchal system that steals away your memories of another person's life than Sabo?! Someone who- in contrast to Doflamingo- pushes away from the corrupt controlling systems he was born into and now is in a position to assist others in regaining their pasts against someone too powerful to protect yourself from? 5th dimension more like it, the ether. 3rd and 4th r intertwined. But yes 😁
Oda's pacience is really impresive because you know he's had some of the most epic and cool scenes toughtout for a long time yet he doesn't rush to them, he properly builds them up so that when we get there those scenes hit the hardest
@Daniel Veas Sánchez Hahahaha
@Daniel Veas Sánchez I think kishimoto just got tired of it tbh
Why did Oda change this with wano. Rushes, montages, off screens :/.
Luffys biggest step feels so meh
@Aether bro what wano is the longest arc in the series
When One Piece finally ends Oda wiill ascend back into the heavens.
u mean GODA!!!
Although I wouldn't doubt he could do that, he said afterwards he'd make a laidback comedy mech series.

@@pbtenchi I dont want to say it, but i hope OnePiece ends before Oda does and he makes that mech series. I'd like him to stay around and enjoy the sight of people exploring the forest that his labor sprouted over the years.
Also, maybe there's a possibility of occassional returns to the crew, showing that the world is still alive past the end if you get what i mean.

This also supports the idea of One Piece having a ‘living world’, where seemingly unimportant characters have their own moving storylines.

As a storyteller who looks up to One Piece, I would like more content like this.

@@kingmaul3038 I don't think Death Note is tiers above this, I don't even think death note is at the same level as this kinda of analysis in terms of big brain energy.
Love this idea, gives me more ideas to be a better writer. Thank you :)
Love all 3 of them
It’s a great connection that the arcs Luffy was without his friends he failed, but did have a small success because of Bon Clay who did see himself as Luffy’s friend. Great analysis
What an amazing analysis😭❤
The way you theorize how the author came up with his ideas by thinking of a touching ending and then working backward is actually a really good technique and, though I'm not nearly the writer Oda is, I use it all the time for my own stuff. It works surprisingly well to help get through stuck points.
Damn, I have to take a break to digest all of the Mr. 2 section. Great analysis!

Man, you are amazing. I don't know what else to comment, my mind was blown.

Gosh, I love One Piece, I love Oda, and of course, I love Morj video essays. You’re amazing
Thank you for reminding me why One Piece is worth loving.

How to write like Oda.
Step 1) Be God
How to be a better writer than Oda .Step 1 have your power system almost entirely thought out before starting .
Step 2. Don’t have a villain get defeated then say oops sorry I had him appear too early he’s actually supposed to be much stronger .
Step 3. Don’t forget about every member of your main cast minus the main character .
Step 4. Have a plan for every character to get stronger that isn’t an ass pull or something out of character for example Sanji’s raid suit .
Step 6. Don’t write Backwards .
Step 7. Don’t skip things that the fans would want to see . As well as don’t skip things in general .
Step 8. Don’t rush things .

@@BlackangelKatakuri
1) Not necessary.
2)He never said this. Stop falling for Big News Morgans' lies.
3)He hasn't, you're just not looking at the larger picture.
4)The only asspull so far is Asura. And even then, if it works thematically along with the nature of your story, go for it.
5)Proofread the stuff you write so you don't look like you can't count.
6)If you mean the standard technique where writers set a goal and backtrack their way into how they'll begin the story then yes, totally do that.
7)Never write for the fans. Write what you want to write. The fans change their opinion at the drop of a hat.
8)Even though the massive criticism being pinned on One Piece throughout the years was, "it's too slow"? This is proof of point 7.

And yeah ... the more we see, the more we know how great this story is
We need a character analysis on Foxy because if what you’re saying is true something crazy is coming up.
Thank you so much for your video essays man. You really hit the point of people criticizing One Piece because it's long by illustrating that One Piece is great BECAUSE it's long.
Amazing, as always. This is why I like your videos, it wide my thinking about OP
WOW
Bon clay is legit one of my favorite side characters and legit felt sad when he sacrificed himself again at Impel Down. Bonclay has a heart of gold man, and I wouldn't have known better when i first saw him.
Leaving a like, will come back to watch later 😁
+Mr Morj , your content means the world to me and lifts my soul. One Piece is beautiful. Thank you for doing what you do.
