  • This month I'm at my Reading syndicate water. I talk you through the swim and the tactics I'm using, while catching some of the stunning residents the venue contains. I also delve into the controversial subject that has been the talk of social media. Are some anglers using hormones to increase their chances of catching carp?

    Another great video Simon! As far as the rumours go, I'm with you! No evidence, no crime! I know I'd want that courtesy extended to me if I was on the rough end of rumours/accusations!
    Truth is, I'm often accused of using NO bait... Such is my catch rate! 😉

I must say that the storys of hormones in carp fishing have been around for years when I first started some 35 yrs ago the big thing on the grapevine was using female pubic hair for the hair rig because of the hormones atract the carp ffs i think they were just looking for a reason to go muff diving before there fishing sessions 😂🤣

    You fail to mention that these accused anglers have very substantially upped the catch rate over skilled anglers on these venues fairly recently, leaving there own catch rates in the dust from past seasons.
    If 90% of the stock is coming to the same anglers from all over the lake consistently, surely that isn’t just good angling, there are many very talented anglers consistently blanking while a select few rinse it consistently.

    I have some knowledge of fish biology and organic chemistry (certainly not my specific field but referenced regularly) and there is tangentially some truth to the matter but as with anything it's extremely complicated. The difference between fish gingerly hanging around near food and tearing the spot to pieces could arguably be considered a hormonal effect but it might also be partially behavioural (ie. a specific combination of hormones released by excited, feeding fish might not work in the absence of fish visibly feeding aggressively), hormones released by spawning females might bring males into an area during the right environmental conditions but if they're looking to breed rather than feed that doesn't help you catch them. Pinning down these hormone types, quantities and effects would be a massively expensive and time consuming process, the main source of biochemical research and evaluation comes from the commercial fish breeding industry and it's outside of their scope of interest because they don't have any difficulty in making their unpressured livestock feed, they're only really interested in maximising the harvestable yield in an economical way. Things like fishmeal became commonplace because at the time they were a cheap, commonly available source of short chain protein, betaine was something that had been used in all forms of agriculture as a cheap supplement to increase feed/body mass conversion rates, all the different protein sources that are now appearing in carp fishing from peas to insects are purely a matter of cost vs. productivity now that fishmeals are getting more expensive. As you said, if there was an easy, hormone based catchall solution that was both obvious in its effects and financially viable then everyone would be doing it or the company that had patented the product would be very well known for its effectiveness. There are certainly products on the market that biochemically tick all the boxes for something that a carp will recognise and seek out as food (amino profiles) but studies by the producers have shown that not only does the product have to be specifically designed to stimulate the right detection pathways but the dosage and saturation rate has to be tightly controlled otherwise it can result in overstimulation that is counterproductive to catching fish. The basic facts of angling remain, you've got to be in the right place at the right time and offering them something that they'll willingly pick up as food, fish are not the smartest creatures but they certainly have the mental capacity to overrule instinct if they perceive enough of a threat or at the very least act in a learned way that minimises the potential for harm to themselves.

    • @airriflemaniac
      @airriflemaniac ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In relation to patents and hormones, there is a patent for using these specific pheromones as feeding stimulants, but I still doubt like you they have any real effect in stimulating pressured carp to feed.

    One thing in fishing is its incredibly difficult for people to regulate what people are fishing with, a lot of people make their own baits these days, whats to say that people ain't making their own feramones weaver that be in solid form or liquid form. I know in bodybuilding people can make human steroids from their own home. Surely someone must be able to make a fish steroid from their own home. I think its very realistic to assume someone could be making a feramone or a steroid which make fish go crazy, Specially in these competition everyone is looking for that secret edge.

