Years ago I lived in a village near Chepstow in Gwent and a friend of mine told me a very similar story about his small brother. When the little guy was about 3, he went through a period of waking up crying that some men were walking through his bedroom, which was on the ground floor. The men, so he said, had no legs. One evening he was with my friend looking through a book of soldiers throughout history and pointed to picture of Roman soldiers and began to cry saying they were the men who walked through his room. It turned out that the main road on which the house was built was an old Roman road and, so we believe, the ghostly soldiers were walking along the original road now below street level....hence no legs.

When my mum passed, at first she made herself known by flickering lights, especially at times when we as family were sat around together would be laughing ~ as though she were adding in her own laughter... she dearly loved to laugh.
Then one afternooon a few months later after she'd died, I dozed off on the sofa, and had the most vivid dream I'd ever experienced. I was following my mum up an ancient stone stairs, cut into the side of a mountain, and we were surrounded by an ancient, wild forest. Mushrooms grew on the trees and logs, fiddler head ferns poked up between the stones of the staircase. She wore what I might describe as the bright orange robes of a buddhist monk, but I mostly think this is because she loved vibrant colors, as neither of us practiced buddhism; she identified as new age pagan.
The image of her hand came to me then (the way that you know your own mother's hands) tracing the texture of the bark on an old tree ~ it was so _her_ ... she loved textures, loved the smell and sounds and essence of the woods...
Then we were climbing the stairs again, and came to a ledge, overlooking the expanse of valleys and mountains before us. She leaned against an ancient wall there, her head slightly cocked and her eyes glittering in that way she had, especially when she knew a secret. She gestured out over creation, admiring the splendor ~ "Look how beautiful it is" she told me, but when I tried to look, all I could see was clouds, as though whatever she was seeing and admiring was obscured from my sight. As though, I was not meant to see that yet.
And then I woke. I'll never, ever forget that. Her telling me, she is not only okay now, she's doing well. She's in a state of peace.
I've dreamt of her a few more times, but never as vividly. The most recent was when, in the days leading up to Hurricane Milton directly hitting my hometown, I was losing my mind about the house I'd inherited from her being blown away. I could *not* sleep for days. I finally managed to pass out the afternoon beforehand, and she came to me again, this time looking much younger than she had previously, giving me a very kind and loving smile and saying "you're going to be okay." Despite the fact that it was very, very frightening (I've lived in FL 38 years, mind you, I've been thru plenty of hurricanes), my house was, blessedly, alright, with very little damage despite other homes in my area not faring well at all. I feel watched over. She was my best friend in life, and now she looks after me from... wherever and whenever she is. I can't wait to see her again but until then, I am trying to lead my best and most authentic life, in a way that would make her proud.

I've heard it said that there are 3 types of hauntings. Residual, intelligent, and time slip. Residual, this type is mostly from an energy imprint. Things that the inhabitants did often. The sound of doors opening when the door doesn't do so. A ghost that walks up the stairs but pays no mind to the living. Energy that is still there from repetition.
Then there is the intelligent haunting. This kind is some sort of being. We don't have words in English to really explain, but I think this ties into things like barrow wights, beings or others that died but either have unfinished business, or to much trauma of some sort to move on. Whatever "on" means to these others.
Then there is a time slip. A time slip, as I understand it, is like when you hear music from a different era, when people go about there lives but somehow it overlaps with your time. Time is not linear, it's more of a spiral. So when it laps back over itself and touches, sometimes you can see them and sometimes they can see you. You become the ghost to them just as much as they are to you.
What it sounds like is either a time slip on your farm or residual. maybe a mix of both from the trauma. Your location could also be uniquely attached to that time period as well. Like with the archeologists finding the kiln and doing some digging, that sort of thing makes time overlap.
Some people are more sensitive to these things. Women are usually more sensitive to "hauntings", I use this term loosely for lack of a better word.
Ghosts are interesting. This is just my view on things.
Oh, and in case you didn't know, poltergeist activity has been mostly linked to puberty and life changes super charging latent psionic energy. Super interesting.

