yes, if you wrap them in saran wrap/cling film/parchment paper (=sth. non-sticky) first, because only then will you be able to remove the papermaché bowl from it
Great question, you can waterproof paper mache with polyurethanes, nail varnish, melted wax and Mod Podge. The melted wax would not be great if the temperatures are high where you live, also Im not sure if the other things would affect the plant. I would paint it with some acrylic paint and make sure it is completely covered and that might be enough to make it waterproof. there is also a ceramic powder mixture you can cover it with, however, I have never used that.
Hi, thanks for being so clear! I also watched the video on how you make the paste, and I realised you do it the traditional way with flour, which is awesome, I tried with white glue but I'd like to give flour paste a go, I just had one doubt and hope you can help me with that: doesn't it get moldy over time when using flour? Thx!
For some reason I've never had any luck with flour and water paste, so I always opt for Elmer's White glue. The end result is very durable, and you could swear it was made of wood.
Plus, on top of that, you could put newspaper and water into a blender to shred the newspaper, ring out the water, mix some glue in it, and you'll have an EXTREMELY hard clay that you can sculpt over your strip base. I wouldn't recommend trying to sculpt directly onto the balloon, though. I've tried it once, but when it dries it becomes very rough and pops the balloon. Plus with a traditional-mache base, it'll keep its form.
@@RobertChambers1522 It's ideal for that sort of thing... I like to make whimsical fairy lamps & dolls houses using the same method 😊👌🏼 Just wondered if there was another way other than ceramic...
Wonderful tutorial! But I would mention that acrylic paint, wet _or_ dry, is toxic so I wouldn't recommend putting food of any kind in it unless the food is wrapped. Wrapped candies or treats of any kind would be fine, but unwrapped chips, etc., is _not_ recommended.
THANK YOU AND IT WORKS REALLY WELL BUT INSTEAD OF PAPER BAGS, I USE PLASTIC WRAPS.... KEEP UP WITH YOUR WORK N SO FAR I'VE MADE 4 PAPER MACHE BOWLS ALREADY!!!!
She said she was only going to do two layers of newspaper strips.... but she criss-crossed the strips at the bottom many times, so that was MUCH more than two layers. I don't quite understand where the "two layers" were.
I noticed on the backside, there was a gap where a strip of paper did not bond with the lower level. That happens to me too. How does one deal with that?
Mr. Otter Art Studio What about when you catch the problem after the fact, that is when the space with the gap has already dried. What do you do? Should I try to sand or cut it away somehow? Should I try to fill it with some more paste and allow it to become wet again for that extra work? Thanks!
Umm quick question.. can you put varnish after painting it or you don't need it because my teacher made us buy varnish and I still don't know what to do with it.
I really should have watched your video (or any video for that matter) before my son did his project. All we have now is a bowl with glued newspaper strips stuck to it. 🤦♀️ Take 2! 😂
I'd use probably a couple layers, then mix some newspaper and water in a blender to make a paste. Ring out as much water as you can and add PVA/Elmer's glue until it becomes like clay. You can sculpt this over your base layers, and the end result is something that might as well be made of wood.
I wouldn't eat food out of anything that has paint on it--even after paint dries it can be toxic. If it's not food coloring, it probably wasn't meant to be ingested.
I would recommend using a balloon, but there are other forms you can use under it, just make sure the paper mache won't stick to whatever you are using
+Mr. Otter Art Studio what do u mean by that...I'm doing a bird head to cover my whole head? u know how birds heads curve how do I curve it with a balloon
Balloons curve that is why they work for masks that cover your whole head, you can use tape to alter the shape of the balloon if you don't want it to be so round, you can also use cardboard taped to it to alter the shape
+Mr. Otter Art Studio oh okay thanx and can u do a video on it ....u don't have to if u don't want to its just that I'm really new to this and I'm doing a project for school about it..but thank you so much..
Hoang Doan, I am sorry to hear that. People Bully others because they feel bad about themselves. You need to let someone know that you are being bullied that you trust, no one should be treated like that. You deserve to be treated with respect.
+Hoang Doan keep your head up and let your parents know. Also people that bully others have mental problems themselves so dont take anything personal. Take care of yourself and let people know about it. You deserve respect xxxx

Query..what varnish etc can be used so one can use the pot as a flower pot?
Try Mod Podge to seal it!

Me too
For some reason I've never had any luck with flour and water paste, so I always opt for Elmer's White glue. The end result is very durable, and you could swear it was made of wood.
Great tip! I like working with the elders glue paste because it isn't as messy and you can see color and text on the paper you use.
Plus, on top of that, you could put newspaper and water into a blender to shred the newspaper, ring out the water, mix some glue in it, and you'll have an EXTREMELY hard clay that you can sculpt over your strip base. What's this in which you dip the paper
flour and water
Back in school we used petroleum jelly to line the inside of the bow then paper mached over it. It came of very easily after drying up
great tip!
I have a question. Can you use gum instead of paste?
just tried this out for a project hope it works
It's for my assignment so THANK YOU!!!!!

Does magazines work?
Yes
I noticed on the backside, there was a gap where a strip of paper did not bond with the lower level. That happens to me too. How does one deal with that?
S Simone Good observation. Use plenty of the paste, if your strips of paper are not wet enough they won't stick to the previous ones.
Mr. Otter Art Studio What about when you catch the problem after the fact, that is when the space with the gap has already dried. What do you do? Should I try to sand or cut it away somehow? Should I try to fill it with some more paste and allow it to become wet again for that extra work? Thanks!
Glue and clothespin
Can I dry it by sunlight?
yes
can you use any type of paper or only news paper
I have used newspaper, colored paper, printer paper, I haven't found any that didn't work
can i use brown bags? thank you
Yes good luck!
Umm quick question.. can you put varnish after painting it or you don't need it because my teacher made us buy varnish and I still don't know what to do with it.
Did you use magazine paper?
wow
its amazing
Can i just use normal glue
Jinn Loilo pva glue wood glue
seems very easy!!
how can you give a shorter time to dry?
Use a blow dryer, or put it out in the sun, those are two ways I have tried to dry it faster
Is it a glue?

How to make paste?