  • @johnlee2230

    Well said Simon, I certainly wouldn't be too surprised if it was true but I very much doubt it & evidence is required before accusations are flung about. Very possible
    1. This kind of rumour just doesn’t appear out of thin air
    2. There is a lot of desperation in carp fishing now
    3. For somebody where it’s their livelihood. The pressure is always on to catch to produce whatever content. Look at these so called fitness “influencers” on TH-cam. Their body is their business. And you really think they don’t take steroids to stay in peak shape to be able to market themselves as best as they can? They deny it of course. This is no different
    These substances exist and in my opinion I believe there is more to it than is being let on and whoever is found out should be named and shamed

  • @DW14974
    @DW14974 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can remember maybe 15 years ago an angler who was sponsored by mistral baits at the time told me that his bait contained something that the carp get addicted to. I think he said it’s an ingredient that’s found in chocolate. I totally forgot about it until

  • @darrylclarkson1799
    @darrylclarkson1799 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Personally I believe the top sponsored anglers do use substances/additives that the general angler is not privy to,bait companies employ scientists to find out what makes carp feed!! Whether that's hormones I don't know but sponsored anglers definitely get the 100% full on bait unlike the rest of us who get a watered down version so the bait company makes more money,John baker said on the korda podcast "sponsored anglers get the best bait" !!!!!!!!

  • @gilesbrinkman9798
    @gilesbrinkman9798 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Simon, I have to unfortunately disagree as I have been on a lake with people using it. I know the exact hormone in question and to answer your theory about carp companies selling it if it worked, this would be impossible as the only place that you can get it from is from a vet that is willing to prescribe it at the jeopardy of their career and with a cost of around £50 for 10ml it makes it completely unviable financially. I suppose every angler has to fish their own way, I personally wouldn’t ever use a product that I didn’t know the effect it would have on a water/fish stock but believe me it is going on. Now I’m also not saying your friends that have been accused are using it persay but it is going on.

    • @gilesbrinkman9798
      @gilesbrinkman9798 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Neil Hawkins the lake is a very famous day ticket lake and I reported the anglers. I’m not on here to name and shame but the hormone is called Prostaglandin F2 Alpha and is very dangerous! As I said the only way to get it is from a vet and that veterinary surgeon is jeopardising their job by selling it, it is going on though!

    • @gilesbrinkman9798
      @gilesbrinkman9798 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Neil Hawkins ok so you know of hormones being used aswell - it unfortunately is going on and unlike most bait ingredients that have been tried and tested for aquaculture use none of these hormones have so the possible effects on fish and the general lake environment can be catastrophic 🤦‍♂️