One time when my son was small and I was putting him to bed, he told me that there was an old lady sitting on top of the wardrobe (I couldn’t see her but I really believe he did) I asked him if he was scared of her or if she wanted anything - but no, she was just quietly sitting there. Later I found out that this old lady had died in our flat a few years before we moved in. Some time later I went to see a shaman - not because of the old lady, but I told this healer about her. She went into trance and travelled into our flat and told me afterwards that the old lady liked being around my son because she mistook him for her own grandson. She led the old lady out of our flat and somehow helped her to continue her journey. Interestingly the healer could describe our flat very acurately without ever having been here. So…without noticing it I have lived in a haunted flat for years 😂…the ghost was too well behaved… Love❤ and thank You

To put it simply, what makes sense to me is, despite the fact that we “normally” experience time as a linear series of events in the physical/material parts of reality, time itself is many-layered, just as our group and individual consciousness is. I think perhaps this is where souls of the dead, if their intent, or any emotionally charged event from the past is strong enough, it can come through those layers and be expressed. Encounters with ghosts are the “tuning in” to another timeline that is occurring in this NOW that we all share. Kind of like seeing part of another timeline. Those bogs are full of supernatural events I believe. I’ve been in some before here in Virginia foraging and such and have came across strange things in the creeks and swamps. The native Americans believed some of these places were where you could come into contact with passed on ancestors and they would build ceremonial sites near these spots. But some places they avoided because the ancient people that occupied the land before them had built sites as well and strange things were said to happen there. I’ve seen things around these places and had crazy dreams after being in them. My home that was built in the late 1800s is near one of these sites and stones from the bogs were used to build the chimney. So it’s safe to say we have supernatural occurrences pretty often. People don’t like to talk about it a lot. There’s definitely things they don’t like people doing.

I've done some research in regards to Celtic passings and ghosts could either be a traumatic event that a psychic person (mostly female adolescent) lived that echos thru time which covers poltergeist, then there are certain Celtic cyrmu tribes that don't get to rest until judgment. We are destined to become a sort of banshee or ghost till the end times

Oh man, I think there's so many different reasons for ghosties. The replayed experience, like a projector of the past makes sense in some circumstances I wonder if there's a lot of quartz in the area. Sometimes I think if time isn't linear our feelings are so strong part of ourselves gets a bit stuck in an area too. If there's multiple dimensions there's probably multiple reasons for sightings and feelings. My birth mom was in my dreams for about a month after her passing. It was comforting for that period after to have a bit more time with her. It's a nice way to say good bye a bit longer I think. I wonder if time works the same on the other side though... loved the personal fireplace dream/roman soldier replay , what an cool experience! It's like she got to time travel.

Hello Story Crow. I do love your story telling. On the subject of ghosts. Is it a compartmentalisation to lump, what we assume, as the spirits, or energy imprint of what we perceive, from our western linear viewpoint as the ‘dead’, as all being of the same origin and meaning? My own personal experience of the dead and dying, has been more varied than yours. Although I have studied Jungian psychology for years and clinical psychology more recently, and so give credence to the traumatic mental and emotional state created when a loved one dies, especially suddenly. But, clinical psychology focuses on explaining the known reality, whereas Jung was brave enough to delve into the unconscious and subconscious realms. I personally believe in animism and multi-dimensionalism. I am also very open to the Wiccan/ shamanic view that all time is now, which accepts that our souls being trapped in a physical body creates a dense matter that in every day life disables us from seeing the ‘all’ of our true reality. I am currently working my way through Madam Blavasky’s work Isis Unveiled vol 1 and 2, which she wrote in 1876. Her research into this subject is fascinating and multi-faceted and well worth a delve. ❤

