    Thanks for taking the time to put this up here. Frankly, I'm always a little impressed by the altruism of folks like you willing to juggle a camera even in the midst of diagnosis of some electronic or mechanical repair. I'm usually too swept up in the task at hand to bother. My trusty older little 14" HP Pavilion g4-1016dx has been up to the same black screen tricks for some time. On advice found elsewhere, I'd been just letting it sit with the black screen and battery in, then rebooting after an hour or three with the power button, having heard this pause in the black could somehow sort of jump-start its elderly little internal CMOS battery weakened with age. And mostly it's worked with some patience. I hadn't heard that the main battery in place somehow diverts power from the internal CMOS one, but I'm giving it a whirl in the black without that external battery in place now. Even if it doesn't pan out, I still appreciate your taking the time to put your advice up here.

      Sadly, your main battery out technique didn't do the trick for my ailing HP. I'd already fussed around with removing and replacing the memory cards. I suppose the next step would be to replace the little CMOS battery and see if that fixes it. I don't look forward to that surgery, but unless you or someone else knowledgeable have an alternative to offer, I assume that's the next step, short of just retiring the elderly old thing.

      Thanks, that is great to know. I'm glad this process is working. I was almost ready to junk my old lap top before I figure this out. I would imagine that different laptops do behave differently, so I wouldn't be surprised that it can take much longer in some cases. Thanks for the information!

      You have dead screen invertor. It is usually placed below screen under the screen frame. You should take it out and place working one. On ebay it's around $10.

    I'm glad this method worked out for a lot of people. I looked into this issue because my neighbor's HP had the same problem. To clarify, this has nothing to do with the Bios battery not charging, in fact the Bios battery is not a rechargeable battery. This is an issue with the motherboard, a problem that results from poor soldering from the manufacturer. Essentially what you're doing with this method is a "reflow" of the motherboard chips. You can hear the fans going full blast after a few minutes of running it with the battery off, this happens because it is overheating. That overheating has the ability to reflow the soldering on the motherboard. This method won't work for everyone because some may have other motherboard issues. I'm disappointed in HP and unfortunately its not the first time I've been disappointed in HP. I'd stay away from HP products.

    • @jaynesnetwork
      @jaynesnetwork  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I completely agree... This is the conclusion I had come to, and have been stating this in the chat every chance I can.. Thanks for the great insight! You are absolutely correct!!! Thanks!!! It is most likely due to a bad solder joint on the mother board.. in some cases it can be caused by memory stick not properly seated as well... Thanks again!

    I don't know what to say to thank you. I was in 3rd day of googling for this problem. I believed it's cpu or main board problem. Then I found this video and gave it a try. It was not successful, but it gave me the idea if the CMOS battery is the problem. I bought a 2032 battery, replaced CMOS battery, and voilà! It worked!

  • @michaeldall9918
    @michaeldall9918 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I don't think the problem is the BIOS battery. First of all, it's not a rechargeable battery so you can't give it a charge boost. Second, even if the BIOS battery is dead that's not a reason for the computer not to start. This battery's sole responsibility is to keep the BIOS settings but the boot process would start. Now the real problem - some HP laptops, including G62, overheat like crazy. That makes the metallic parts to expand and when the computer cools off - they shrink. Eventually that will cause the connection between the motherboard and the graphic adapter to fail. So why your method works? By leaving the laptop on for an hour (or like some people pointed out for more than an hour) you overheat the graphic adapter and its metallic parts expand (including the connector's pins). That temporarily recovers the connection between motherboard and the graphic adapter. Actually you need much less than an hour if you prevent the hot air leaving the machine. That'll cause the graphic adapter to overheat much faster. The only valid solution for me is to disable the default graphic adapter. Someone already mentioned it in the comments.

    • @jaynesnetwork
      @jaynesnetwork  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sounds like a good theory and solution. If disabling the graphics card worked for you, then definitely it is something worth looking in to. Thanks again for the info. When I get some spare time I will give it a go and see how it works on my computer... One thing for sure is that a lot of people are having this problem with their laptop computer, and this simple fix does seem to work. Maybe simple heating and thermal expansion is the key?? If it works long enough to get your data off, then maybe it is good enough?... Anyway, great insight, Thanks again...

      You are Correct! I was under this misconception when I made this video! I now believe this problem is caused by a bad solder joint on the mother board... and that heating the computer up by 'charging it', and cause the joint to make a good connection again.. depending what happens to the solder joint, this fix can either be temporary or permanent.. Thanks again for the great comments!

    Well, I'm glad that your solution doesn't go directly for most peoples go to, which is heating the graphics chip. I like that you went through each troubleshoot to see what the problem is. I have found 2 of the same laptop in the trash. The first one kept going for about 6 months then had this problem. When I can't figure something out with a laptop, my go to solution is to tear it apart. This one, I found tonight, I am going to leave it as is like you did and see what happens.

    Ive tried everything but the last one, I have to try that one when I get my next black screen.

