I need to watch other tutorials because I need to learn how to paper mache a face, and I do not have an existing plaster face from which to work. I read somewhere a long time ago that you can blow up a baloon, do a layer of paper mache over it and let it dry - wait the requisite 24 hours, do another layer, wait another 24 hours, and then pop the balloon - although in retrospect I'm not 1005 sure why you would need to pop the balloon; if it's not helium, wouldn't it just slowly erode? Thinking on that for a moment, perhaps that might affect the shape/strength of the outer layers...so we're back to popping the balloon. Have you ever heard of this method and does it work? If you have a second to answer this question I would be so appreciative. I will also continue to watch your tutorials. Thank you!

I've done it both ways, and you're right, there's a better blend when you tear them. For anything that's going to be viewed close up then definitely tear. But most of my stuff is for the theater and anything that's on stage and viewed from at least 15 to 20 feet away, there's no problem. It's just faster to cut the strips, especially if you're reproducing multiple pieces for a show and need to churn them out! Thanks for your comment Joy!
Stupid question but will this stick to a beach ball? I'm making an Andy's the apple mask and to make it I'm gonna have to use a beach ball to make it big enough to fit on my head so I just wanna make sure I'm not gonna look stupid
Not a stupid question at all. My answer is, I'm not sure, buy why not try! I bet it will. It will stick to a balloon. You don't have anything to lose so give it a shot!! Try it and see, and if it doesn't stick, then cover the balloon with masking tape. It will for sure stick to the masking tape.
from a chef's perspective you mix yer flour with cold water because warm water causes lumpy gravy so to speak. and a fork is a much better wisker than a wisk...

Depends on what kind of tape it is. If you used masking tape or duct tape, then no problem at all. Many of the masks I've made had masking tape on them and the paper mache goes right over it and sticks no problem. But if it's like scotch tape, it might not stick as well.
I've been toying with the idea of doing a paper mache project for some time now. But didn't know what to do. I'm currently buying Harley Davidson Christmas ornaments. To do a Harley Davidson themed Christmas tree. In the colors of my all Custom Harley Davidson Road King big wheel bagger. Finding a Harley Davidson Christmas tree topper that I like or finding one at all is very difficult. So I'm considering making one out of paper mache. If I do this I will be buying stickers to put on the front and back of the paper mache. If I do it I will be doing a Harley Davidson bar and shield.
Hi, i don't have a base, i am trying to make horns ( they kinda look like ears as they are curved) but i don't know what to use to put the paper mache on top of, any ideas? Can i use simple news paper to get the shape then put the layers of this on?
Yes, newspaper would be great. Roll and twist it up and wrap masking tape around it to retain the shape of the horn. You can build up layers of newspaper if needed and just keep taping the layers. Don't use scotch tape....masking tape is the best. Depending on how large the horns are and if you need even more stability, you could use some thin cardboard twisted up as a base (like a paper towel roll, or empty cereal box...that type of thin cardboard (and could use combined with the newspaper). Hope that helps!
Quick question Is it washable? Like since you’re using you hands and stuff to smooth the paper down and fix any edges that are standing up could you wash off the paste from your hands
I would use something like toilet paper or paper towels, torn up into small pieces. You can dip them into the paper mache paste and smoosh them up and then apply them to your mountains. You could also lay them "flat" on the mountains when they have paste on them and shape them to have as much texture as you want.
the paste soaks through and gives it a 'wet' look, when it dries, will it go back to its original colour? i need to know soon because im working on a last minute halloween costume 🗿 (im using regular white paper btw)
I've never tried it, but I don't think it would be a good substitute. Toilet paper is designed to start disintegrating as soon as it gets wet. That wouldn't work for paper mache.
My plaster base is just one way. You can create your base out of things like cardboard and masking tape. You could probably make a base out of clay and as long as you use some kind of release agent (like spraying the clay with PAM or another non-stick spray), you should be able to paper mache right over the clay.
Can you please explain to me the purpose of putting the paper on the mask, I thought the purpose of paper mache was ,when it dried you could take it off the original mould.so you have a new mask. This was staying on the mold I take it. I'm missing something here,
That's not a mold in my demonstration. That is a mask that I'm creating. The first couple layers of the mask are plaster wrap (AKA plaster bandages). Then I add a couple of layers of paper mache on top of the plaster wrap. The reason I used plaster wrap as the base is because I needed this mask to be very strong. The reason I switched over to paper mache for the final layers is because I wanted the mask to be as light as possible. Had I used only layers of plaster wrap the mask would have been very heavy. So two layers of plaster wrap and two layers of paper mache make it strong but light.
You would not be removing the paper mache from the "base". In this video, I am permanently sticking the paper mache to the lion's head, as an outer layer. Once the paper mache dries it will be like glued on to the head.

You mean using masking tape? I use masking tape a LOT, especially if you're building up some kind of armature or sculpture that you're going to paper mache over the top of.

LOL, you are hilarious. I hope you're not actually using toilet paper to do paper mache? It's too flimsy and will deteriorate in the paste before you can apply it. Use paper towel or newspaper. :-D

Thanks for responding. Poor audio is an all-too common problem on TH-cam and the Internet. Most people don't realize that the cheap mics in their (usually cheap) cameras are made to pick up audio at a close and fairly direct range, with camera pointing directly at the subject. If you really want to produce a good-audio quality video, you need an experienced audio man and the right mics or a clip-on "Lav." Best to you

I have always torn my towels so that they blend together. Do you not have a problem with the hard cut straight edge?

If you put it into the refrigerator, I've saved big batches for a day or two at most, no problem. Just bring it to room temp before using it again.

Yes, it's just flour and water so it's totally washable from your hands, utensils, the bowl, etc. (no different than if you were making pancakes!).

I don't want to buy a big bag of flour. And I already have cornstarch. Cornstarch is actually flour, right? So will it work?
I've never used cornstarch before, and if you do, I think you have to add some other ingredients like sugar and vinegar. Experiment!

The paste is only flour, water and salt, the same ingredients in breads, cakes, etc, so yes, it's totally safe and washable.

the salt was in the water?
I add the salt to the flour first, and then add the water and mix it all together. The salt acts as a kind of preservative to help prevent mold.

Sorry I don't understand the question. Do you want to paper mache on top of tin foil? I don't think it would stick to the foil.
I tried it and it works. It doesn't stick as well but I wrapped it right around the foil so it held perfectly