    • @gilesbrinkman9798
      @gilesbrinkman9798 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @jamesrussel1133
    @jamesrussel1133 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Whenever you catch regularly, either multiple catches or big fish you draw attention, often from the jealous who never accept it’s how you do things to better their catch rates, you must be doing something illegal.
    It could be you are zigging whilst they are all on bottom baits in the heat of the day. It could be you are using unusual baits not boilies the fish are less wary of.
    You only have to look at rig and bait bans on waters, invariably the result of some catching too many fish for the liking of others under the unproven auspices of fish safety.
    You catch the big girl, it cheeses people off who then just leave such a venue believing that fish only comes out a couple of times a year.
    For me a lot of these people aren’t true carpers, but that’s their choice, and if it was only that fish they wanted to get, I understand it.
    You can be seen as unwanted competition and to increase their chances they basically want you off the lake. From basically making you feel unwelcome to spreading rumours that you are doing something illegal, there is little off limits for those needing to catch desperately.
    I remember one busy day ticket lake I found fish in a snaggy corner below a canopy of trees. You couldn’t cast to it, you had to fish under the canopy. I was fishing a “normal” swim nearby but regularly nipped down though the undergrowth to top up the nearest clear spot just with simple hemp, maize and some other perfectly legal additions.
    Maggots and all nuts were banned.
    I was there for a 3 day session, catching some nice fish, largely on floaters but just feeding the corner swim, getting them confident. I didn’t drop on it until day 3. By then within minutes of a rebait it the whole area was clouding and fizzing. It was time.
    I dropped in with stalking gear and a net as quietly as I could. Then when I was sure they were feeding as if I wasnt there I flicked the bait out.
    Usually a bite came within 5 minutes.
    It was all heavy fighting in restricted space but on tough gear, 18lb line, I had it sorted.
    I caught so many fish on that last day.
    Of course to others on the bank opposite all they noticed was me nipping down, minutes later bent into a fish, lots of thrashing and commotion, bundling another fish into the net.
    To them, fishing just the same as everyone else, 2 fish in their 48 hours, I had to be cheating somehow. I was on dodgy bait.
    So much so that by late offer on the owner of the multi lake complex came all the way around to inspect the swim, no doubt prompted by one of the leaving anglers opposite.
    He peered into the water, hand over his eyes to cut out the glare, I guess looking for maggots, nuts or something, but would have only seen a few grains of corn. He came over for a little polite chat, not explaining why, but didn’t accuse me of anything, my only wrong was to be catching fish too fast for the liking of others.
    Fast forward 2 years, a recce to the same complex I may now never fish again. For in each one of a number of uncomfortable tight corners and stalking swims where you couldn’t plant a bivy, there were signs saying no fishing, at least half a dozen of them. It seemed that owners were waging war on those actively hunting margin feeding fish!
    The net result is those “safe” areas become even safer, more likely spots for fish to congregate. When fished they weren’t so safe there, would spook the rest out after a capture, and that would actually push fish out from those places to move and feed in other areas of the lake.
    That’s why I dropped in, caught one, rebaited after they spooked, and left it a good hour each time before they re assembled to feed again, going back to my bivy for a while.
    What it actually did by banning fishing those spots was to make it harder for those who must have complained to catch, not easier. But I guess if everyone only caught the odd fish like them they were happy, it didn’t show them up!
    If you want to be “liked” on that busy day ticket, don’t catch.
    If you are a carp catcher you will always have people stabbing you in the back….fact.
    You must have learnt something illegal, especially if you have worked in the trade a long time or edited carp rags.
    But that instant attract “ingredient X” has been promoted since the earliest days of carp fishing and always will.
    My special ingredient…age…with that comes wisdom. But also have you noticed how some “aged” baits just before then turn, become sticky like “tiger juice” or corn that’s been out in the sun, even luncheon meat with its oils in the early days, how in that state it can fish so, so, much better than something totally fresh. How old washed out baits become safe for fish to eat.
    I wouldn’t want personally to eat stuff a few days old, but carp are different for sure. You just have to know when it has gone off too much. Another thing age and experience tells you and you can’t get from a carp “ how to catch” guide.
    Lol

    its more than probable that someone in the bait industry at some stage would try hormones ...i would say defo happened but finding out who near impossible...any profesional angler will defend the sport and say no as its in thier interest,,in same way some profesinals have lied about wieghts someone gonna go for it ...more likely a younger generation thing theres a big problem at gyms with steroids much more than years ago.maybe they be more likely to try...
    so its probable some one somewhere is pushing barriers in carp bait as you can make at home..in past it was alcohol in baits i bet someones tried vitamins lol

    We all know Crowy that spawning, full of hormones carp have nothing else on their mind than to feed. That's why spawning is everyone favorite time to catch carp, just chuck your bait on them and hey presto. I need to get my hands on some of that substance, apparently it is done by the same company that produces rat paste (you catch a rat, cover it in paste and they die instantly). Haven't figured out yet the injection system but a spike attached to my spomb shoud sort it out. I do not believe that ability of those anglers to bait and cast precisely at 130yds+ has anything to do with their catch rate. If it was as easy, everyone would be doing it ;-)

    Yes they are cheating ,there is no way any angler can outfish the majority most of the time,and the reason say for instance mainline does not put said substance in there bait and sell it is because the stuff is bad for the fish and environment if used in massive amounts plus it's probably illegal to use full stop,all these so called top anglers using this stuff are all sponsored anglers so the bait companies are already raking it in by people thinking it's the same bait,if a known angler caught 5 forties and twenty 30s in a session was sponsored by say mainline then mainline sales would rocket ,the bait companies would just turn a blind eye as money talks.......I am convinced they are using hormones and nothing will change my mind.

    is it just coincidence and talent that allows these anglers to go onto really tough day ticket lakes and have red letter sessions on a regular basis.....🤔
    they claim to be using the same as others but just rinse the lakes time and time again.. anyone with sense would accept that they are using something and their keeping it as quiet as possible because it's only accessible from vets and anyone caught supplying them is likely to be struck off.
    if they can prove otherwise then fair play and the parties mentioned deserve an apology...