    • @jaynesnetwork
      @jaynesnetwork  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, the last one is that one that worked for me, but this fix only works for the issue of the bois not starting due to the internal battery being charged down. Is there any screen activity when trying to boot? If so, it may be a problem with the main operating system and not the bios (see comment directly below). It is also possible that the mother board of the computer has gone bad, and there really is no good way to fix this. These computers are expensive enough that generally I try to fix them if at all possible, and the bois issue, and the issue with the main program not booting properly are fixable. You have to properly diagnose the problem first though.... you really need to know what you are dealing with before a path forward can be chosen.

      It depends on the problem with your computer.. if the RAM is unseated.. this can cause this problem.. and re-seating it will fix the problem.. if the problem is caused by a bad solder joint on the mother board, then plugging in the computer and allowing it to heat up will sometimes cause the solder to re-flow and either temporarily or permanently fix the issue.. if none of these things work, then it is time to try backup up your data on that machine... I have some video that can help, if you like to try that yourself.. Oh also there is another video that will definitely fix the problem.. if the hard drive is still physically working.. I will include that one at the bottom.. Hope this helps!

    Have an old Pavilion G6 I use for car diagnostics and it just would not boot today. Tore it completely apart, began to believe either the motherboard or CPU was gone since could not get anything other than a black screen out of it. Found your video and figured might as well try... and sure enough an hour of sitting in the black screen state has cured it.
    The whole CMOS battery not being charged thing as a reason for this working seems possible but I tested the CMOS battery when the machine was in blackscreen state and it's a healthy 3V, just to make sure I took one from a known working machine and tried it... no change. Whatever the reason this works though - and I can't explain it - it does and you've just saved me a few bucks in getting a new (old) car diagnostics laptop :)

    It appears to be an issue with the battery, whether it's the cmos battery or external battery. If I removed the laptop external battery for about 20 minutes and try to boot it up, I get a black screen. If I have a charged battery and let it sit for 20 minutes, the laptop boots up with the screen working.
    I didn't boot up this laptop for several months, left it cold. I get a black screen. I charge it for 30 minutes and suddenly the screen works.
    I'm almost positive this is either a faulty external or CR2032 battery issue. It's likely not the GPU as some HP models have loose GPU connections which require a reflow rework.
    I would recommend opening up the laptop, replacing the CR2032 battery as well as giving the heat sink and cpu fan a good cleaning.

      Thanks these are great suggestions. I actually made a video of how to access this battery without disassembling the whole computer. I was going to try it on this one, but it started working the day I was going to make that video, so I used a dead computer instead. I know other people suggested that it could be a bad solder joint as well. The problem is that computers are so complex, they are too many different possibilities. I was holding off on disassembling this one, because I know how involved it is, but I may just have to bite the bullet. I have also heard that the GPU can cause this like you said. Do you think you reflow with a heat gun? Anyway thanks again for the great comments..

    I've got a HP pavilion dv2700. I got it in 2008, and used it about until 2011 until it began to malfunction and then went into "black screen". Friend of a friend who was into computers couldn't fix it, so I kept it, put it away and forgot about it. Now in 2017, decided to try if it could still be used and 1)took off the battery, depleted the power, put it on charger. Black screen with led-lights and fan noises. 2)took off charger and depleted all possible charge, took off the memory and put it back, turned computer on - no change. 3)turned the computer on with the black screen (no battery) and left it like that for about 1,5 hours -> shut it and restarted -> IT WORKS!!! I'm so amazed by this :) to be honest, I didn't think it would (glad I was wrong).
    Unfortunately though, the laptop seems to have some serious problem. I didn't even remember what I had on it, some old pictures and video. Watching the pics wasn't a problem but the video wouldn't play longer that a second, then it froze (and screen began to flash, and then the computer gave me a blue screen and something about "hardware error" before it shut off). If there's a computer-savvy person here in the comments, do you have clues as to what might be wrong? (I'm just curious).
    Well, atleast I was happy for a small moment, reminiscing the old days ;). I guess I should put the laptop to rest...permanently maybe. Now it starts, but won't start up fast nor properly (Startup Repair -screen, if it starts there might be something worth saving). Shame though, I kinda wished I could've used it still for some light tasks. Are there any parts worth saving when the laptop is recycled?

      I'm glad it worked. I would try to save the data, videos and pics onto another computer while you have the opportunity. If the computer does go completely south, I do have a video that shows how to take the hard drive out of that computer, and copy the data to another computer, even if it does not boot. Computers can be replaced but the information can not. Again, sounds like good new. Best of Luck.

      Try installing a fresh copy of Windows on it.

    Wow... I have the same problem for a long time. Almost throw the HP lab top away. Will give it a try.
    So just take the battery out, let the computer charge the bio battery for a while. Right ?
    Thank you for sharing.

    Thank you very much for all the steps unfortunately in my case none helped. Though I learn something new and will remove the Internal Battery CMOS and replace with a new one. And see if the The Screen of Black Death will be gone for ever. Thanks!

      I am now thinking more likely that it is a bad solder joint on the mother board.. and that sometimes heating up the computer can cause that to make contact once again.. Replacing the battery is very difficult.. Others have suggested it could be a bad video card? Sometime reseating computer card can help.. You should consider backup up your data before you try too much more.. I have some videos that can help with that, if you want to thy that yourself.

      Thanks! Glad it helped... Probably heating up the laptop drove off the moisture??