Energy can't be destroyed. It only changes form. We are consciousness focused into physical form. The Roman soldiers will be residual energy. A playback/imprint. There is no interaction with that as it is not conscious. The energy of those who've left their body is consciousness and can therefore interact. Like radio waves, there are many different frequencies. We all share the same space but are vibrationally at different frequencies. Those that have newly transitioned will often come to us in 'dreams' or even show themselves (hard to do initially and out of great love will try) None of us like to see our loved ones suffer. They will try to bring comfort and relief. The other way they communicate is with signs. Great game to play with them. I've had stuff move about in front of me many times. So cool! Although I live in Cumbria, I'm born and bred in Colchester, Essex, Britain's oldest recorded town....I believe Camulodunum is older than Londinium, and was also subject to a very angry Boudicca (also known as Boadicea) who, with her tribe, the Iceni, burned Colchester to the ground including the temple of Claudius, where the Norman castle now stands. I believe that the Iceni attacked Colchester before heading west to London, where I think their revolt met a sticky end. When you lose someone who was close to you it seems to me that the veil tears a bit between worlds and you are walking with them a bit and a bit in this world. Their presence feels strong at first and then they do seem to move on.
Imprint of trauma on the energy fields is viable idea. Another is that the land has some kind of consciousness and holds the memory and sometimes we see it/feel it /hear it. Not too far from the energy field idea. Another is that everything is happening all at once and we slip into a different experience and access something. I think all of this is similar to what others have written in the comments.
Somewhat like the Roman soldiers, but it didn't come in a dream but as a strong feeling and expectation -when looking out over a rolling snowy field in Wisconsin and feeling a thundering herd of buffalo ready to come up over the hill. Overactive imagination? Perhaps. This community is one of the view places where there is acceptance of this kind of experience but also examining it with a rational brain. Bonus

As for forklore tales I belive there is a root of truth in them. But stories told over and over agein over a long periode of time change. Every person telling the story remeber it a bit different, adding new things for those the storyteller forgot. The story also changes to fit into the era it's told.
Ghosts I belive are some kind of memories or ecchoes of people lived and things that happened in the past. And then something trigger those memories, like the excavating of the old village at your dads house. Sometime when people make changes on old houses things happens, the memory of those whom used to live there comes back. Just like our memories, we don't, at all time remember everything from our life. Our memories are triggered by a smell, a taste, a word, a sound or meeting an old friend. And suddenly we have a clear memory of sitting at our grandmas table eating some favorite dish she made. So Tamsin's dream could have been a memory ligering from a march the solidiers made all those years ago. Some people are more sensitive and able to hear and see those momories, my grandson is way more sensitive to this than I am.

I’m just an old fire rescue emergency medic type nurse who loves looking at the scene and getting the history.
Everything behind the storyteller tells a story.
The magic of an in-the-person storyteller is blinding.
It is so much fun to follow your story line Mr Crow. 🐦‍⬛

I’m in America. Why is it a dark day? What did I miss?

I believe there are multiple explanations including a theory I had from my teenage years, in the spirit of being a fan of Quantum Leap 😂 at the time and a playschool level understanding of string theory as in time travels forwards and perhaps backwards simultaneously in the pattern of a twisting turning piece of string- it seemed to me that sometimes the pieces of string as it were should touch resulting in an ethereal effigy or perhaps even a physical transportation of biological entities backwards and forwards in time and space explaining sightings of things like marching Legionaries, UFO’s and perhaps even the Loch Ness Monster/ Big Foot ( remember I was quite young) That’s the type of theory spawn of a fatty-bum-batty and a couple of buckets but perhaps some truth behind it… out of the mouths of babes

Ghosts are the metaphysical echoes of intelligences, affirmations, energies, forces, entities or astral projections. Yes they’re also a lot of other things nameless or otherwise, this is just an occult take. ♥️

@@TheStoryCrowAlternatively they could be memories experienced through people, with living people experiencing them becoming the medium through which they manifest, which the collective unconscious allows to happen. Very interesting stuff
