    Your video brought back lots of memories of my own arrival into Sydney. I travelled there to watch my wife compete as a member of the U.S. Equestrian Team during the 2000 Sydney Games. It had already been a long day of travelling by the time I reached Los Angeles to connect to my 16-hour Qantas flight in the middle seat, in economy, in the screaming baby section. After such a long time on the plane we suddenly found ourselves flying over land with a view of the famous Opera House and the Harbor Bridge right at sunset. After a slow turn we flew right over the Olympic Stadium with the torch burning before we touched down at the airport. It seemed a wonderful welcome to Australia.

    • @Dawnraider

      What a great memory. It was a very exciting time in Sydney. How did your wife do? I think it was out at Horsely Park.

    • @WBDE
      @WBDE 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dawnraider Peter, you are correct that it was out at Horsely Park. I remember having to take the train from Parramatta where I was staying out to Blacktown and then get on a bus. Alas, no medals for my wife at the 2000 Sydney Games but nonetheless it was a huge accomplishment and honor to get to go compete (and I didn't have to pay for it). I did learn that when she is competing at that level that I needed to leave her alone as she has her 'game face' on. The last day I was in Australia, she found me out in the public area and asked if I could take just a couple of things home with me as she would be there for another few days. She then loaded me with three military size duffle bags. When I was checking in with Qantas the next morning I mentioned that this was all my wife's stuff as she is competing and the nice Qantas lady didn't charge me anything extra for the grossly excessive weight I was checking in. When I got home and opened the bags, I found it was all of my wife's (and horse's) dirty laundry.

    The threshold of 16L is a long long way south of the rest of the airport. So you're still very very high when you cross over the airport "grounds".

    • @Dawnraider
      @Dawnraider  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly right. You actually fly over the East/West runway and the private jet terminal before touch down. Then there is the long taxi back to the terminal.

      If Bali seems close to Sydney you must come from a long way. I think Bali is around 7 hours and most of that time is spent crossing Australia.

    Sydney's not bad for a place that started as a Penal Colony 200 years ago.
    Fun Fact: Captain Cook actually missed Sydney Harbour.
    He hit Botany Bay but sailed straight passed The Sydney Harbour Heads.
    It was Captain Phillip that first sailed into the harbour.
    He was blown away by how majestic and deep it was.
    Then he unloaded his cargo of Irish Rebels, thieves and bad boys.
    That was 200 years ago.
    Fun Fact.
    Sydney became a Penal Colony because King George 3 lost North America and couldn't send the bad boys there anymore.
    So off to Australia the bad boys went.

    • @Dawnraider
      @Dawnraider  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is true. It is an amazing Harbour and can see how it could have been missed with the lofty sandstone cliffs presenting a daunting barrier. It is a bit like a washing machine sailing in and out.

      Merry Christmas.
      Fun Facts.
      Captain Cook's Maps were closely guarded Military Secrets.
      Britain was at war with France and
      it would be treason to let them copy Cook's Maps.
      Cook made 3 Circumnavigations and The Endeavour was a converted Coal Ship.
      He was killed trying to recover his nautical equipment.

      Yes, maps were the currency of the day. Countries jealously protected their maps so as to be able to retain exclusivity with new found trading markets.
