  • New Rules For Vodka - So We Make A 1951 Blue Monday Vodka Cocktail - Cocktails After Dark
Today as we continue our look at the history of cocktails through our collection of old cocktail books; we make the Blue Monday Vodka Cocktail from Ted Saucier's 1951 cocktail book Bottom's Up. This is an easy to make vodka cocktail, that glows a bright blue in the glass.
    BLUE MONDAY
    ¾ jigger vodka
    1/4 jigger Cointreau
    1 dash blue curaçao
    Ice
    Shake well.
    Strain into cocktail glass

With those spouts that are on one side of the top of the container, if you hold the container with the spout on top rather than the bottom, you will have way more control over the pour and won't splash or spill.

I'm from Finland and used to drink vodka on the rocks when I was younger. You need premium vodkas for that.

Glen! Pro tip: when pouring from those steel cans, rotate the can so that the spout is towards the *top* instead of the bottom. That way you can actually tilt it far enough that the liquid won't just dribble all over the place, and you can actually pour it normally. Always remember the Coanda effect.

That Narwhal can is an interesting packaging choice. It's giving me flashbacks to working as a chef and being annoyed by similar metal cans of olive oil, etc. Even the cans with a little air vent aren't great, but are noticeably better pours than without a vent.

Kind of hard to explain without a diagram but when pour from containers like the Narval you want to pour the other way around so the air bubble is at the top and it’s doesn’t glug as you try to pour.

This is true, but I only do this when I'm pouring out a lot of something (chicken stock, mineral spirits, acetone, craft vodka, etc.) For just a tiny amount I turn the can around so the spout faces away from my hand so I can more easily get the container under it.

This was really interesting. I’m kind of so-so on vodka and didn’t realize about the rules change; it might be interesting to revisit. Regarding the viscosity, I’ve always found both vodka and tequila to have an oiliness/viscosity that is really different from other spirits. I’m sure there’s a term for that--I’m really not educated about spirits-but it was interesting to me that you both commented on that factor.

Two quick vodka notes 1) Try Core Vodka its made by a small distillery just south- east of Albany NY - they own an apple orchard and make it from the apples. 2) I replace half the vanilla in the recipe for fudge with vodka - it lessens the sweetness a little and if I use the Core vodka it has a hint of apple flavor it adds to the fudge.

Hey, folks! A note on pouring from an off-centre can (or jug) like this one.
The reason why the liquid "glugs" out is air needs to go into the container to replace it. The air can't get past the liquid until the vacuum inside is strong enough to pull it in.
    *GLUG* *spill* "Dang!"
To get an even pour, air needs to come in at the same rate. That means pouring slowly enough to never plug the opening completely. But if you try to slowly pour, it's not just far away from the glass but will hit the edge of the container and/or dribble down the front.
Turn the container upside-down, so the opening is at the top. The spout should let the liquid pour out past the rest of the container and it's easier to control how quickly it pours.
If it's a translucent container - and new - you might want to try tipping it a bit sideways. Practice when you change your oil or add windshield cleaning fluid to the car before something as precious as booze!
    8-)

The key with Vodka is you're drinking something that feels and tastes like good water.
Vodka meaning Water so on a purist view point you look for the vodka that feels and tastes like refreshing water.
What I've found is Potato Vodka tends to get the closest. However triple and more distilled grain vodkas get closer to what potato vodka does.
Tip I give to wannabe Vodka drinkers is be on the alert that the more you pay for a Vodka doesn't equal better vodka, and never buy a vodka over $50 unless the bottle is cool to look at, it's never worth it.

Honestly, I haven't been much of a drinker in recent years, and am surprised to learn that American vodka was intentionally tasteless. In my youth I leaned more towards vodka fruit drinks if I were going to a bar or hanging with friends and cocktails were being made and served. I still have an appreciation for combining cranberry, orange, pineapple, and other fruit juices. I guess since I don't really like how I behave if I get drunk, I tend to just mix fruit juices and add a little sprite and I can't really tell the difference. My drinking days may be behind me, but I still find the concept of cocktails, be they after dark or any other time, to be fascinating. So many possibilities. So few livers. As in just the one.

I put a lemon twist into the drink (I expressed the oils from the lemon peel over the cocktail first) and the drink was not so sweet but still really nice. Also, I made the drink with Luksusowa, a Polish potato vodka. I thought it was good cocktail overall.

The potato vodka actually looked thick as you poured it. Vodka in a can is crazy; I like that it's so wrong.

Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention but I feel like I missed proper tasting notes on the cocktail. I got the impression it was 'sweet' but not many other notes.
As you were making it I thought "oh I guess this is like a martini except with orange curacao instead of dry vermouth." How does it compare?

I prefer Chopin Potato Vodka, it is clean and smooth without breaking your wallet or killing mouth.

You will reduce the glug effect when pouring from that can if you hold it on the spout side, as you do when adding oil to your car.

Tall Blonde was my favorite vodka. It's no longer being made. Going to look into getting a Canadian vodka.

As to why vodka, my thinking was always that an orderless, flavorless vodka allows you to dilute w/o lowering proof or changing flavors. Also, want alcoholic orange juice? Add vodka.
It's a tool in that sense. I've always used it like that, at least.
Modern ones can stand on their own, and might not work in a lot of recipes, but def a fun thing to try.

I’m not a vodka expert and I kind always thought vodkas were kind of the same. Recently had vodka made from corn and really didn’t care for it at all Now I look more closely at the ingredients

Interesting, I don’t have any interest in vodka due to the lack of flavour, might be time to revisit it

I don't know much about vodka, I'm more of a gin drinker. But I can judge three vodkas. I compare the taste of vodka to bread.
Russian Standard: Black bread, quite rough, gives every drink that dystopian kick you know from games like Metro.
Grey Goose: Baguette, French white bread, the bottle is very decorative, the drink rather boring, as white bread simply is.
42 Below: Bun, but a really good European one. From New Zealand, but according to the way Polish vodkas are made. Highly recommended.

I probably need to clarify the term " bun" a bit more: I think the German expression for it is most appropriate, a "Brötchen, Semmel or Weckle". So not this tasteless thing that Americans understand by it, but something crispy, with a little darker flour and less sweet.

I just use vodka to make vanilla extract.

Me too. Also to make huckleberry liqueur. It's ok in a cocktail but I prefer rum.
