NGL. First experience with Gundam was 1995 from a bad chinese dubbed VHS tape of 0079
Thought it was an USA made cartoon due to RX-78-2 colouring.
Fell in love with Zaku 2 more than the project V suits from the start of ep.1, due to the monoeye and the "Juoong" activation sound. 2nd fav was the Guntank (because of DOOM chaingun)

I honestly think Entry Grades are underrated in the community. They are cheap, require no tools, and still give you the experience of putting a lot together, albeit with much better runner organization. I love them for practicing new techniques for customization, whether it be painting or scribing. I would whole heartedly recommend them to anyone new or intermediate (for cheap kits to practice on). Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

I actually would recommend SD kits to beginners due to the simplicity. It's a good way to learn about the basics of gundam. They also are great for experimental customizing. Yes, they aren't great as model kits, but they are good kits to show builders what to do and not feel too upset if they mess up. The first build will definitely not be perfection!

Been building gunplas for 26 years. Hearing old and new builders stories on their first kit or experience in gunpla always makes me smile and feeling warm inside.
Worrying trend in gunpla building community are the increase of toxicity and elitism from both old and new builders.

I had that whole series of kits, even as poor quality as they are. @@onionring1531 but I think the Unicorn is the earliest progenitor of fully assembled inner frame. I've built both kits. And both actually still uses the advance ms joints albeit very simple renditions like the Unicorn Knee Joints and for the Tallgeese its the backpact thrusters. You could also counts The 00 QANT as the true earliest progenitor of fully assembled inner frames because the arm parts are built from scratch. And for the right reasons, its fairly solid and strong enough to hold the massive GN Buster sword to a certain degree(emphasis on CERTAIN DEGREE). I've built it and was absolutely blown away.

@@basshibiki To my knowledge all current RGs still use the advance ms joints in some form, just usually not for anything substantial like the head, shoulders, arms, torso, waist, knees, and feet of the Unicorn that were required due to the transformation.
You are correct though that the Unicorn was definitely one of the first RGs to incorporate significant amounts of buildable inner frame to connect the prebuilt parts in order to complete the inner frame, as many of the earlier RGs including the 00 QANT did still have non MS joint parts needed to finish the frame they just didn't usually make up any of the joints.

      @PlamoTherapy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@basshibiki All RG's before it had a "Preassembled Frame". For example, the leg is a single piece on the runner, and you build the whole arm assembly by laying parts on top of it. An MG-style frame is one where you build each part of the leg individually. This means the leg will have at least two major subassemblies: above and below the knee are built separately then joined together later.

On top of that, it only really comes if you put stress on the joints, ie holding a weapon or in a stressful pose, or if you move the joints often. So if your going to simply build a rg put it in a standing or other basic pose and throw it on the shelf your golden.

I remember when I first started my Gunpla journey, I was absolutely convinced that I wanted the biggest kits I could reasonably afford. I ended up recording the No Grade 1/100 Gundam Astray Green Frame. A fine kit, though I've had to re-glue the arm pegs so many times I've just elected not to pose it anymore.
Nowadays I think I'm more of an HG guy. I know there's some amazing Master grades out there, but if you need something to scratch that Gunpla itch on a budget, you really can't go wrong with an HG. My first HG was the RX-78-2 Revive and I fell in love, it did a great job of selling me on everything the line has to offer. Can't wait to build another!

I recall my first gunpla was easily 30 years ago and was a Ganso SD NT1 Alex (#33). First non-SD I got was no-grade 1/144 Zeta, didn't transform and required a whole lot of painting. Was able to move up to a few HG kits from Wing and X and then to no-grade 1/100 and finally a MG Zeta. I had pretty much stopped when I migrated 15 years ago, and basically entrusted the built ones to a friend. Just brought with me an unbuilt MG F91 v1 that was gifted to me by a friend at work while I was in Japan. Lost contact with that friend and have been trying to find them since, and I still have the kit unbuilt in its box, and I decided to only build it once I've finally reconnected with them.

About 1-2 hours build time, great fun for posing and a little cheaper than High grade plus on Amazon prime. So it felt worth the risk of literally £11 to see how I felt about the hobby and then I instantly was satisfied with the build albeit simple styling and bought one more entry grade and a few high grade to enjoy

If you're coming over or back from warhammer, don't be intimidated by old kits, even 90's high grades are going to be a joy for you. They're a joy to paint because you probably have all the necessary paints for detail work, and you don't even need to paint most of it. Mini painting has been a great help in overcoming the hurdle of old model kits or badly stickered kits.

I find myself finding myself in love with High Grade kids, specifically from The Witch from Mercury.
Straight forward, simple, elegant, sleek. No assortment of crazy whacky stickers (the anime doesn't have any decals on the gundams or mobile suits). They do have a lack of color differentiation in certain parts because of size and variety of being molded on mostly 4 individual colors, plus 1 or 2 specialty pre-printed detailed parts. But they are the most affordable, easiest to put together, and I don't feel guilty customizing them.

I would like to add that your initial model will also be probably be decided by your tolerance for part count and part sizes.
If a high part count might seem to much for you but part size is not, then you go for HG instead of RG to test the waters. MG's offer a good balance of part count and size. My friend lets his kid daughter build MG's specifically for this reason (bigger parts are easier to handle for tiny hands). I probably won't recommend the PG for a first build simply because the kit itself would be a little prohibitively expensive and if you didn't like the experience, it might sour the whole hobby for you.

I got into Gunpla two years ago. I remember my first kit was the RG Freedom Gundam and that was pretty fun to build despite being an amateur. I got the HG RGZ-95C ReZEL Type C [Defenser b-Unit] [GR] and HG Unicorn Banshee Destroy Mode, but they just weren't as fun. But then I got the RG Wing Gundam EW and after putting it together, I decided that RG was my speciality grade. I've gotten better by filing off nubs, adding panel lining and cutting off excess decals. My latest is the RG Sword Impulse Gundam and it looks phenomenal. So far, none of my RGs have Early Real Grade Syndrome since I keep them in their boxes.
I've watched Mecha Gaikotsu's reviews on RGs and agree for the most part on his opinions. In my opinion, the Strike Freedom and Justice Gundams are awesome for their time since the former has an incredible look and the latter is the first one where you can stick him on a giant winged pack.
I also have the MG Barbatos, MG Ver Ka Wing ZERO GOTL and MG Blue Seven Sword Gundam/G since they have no exact RG versions. Both are epic. Looking forward to the RG Hi Nu Gundam, plus the Hyper Mega Bazooka Launcher, MG Tallgesse Flugel.

The latter two because Deathscythe is my favorite, and the first because that's what my mom decided to get me as a random gift. I'll probably get an GH or MG of the RX-78-02 once I've built the first three, but I'll also have to get some Zaku Gunpla (at least one red and one green) for the sake of posting "pre-battle pose" pics once I've finished with those builds and any gunpla I get after that.
